After this latest upgrade 7hrs of it... I still cannot log on to Star Trek except in Safe mode. May leave this game completely if this does not improve.
With every update the drivers for video cards needs to be potentially updated, too. Make sure you double-check that; I had that issue when I first started playing this game and noticed it wouldn't load after a few patches.
First thing I'd check is firewall and security software blocking the connection or ports, sorry if you've checked these things also make sure Internet Explorer is able to connect to the internet as I think it uses parts of that to connect.
Also since it works in safe mode there could be a program preventing the connection if you have ccleaner installed you can prevent the autorun programs from starting one at a time and see if you can find the culprit if your security software has a pause try to connect with it paused (only temporarily).
There's been a fix for similar problems for a while now. It's not 100%, but try it.
1. Enter the game in safe mode.
2. At the character select screen, open the options.
3. Click the display tab and change the Direct 3D setting to Direct 3D 9.
4. Close and restart the game normally and it should be able to load and you'll be able to reset your graphic settings back to normal.

Considering STO's game engine is about a decade old, I don't think so.
Have you tried deleting the gameprefs file? Back it up before you do, just in case.
Bobb, no offense intended here, but it's not the game as to where your problems seem to lay. The things that they did in that fix was strictly for connecting to the game, not what you need to do to connect to the game. That sounds like a hardware issue. You either have an out-of-date driver or your machine might also be slowly dying. It also might be that you have a virus or some other form of malware on your rig. I would recommend downloading Malwarebytes Free and running a scan with that to see if you find any malware.
On a side note for me...I'm still being kicked from the game. Thought this maintenence was supposed to fix that. And before you tell me it's my computer, I've checked everything. I run TeamSpeak to communicate with my fleet, and sometimes open up Chrome while ingame. Both TS and Chrome are unaffected, but I have this wierd thing where the server doesn't respond yet my instance I'm going to still loads, gets to 45% then kicks me. 99.9% sure that's server-based, and while it's not as often after the network maintenance, it still happens. I'm beginning to think that the servers might be slowly dying. Not like they've been running for a better part of 5 years though, so if that is the case, can't say I'm too surprised.
or your connection may look like mine does currently

hmm. wonder why I have lag and connection problems currently.(and its saturday)
here's it is July8 & 9 {after shard maintenance} and it has already crashed 3 times w/ 2 characters before shard maintenance there was no problem with 1 character = 3 characters.

The connection issues seem to be wide spread enough to safely say that this is not a local machine problem but a server end problem. I am trying my best to hang in there until they work out the server end issues as I am certain they're aware.
With season 10.5 on the horizon, the increased traffic is just going to keep crashing and breaking the server until they have no choice to fix the actual problem. The down side to that is, season 10.5 will take a lot of negative feedback as a result.
