I got curious last night and decided to test out two different playing style with my Phanton ship.
I'm a tac cap and have been building up my Fleet Avenger and my Phantom for the last few month. All this time, I had been solely concentrating on playing with max weapon power to maximise the damage. Up until recently, I never really dabbed in any embassy plasma consoles, but last couple of weeks, I've playing a lot of that and decided to swap up my game play to see the difference between DPS done.
So I bumped up my Aux power level to max, which of courses lowered my weapon power. I was expecting low numbers but the numbers that came back was a bit of a surprise.
Normally, my beam attack would be averaging about 20k dps, I slapped on the plasma consoles and jumped up to about 22k, highest I ever managed was 25k.
I tried the new style of play, expecting to see my weapon energy level really low but it was surprising to see the borg set seems to be doing REALLY well resisting energy drain. Between the borg set, OSS and all the rest of the power up, the weapon power managed to stay pretty much pass 100 all the time with the Aux power on full as well. The result was 26-27k dps. A much higher damage from the plasma explosion but lower damage from beams, but overall, got a better result. This is with 0 skills in exotic damage. *Sigh*, I'm going to have to spend another 500zen on a respect token to see what it's really capable of.
This is just an fyi for all those interested - try out different things

However, Aux power is directly proportional to the damage buff you'll get from the Nukara: Offense trait. I'm betting that's where your damage boost came from.
But yeah, Aux did change the plasma explosion. First 30 runs I did, I had the Aux to the lowest I could set it at, and that got me about 8k consistently. When I did the next 10 runs with Max Aux and min Weap, I got about 18-25k damage everytime it proc. I was constantly told it didn't affect it but I just wanted to try it out anyway...
Of cause there is also a limit and usefull weapon power. Above that you wont see much effect which I assume took the biggest part of your loss in beam damage away.
