Iconian Viral probes

woppy1woppy1 Member Posts: 78 Arc User
are you taking the p*** with these Ionian Viral Probes they are way over powered, at one point during the featured episode all of my subsystems were off line and my fix was on cooldown, there should be a limit of how many subsystems can be off line at any one time!

Just take them out before they get within 5km of you. An easy TS or BFAW should do the trick.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

Engineering Team to counter (or the new Iconian Resistance set), or AOE sci powers like Gravity Well or TBR. Probes are more obnoxious than dangerous.

    annoying, yes...

Strategy, my friend. Strategy is key.

you can also put skill points in : starship subsystem repair (resist subsystem offline) + you can use also a deflector like the nukara deflector which has + 17,5 starship subsystem repair :)

Throw a point defense console or aceton assimilator in your build. Tractor Beam Repulsors. Use carrier pets on intercept. Singularity console. Must be 20 ways to deal with probes.

I think the common denominator is: "what have you been doing until now to have such problems"

I thought subsystem repair only worked if you had the crew up. Most of the time, the crew dies pretty fast. If I'm in error, please let me know, as I may have to go back and change some skills then.

FAW or grav well always seem to work for me.

That is the problem... Nothing... Until the newer content (DR included) none of the enemies players face in episodes have any special abilities...

At most you'll encounter the occasional Grav Well, tractor beam or taking a single subsystem offline, then BOOM! you hit the Vaadwaur and their artillery from hell that could one-shot you (though they have been nerfed drastically, probably due to complaints, since DR's launch) and now the Iconian probes and weapon-gates...

The real problem is that, before the most recent content, enemies have no real special abilities requiring players to learn to associate abilities such as Engineering Team, Science Team and so forth with negating the effects of negative debuffs...

I've been hoping this would change with some of the revamping, but Cryptic are yet to update the older NPC's training manuals...

Um.... Gorn and the Malon both like to use a combination of mines and warp poo.

Voth have the reflective immunity shield, as well as a weak disable.

Borg love to use Tachyon beam and that shield neutralizer, oh and plasma fire. They also do tractor beams that they like to follow up with a cutting beam or a HY torpedo.... while your shields are down. Some of the Borg bosses use Sensor confusing powers too.

Hirogen love to spam scramble sensors.

Nausicaans have Siphon drones which can be a major pain if you don't have power drain resist.

Right, I was forgetting the Aceton Assimilators... But otherwise, none of those abilities really mean a damn when it comes to countering...

You just keep ploughing through - in episodes you can easily take a Borg HY to the face and come out the other side...

It's only the more recent content where enemies actually start to use abilities that actually require you to really think about countering them - other than Aceton Assimilators, but even then, provided you can withstand the blasts when you phaser them, a couple torps and they're destroyed...

if you have a ship that can use command powers, Reroute Power from Life Support will make you immune to the probes while it's activated. It does increase the cool down on your powers but it's not that much.

Killing the probes with some AOE power is still the best way to go, but I'll sometimes have Reroute Power from Life Support slotted in pugs.

On the other hand, are there any consoles that give these out or just Iconians NPCs for the time being? I'd love to see a boxed ship or console that you can slot in your ship.

you have forgotten the tholians ;) they can disable the subsystems + they drain power and shields

I would also like to point out that the Gravitron Torpedo (I think that's what it's called, at least,) from the Dyson Rep can 1-hit kill those things. It's a bit pricey, but it's great in pretty much any fight.

There are tons of counters to this.

Threads like this one are the reason why we can't have nice things. How can we expect to have any sort of decent challenge in the game or improved AI, that's not just hyper-inflated HP meat bags, if people don't think to use any counters but instead call for everything that's not just sitting there to be nerfed?

Counters include, but are not limited to:
    • Beam: Fire at Will
    • Cannon: Scatter Volley
    • Torpedo: Spread
    • Eject Warp Plasma
    • Plasma Shockwave
    • Photonic Shockwave
    • Hanger pets
    • Photonic Fleet
    • Fleet Support
    • Gravity Well
    • Tyken's Rift
    • Destabilizing Resonance Beam
    • Manual Targetting
    • Moving out of range

Probes are quite nasty indeed. But for me it's the solar gates. They never stop, they never miss, and they never so much as lose power over distance, Forget going 10 or even 20 km away to lose them. They will still scorch you from 100% shields to debris fields in seconds.

Yep, they're the thing I hate too... Though Reverse Shield Polarity seems to make a mockery of them and Feedback Pulse doesn't go astray either....

Otherwise, you just gotta take them down quickly before they burn through you...

I think my biggest issue with the probes is just how obnoxious the cool down seems to be on them. They don't cause me to die or anything, they just slow down fights that would normally be relatively simple. Of course it would help if the npc ally in House Peg actually did something other than catch on fire and sit there. I'm probably going to have to look at ways to specifically counter them in the future, if only to save time.

Personally I have a greater dislike for the raiders that constantly like to ram you. They can do ridiculous damage. However, they may have nerfed the damage, because while they used to really hurt, they weren't doing as much damage today when I ran through the mission again.

For new players this things can be terrible to fight with. For any new player I would recomend a couple of beam fire at wills to keep them up.

If you have the marks I would suggest getting the following:
OMEGA REP--HONOR GUARD ENGINES(ADAPTED MACO ENGINES)---The hot restart will bring your engines back online faster and allow you to keep moving.

NAKURA REP--DEFLECTOR AND SHIELDS---Having 2 peices of this set will bring your weapons back on line faster. Being able to shoot them really helps.

DELTA REP--DELTA WARP CORE----Being able to teleport 5km away from them can by your abilities time to reset.

All these will do is make things a little more managable for you. The viral probes will seek you out even after you are killed though. I found they will seek you out even if you are 50+km from the battle site were you died. Their range is unlimited...they will hunt you down. This might be the only change I could see with them.

    Speed.

    AOE / Multitarget Attacks.

    CC.

These will carry you through against Heralds. All the stuff that the Heralds do are negated easy by some commonly used abilities. AOE attacks and CC (i.e. Grav Well) as well as fast movement will make your experience against the Heralds much easier.

A healthy dose of BFAW, GW applied by the team murders the spam that the Heralds are dependent on to beat players. Mega GW builds are magnificent here in yanking all the deadly spam in one spot for effective killing. And the Herald spam spreads pretty far, so Mega GW will grab even more of them to pull in. These things also help in quickly neutralizing Solar Gateways or the more powerful Oblivion Gateways.

Engineering Team is vital in getting you quickly recovered from Viral Matrix effects.

If your ship can go fast, you better STAY fast. Slow or stationary targets will suffer more against Herald attacks and their numerous spam. But watch your Six. The MRfighters are very fast and nimble and like the Herald Raiders, they do ramming attacks that bypass shields. The way a bunch of players build and fly their Escorts, you'll be easily overtaken by the Herald Raiders and most especially the MRfighters.

Yeah, they can disable a ship for 10 seconds.
    Quite deadly.

Not everyone uses the frikken beams.

If you're not doing any multi-target/AOE attacks against the Heralds, you're not helping. Don't matter if it's BFAW, CSV (though less effective for plenty of reasons), TS... SOME sort of series of attacks that hit multiple targets. Because if you're not, then can you at least do CC?

Because against the Heralds, if you can't cut down the amount of spam, or if you can't do CC, you're dead weight.

I do use the Cannon version, on the current character, yes, but as you said, it's not that effective.
But I am annoyed by the fact you're basically FORCED to use beams.
I have a beam boat on a different character, and a torp/mine boat on yet another.
    I like variety.

If they're not effective, I'm sorry, but you're doing something wrong.

There are more than one counter. I listed about 10 on the previous page.

If nothing else, you can totally free to, you know, manually target them and destroy them...

    \\

I'm sure that isn't what happened.

I'm sure you got in a bit to close to quickly and ate every single one of the the disables.
Or you got caught up in a swarm. Same thing.

Viral Probes on their own are just an annoyance.

And I'm sure because Viral Probes on their own don't do what you say happened.

Ionic Turbulence does though. All by itself.

And there's no counter for that besides getting out of range as fast as you can.
