Why I love STO...

xaosmg123xaosmg123 Member Posts: 70 Arc User
Hey all. Just figured I'd start a thread for people who appreciate and love all of Star Trek Online!!

I grew up with TNG and other Trek series being on tv and watching some episodes here and there - and I did like it. But I wasnt hooked or even close to being a Trekkie. lol. Anyways, I end up playing the trial and i liked it but it didnt hold my attention past a month or so. Then a year or so later, I see an episode of Enterprise on tv during a weekend afternoon. I never saw this series and I LOVED IT!!! I immediately went and watched more episodes online, while at the same time reinstalling STO!! I log in and now that I am more open to it I experience it in a different way. Everything is awesome in STO and I play a few months here and there over the next year or so. Then I take a 6 month break and return during the new LOR xpac.... O M G!!! Absolutely AMAZING!!! And every season in the last few years has been making STO bigger and better!!

So I am hooked and I love this game!!! The graphics, the colors, the effects, the ship combat, the ground combat, the pvp, the queued events, episodes, featured eps, random encounters in space, crafting, the bridge officers "game" and so much more!!

STO has the BEST system in place for Dilithium/F2p/conversions/etc that I have ever seen. You can even do surveys for Zen!

Every time I log in I still cant believe that this small generic-template -like Cryptic mmo turned into this massive game. The scale is bigger than I expected it to ever be and its been growing a hectic pace and everything is just improving!

Also, while I have run into a few sc*mbags over the years - I have come across a ton of friendly, awesome players. Families, couples, kids, twenty-40 somethings, mature adults, etc... A lot of people are intelligent and friendly, but also excited and happy to be playing STO. So many mmos nowadays are full of jaded, bitter vereran mmo azzhats and they dont appreciate all they get. Look at STO for the free player. Or even if u pay monthly- we get an unlimited amount of hours of entertainment for essentially nothing! Or pennies a daylol.

I hope that more people try out STO like I did and see its not what they expected. I was afraid it wouldnt work as an mmo and it would be dialog heavy and small since its a cryptic game - but nope! It shows people the most EPIC side of Trek and because its in the future trek timeline (2409) they have certain liberties they can take that they couldnt in the tv shows or movies. SO EPIC!!!!!!

So anyways, once I started playing STO again I was hooked on Trek more than I ever thought possible! So I watched the entire Enterprise series, then tng, then ds9, then voyager and even some of the original series! And I started reading the Trek novels! THERE ARE HUNDREDS!!! I always hated playing an amazing mmo or game but there was no "outside the game" lore or information or anything to read. With STO we get all the tv shows, all the movies and all the books to add even more to game! Knowing the history and backstories makes it sooo much more real and immersive :)

I wish more people would get excited about the mmos they play. Or ONLY play an mmo that you are excited about and cant wait to play again. Too many are burnt out and bitter and jaded and only play STO for one small part like just pvp, or only mining or only queued stuff - idk. I just wish more people would play mmos they enjoy ALL of and are excited to play and happy. Some play mmos too much each day and some play too many mmos at a time.

I know there are those out there that are always happy playing STO and get excited and love to do all PVP and PVE, but also craft and even roleplay! SO those that love this game - tell us why :)

What brought you to Star Trek Online?

Why do you love STO?

<<<<Do you only love STO but hate the books/movies/tv shows? If so, PLEASE DO NOT POST your annoyances or complaints or any negativity. This is a post for those who love and appreciate STO!>>>>

The scary thing is that this game really is something SPECIAL and it should be advertised and promoted! All I see now are banners and online adds on mmo gaming websites. They need to promote the game to non-mmo gamers, non-gamers who own computers and console gamers with computers - as well as current mmo players. Instead, they ONLY promote their game to current mmo players! We need fresh blood - not more bitter, greedy and jaded vet players.

Remember when you used to take time to walk around every map in STO - even random generated ones? Remember when you would change camera angles just because it looked cool ? Remember reading EVERY bit of npc dialog and quest text - just to learn everything u can?

When we first played mmos we appreciated everything and it was all awe-inspiring and amazing. But now people play too much and get burnt out. STO needs more awesome players who love it all!

United Star Legion is recruiting! Contact me ingame to join up - T2/T1+++ medium size and growing. Looking for players who enjoy rping, pvp and pve - or all :)

There are several players who have posted similar threads, but it's always nice to read a fresh story how STO has positively made an impression on players. I'm glad you found STO as I did and enjoy it here. I fully agree with both of you, you have made crucial points.

    - STO does have one of the best game models for anyone's schedule among any MMO.
    - Despite a few creeps which you can find on any MMOG, players are generally helpful and friendly. Those who aren't only shame themselves not STO.
    - A great point made above is it would be a good move to advertise in fresh areas more, attract newer gamers and those who might not at first think STO is a game for them.

STO is appealing and mainstream, it's not over-bearing or restrictive for squeezing every dime from people without giving much in return like many other mmo's do and it's a beautiful place to explore. The artwork and visuals alone are worth the price of admission to this Virtual cosmic theme park.

Oh, did we mention yet the game is FREE!?!?! :D

    Thank you, OP. Much appreciated.

It is far too easy to get all wrapped up in fault finding and finger pointing and forget why I started playing this game in the first place. Which is because it is Star Trek based and fun. I am a lifelong Star Trek fan and I have played or looked at nearly every single Star Trek game ever made. This game is the current way I get my fix.

I had to remind myself lately why I play this game. Which is because I enjoy it. It has faults and problems and other things which make it less than perfect. But overall, it is as good a way as any to waste a couple hours on a lazy Saturday afternoon. If I let myself dwell too long on the "STO Which Ought To Be!" I find myself missing out on the "STO Which Is." Which is a shame.

So thank you again, OP. How refreshing to come to the forums and find someone who is enthusiastic about playing STO.

I enjoy sto quite a lot. Its always got something to do, pretty casual friendly, got good people, reminds me of a show I adore, and is very pretty.

My favorite mission of any kind is the romulan ground queue mine trap. I wish more queues were like it with no boss fight and rewards based on how many people you save not how many you kill. It is very trek like.

I love that I can customize my character from level 1 and my gear doesn't determine how I look.

I love that I control how my boffs look and that I have a whole crew of doffs to run missions for me.

I love that while there is a cash store, many items can be given to friends or sold on the auctionhouse so people who don't have money can still enjoy the cash goodies. Even fleet ships can be given as gifts because you can give a friend five modules if they don't have the c-store version.

The foundry is an amazing tool but more importantly its as close to the holodeck as we can get today. I can enjoy your stories and tip you to let you know I had fun.

The winter and summer events are also fun. I totally just hang out and have fun. I ice skate on the frozen lake, fly around the island or tool around on the power boards (I mean outside the missions/races just doing it for fun). They are cool and silly and I appreciate that.

And... *waves giant foam "taco iz #1" foam finger on left hand*
*waves "joejing iz also #1" foam finger on right hand*

Don't ask how I'm still typing... I took lessons from strongbad ~.^

Aye, STO is pretty amazing for an MMO.

Often times I get burnt out on dilithium grinding, or event stuff, and I put the game down for a while. Watch some Star Trek on TV (any of them really, they're all good, still can't bring myself to watch the animated series though lol), and then find myself itching to come back to STO.

There's just something about this game. It could be the space and ground combat in the same game, or the rather F2P friendly manner in which STO handles microtransactions, or even the frequent updates, new missions, new ships, equipment, gear, etc...

I won't say STO is perfect, there are many areas where STO falls short compared to other games, I've noticed more than a few. Even had an idea or two on how STO could be better (most recent idea is linked in my Signature).

For all its failings, I keep coming back. That is all the proof I need that STO is a great game. :)

    I can't say i love STO.
It's more the lack of alternatives.

I didn't attack the OP, i just stated my opinion that i like STO, but do not love it.
Just because someone isn't fully agreeing with the OP doesn't mean i'm against it.

But nice to see you acting as moderator.

I also love STO because our moderators sometimes even show up after hours to clean up the mess left by trolls.

Cheers to whichever moderator was responsible. <3

I get to tool around the galaxy in starships I used to watch on TV and in the movies. How much more cool can you get than that?
