I don't think another way to show off one's epeen is a good thing....

As I have no clue on what my DPS is, I think my title would be "DPS has not dropped"

How about this for an idea?

Cap the amount of DPS that can be done.
    Make tanks/healers/crowd control necessary.
    Promote team work over DPS.

A significant problem with capping DPS is that it removes the incentive to continually improve to the best equipment, buy the best lockbox items, and buy the new starship traits, which in turn decreases revenue from people who would spend on this. Having said that, the cost to build an ultra-high DPS ship is very, very, very expensive, and this is probably discouraging to many people.

If you want Cryptic to put artificial DPS controls in place, it almost makes more sense to me to give scaling handicap boosts to bonus damage, critical chance, and critical severity that scale with your equipment/skill point stats so that everyone starts fairly competitive and those that want to go higher can if they put enough time and resources into overcoming the scaling handicap. I think Cryptic tried to partly do this when they rescaled the Mk XIII and Mk XIV weapons to give a greater damage bonus if you did not have many tactical consoles. I feel that was a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done here. If this is implemented properly, I can see a shoring-up of the extreme low end, while the high end can still continue to grow.

As for making tanks/healers/CC more necessary, the timers in the various elite (and some advanced) queues basically mean that: "You need to do X amount of damage in Y amount of seconds if you want to succeed." They set minimum team (and individual, in the case of queues like Herald Sphere where teams need to split up) DPS demands, and they punish those that cannot meet those demands. The queues would have to be completely re-designed in order to accommodate those other roles. Would that be nice? Sure. It would be great to see more uses for the many bridge officer and Epic Console abilities that are essentially shunned, sometimes even mocked, by the community because of their ineffectiveness and because there are better options. In fact, Viscous Cycle Elite is probably a good current example of where varied roles are necessary - you need some people to hold aggro and create distractions so that others can use the interacts without coming under attack, and some of the Undine ships have attacks that are strong enough to one-shot just about anyone they target who isn't stacking resists. VCE also does not have exorbitant DPS requirements, it's more about teamwork and accomplishing the interact objectives. However, that queue is more an exception than the rule. For most other content, with the levels of potential DPS currently in the game, it has gotten to the point where any combat challenge can be solved by simply increasing DPS, and increasing the health of enemies and shortening the timers just makes it harder on those who don't push for high DPS. It is not uncommon to find a standard, non-specialized team where one person could have more than 12 times the DPS of one of their teammates. Think about that: it would take 12 copies of the low DPS player, who really doesn't have to be that low, maybe 8k, to match the higher DPS player. How can you expect to have combat-based team content that fits for all when there is such a huge disparity between the low end and the high end, and allow both types of players to join in? Curiously enough, ground combat doesn't seem to suffer from this problem. Sure, you can find high DPS ground builds, but unless they are highly specialized for specific missions, they're usually not outrageously stronger than the rest of the team.

As for the topic of this poll, I don't really agree with a flashy title system that says basically "This is how much time and/or money I've spent on starship damage performance in this game".

Great, lets reward pretentious DPS elitism.

A good build, ship, and set up are their own reward.

Now let me be clear I like to refine, improve, and tweak my own builds, and am pretty close to breaking 20k in a T5U Nebula with a Sci Captain & Phasers, so I don't know where that puts me on everyone's relate spectrum.

If anything I could see something like this in PvP scenarios, to identify the more threatening target, any maybe when you highlight a player's info, but not broadcasting out in social zones or PVE settings.

I voted no but I don't really care.

However, having them would cause no more judgement or elitism than any other accolade, like the NWS one's or whatever.

But I still don't care either way.

They could connect it to a system like the one that added the purple delta after the names of deltalts during the delta event.

As u got higher DPS it would show the number, like 5k, 10k, 20k etc after ur name and also when ur k got higher it would change colors like a brown color for 10k and then a metal silver color for higher and a gold and then if u got it really high like make it animated flashing colors and maybe the top person gets every color in the rainbow pulsing and if u got more k then not just have the flashing colors but also make the font much bigger though and give special titles to go along with the colors and numbers like DPS master or samurai or or wizard and if u got high enough k for it to make you have the flashing numbers and the huge numbers font and the title of wizard then u could get some special clothing like a master chain for master and a samurai armor for samurai and a wizards robes for the top title which could be wizard!

you come up with some of the most brilliant ideas ever.

Id love the ability to quickly survey the pub team and formulate a tactic before even leaving the spawn. why anyone would be against this is beyond me.

Uhh... ingame titles for something completely inconsistent and depending on a thousand factors as DPS? Terrible idea.

No, I think the dps titles wouldn't help.
Instead, just add a scoreboard at the end of the PvE queue so you have official proof that some players suck and they would be able to see it for themselves. Right now there is no official way to prove "Kirk" player his phaser pew-pew or photon micro-torpedoes do little-to-no damage to NPCs on higher difficulties.

I gave this a lot of though, and I voted yes, for the simple fact the titles would just be the beginning. I sau this as Cryptic can than use the titles to help group players with same level DPS when fighting in a STFs. No more rage quits, no more DPS channels, no more "DPSers vs everyone else."

    Win win.

First, what exactly would the point of grouping like DPS together be? Second, how do you imagine that can even work with the queues as slow as they are?

I think this would be a good first step to fixing queues. If they could gate access to the advanced and elite queues behind the accolade it would be even better.

Keeping the sub 10k parasites from trying to leach a victory from a queue they can't handle would be a huge improvement to the game.

Yeah, the game DOES have the ability to track that, it just doesn't show the players the data.

This game's design is very flawed.

Healing? Doesn't matter! In fact a good dps build can have more self hps than a dedicated Recluse healer. (epic fail cryptic)
    Tanking? Doesn't matter!
    Crowd Control? Doesn't matter!

PvE content in STO is designed by casual n00bs for casual n00bs. Dps >>> all, that's all it comes down to. No strategies required, no teamwork required, no team required, no skill required.

I simply don't like anything that might even promote this design flaw. I'd be fine with anything that get's us away from the dps focus.

Cryptic should have created NPCs that are alot more like Player Ships. Same HP, but also the same skills. I'd love to see a bunch of cross-healing, TT using NPCs that are able to nuke off your silly alpha strikes.

    Certainly not.

This game is too DPS-focused as it is, we don't need MORE incentive to be high dpsers. And I have to agree that adding dps titles would just add more of a reason for crazy dpsers to insta-quit from PUGs if other players don't have a uber-dps title.

Admittedly it would be rather funny if upon obtaining such a title, you were then forbidden from pugging and could only queue through premades. After all, the quest for such a title shows an attitude that one is above the unwashed masses, so why not be treated like it by the game itself? Not to mention, it also protects new and leveling players from getting slapped with an AFK penalty just for trying to level and getting teamed with the wrong person. Play the DPS game, be prepared for the tradeoffs. >:);)

But seriously--no...bad idea. I definitely don't recommend DPS titles.

So can't cap DPS because of time limits? Remove time limits BOOM solved.
  • sheldonlcoopersheldonlcooper Member Posts: 4,042 Arc User

They can't cap it because the game survives now based on selling power to a relatively small number of customers. At this point it would kill the game. They could, however, limit and diminish the stacking of several key items and it would have the same effect (and would produce many many tears).

Had to say no on this first draft idea, but you could always re-poll. Might think about adding required player ethnicity and bank account balances show too?

I mean if you really want to be elitist, you might as well go all the way. Profiling other players would be so much easier with a couple extra data-points. I mean if you're poor and a minority that ALSO has low DPS? No PUGS for you!

I think you got this figured backwards. It's sad that some people in this game are so insecure about themselves that they need a little thing like an 'always-visible' title to keep their epeen up.

Here's the thing: those who are truly awesome have the reputation already, and don't need a title; and those who do are, well, not as awesome as they think the title will make them look.

Those DPS numbers you all see are only relevant in ISA. Go into any other queue and parse and see your DPS drop like a rock, also see it fluctuating heavily even when playing with same teammates.

    No support.
The DPS race has honestly brought nothing good to the game.
While DPS parsing was fun for a while to get a general(VERY general) idea of the combat effectiveness of ones build, the community thats sprung up around it is just way to toxic.
Some people seem more concerned about measuring their e-peens these days rather than completing the mission as a team.
