Protonic Polaron or Bio-Molecular Disruptors?

madviolamadviola Member Posts: 110 Arc User
So I'm in a quandary. I've got a photon heavy build where most of them are Bio photons. I initially added some bio energy weapons to receive the buffs from the four piece Counter-Command Ordinance set, but now I'm beginning to realize that I might be better suited to use the three piece Protonic Arsenal set to add the last 10% Crit Chance and 10% Crit Severity to photons instead. The energy weapons are more there as additional support against shields. The torps are the primary damage dealer.

I think that the builds have the trait and skill tree info in them. I can't remember. I'll take a look.

What do you think? Protonic Polaron or Bio-Molecular Disruptors?

Setting any other commentary aside, I think I'd go with the bio disruptors. The slow effect and radiation are nice, the 3-piece with the turret is at-least-somewhat decent as a PBAOE special, and the Protonic proc is of questionable usefulness.

I like the bio proc, and I'm not totally sure what the protonic proc actually is (haven't played it in quite a while). I'm wondering whether the 10% increase to CritD and CritH is worth the loss of the bio proc.

I have never used the Protonic Polaron weapons, so I cannot speak about them. The Bio-Molecular Disruptors work well against a large number of targets. The Radiation proc is useful no matter who you are shooting at.

Bio-Molecular Disruptors/Phasers are solid weapons. The proc is reliable and there are various means on increasing their damage since they count as "Radiation."

Protonic Polaron? The Polaron Proc is a very mixed bag. The nice thing is that it bypasses shields.

First is the chances to occur. It's a 25% chance to proc ONLY after you land a Critical Hit. Your Crit Hit greatly determines effectiveness but a mediocre Crit Hit Build will equal out in the end to the typical 2.5% Proc Chance of most other weapons/procs. For example:

10% Crit Hit build with Protonic Polaron Proc?

.10 x .25 = .025, or 2.5% chance to occur, basically. But what about a higher Crit Hit build?

25% Crit Hit build with Protonic Polaron Proc?

    .25 x .25 = .0625, or 6.25% chance to occur.

The problem however is that there's very little means to raise Proton Damage altogether. Pretty much limited to Dyson TAC Consoles, and those are horrible. They do not increase Crit Hit nor Crit Severity like the Spire TAC Consoles do. Also, they sort of "halve" the damage increase between the base damage and Proton damage. You're killing your Crit performance and neutering your base weapon damage to make a Proc hit harder, which will not happen all the time.

Under normal circumstances I'd say no, the +10 CrtD isn't worth running a questionable weapon with the protonic weapon and giving up a useful energy-weapon proc for an iffy one.

HOWEVER, because you're a torp boat first and foremost and could gain significantly from +10 CrtH.....don't know. Its a harder question that way. Really you need someone who uses a lot of torp boats to give you that answer, and they're pretty specialized.

I am actually in the process of replacing my regular disruptors with the bio-molecular ones for the additional chance of damage.

I ended up compromising. I realized that I just needed the two-piece CC set to get the disruptor bonus. So I slotted the Experimental Proton Weapon instead of the heavy bio disruptor turret, and exchanged the CC tac console for the fleet photon tac console, vulnerability locator. I've noticed that it crits more often and harder when it does. I've seen 70k at the high end with averages in 50-60k range, this is per crit.

Thanks warmaker and regimala for your input. I appreciate it.
