R&D always consumes max resources?

Greetings,

I have noticed an issue with the R&D system that has been bugging me for some time. I did open a CS ticket for this issue but have never heard back from anyone at Cryptic.

The issue is this: No matter what the initial outcome page states, the jobs ALWAYS consume the initial listed amount of resources.

For instance, you go to create several sub components, let's take "pressurization chamber" as our example. Each one calls for 2 tetrazine gas and 1 z-particle. I want to create 3 of these. That would be 6 tetrazine and 3 z-particles, follow me so far? I'm using a fabrication engineer with +5 skill and I'm a lvl 15 crafter. This brings my total skill to 155 and the recommended is 40. It's very likely that I will crit this job. Once I hit "start task" I can see that yes, I have, and the "consumed costs" shows as only 2 tetrazine gas and 1 z-particle. This is great, as my high skill has allowed me to consume less materials. But wait! I had looked at my inventory before the job started and the actual outcome was different. In fact, I consumed the full 6 and 3 as originally shown. In other words, you NEVER get the reduced material crit outcome, no matter what is listed.

While this is not a big deal for tetrazine and z-particles, it is a HUGE deal when crafting with any of the more rare or costly R&D materials. I visit these forums with regularity and I am surprised that no one has noticed or said anything regarding this before. I think most would take the results page at face value and trust what we are reading, but this big of a hole in the system really diminishes my enjoyment of said system.

Another glaring hole is that you still cannot cancel a job. Every other crafting mechanic I have seen in a game has allowed you to terminate early if so desired. Granted there would be some sort of penalty, you could consume some of the resources, but when these tasks take hours and days to complete, to have to spend dil for a mistake is pretty greedy.

Sorry to get off track, please investigate for yourselves and fill me in if I'm missing something fundamental to my understanding of what it means to "crit" an R&D job. I know that the quantities sometimes increase, and that does appear to be working as intended.

Peace and Long Life,
John

When you multi-craft, the "items were consumed" list always shows the cost of ONE item. It's a display bug, the correct amount of materials were actually consumed for the quantity you're making.

Critting a component project will produce 3x the amount of components (so if you put in 3, critting it would make 9). It doesn't change the amount of materials used.

Ahhh...OK I get it now. For some reason I thought I read that you had the chance to consume less resources if you were way over-skilled for the task. Just wishful thinking I guess.

Thank you for the reply, Warpangel
