Passing time at work earlier, me and a colleague were discussing sci-fi shows and characters, and came up with our own crew, or rather, bunch of senior officer, cause obviously thinking up an entire crew would take some time. :P

Anyhow, thought I'd bring that discussion here. The rules are simple, you create a crew using the labels set below, and can use any character from any science-fiction show that you so desire. You can't mix and match careers though (ie; you can't have Julian Bashir as your Chief Engineer, Michael Garibaldi (Babylon 5) as your Doctor, or Ka D'argo (Farscape) as your Counselor etc) - the roles just wouldn't fit. I know this is all make-belief anyway, but I'm trying to stick within the realm of realism.

Now, starting with your Starship Name, then move onto your senior crew that'll consist of:

  1. Captain
  2. First Officer (2nd in command)
  3. Doctor
  4. Counselor
  5. Scientist #1
  6. Scientist #2
  7. Scientist #3
  8. Communications Officer
  9. Tactical Officer
  10. Security Officer #1
  11. Security Officer #2
  12. Alien Adviser #1
  13. Alien Adviser #2
  14. Quartermaster
  15. Chief Engineer

Please leave character names and reference the show they're from (other people might be curious of your selection and wish to look them up). Should you wish it also, feel free to explain your choices. :)

You can (should you wish it) change specializations, but lets limit it to #15 per post.

First things that came to mind:

    1. Captain - Walter White, Breaking Bad
    2. First Officer (2nd. in Command) - Dr. Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park
    3. Doctor - Avon, Blake's 7
    4. Counselor - Laura Roslin, Battlestar Galactica
    5. Scientist #1 - Gwen Cooper, Torchwood
    6. Scientist #2 - Dr. Ruth Leavitt, The Andromeda Strain (1971) *loved this character, always
    7. Scientist #3 - Peter Venkman, Ghostbusters
    8. EMH - Samantha, Her (2013)
    9. Communications Officer - Ellie Arroway, Contact (1997)
    10. Tactical Officer - Revy, Black Lagoon
    11. Helmsman - Marty McFly, Back to the Future
    12. Ambassador - Jean Luc Picard (with wife, Beverley Crusher-Picard)
    13. Chief Engineer - Tank, The Matrix
    14. Quartermaster - Nog, DS9
    15. 2nd Engineer - Marvin, Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy

Working with the assumption that these are the same CHARACTERS, but by different names. They would have different backstory to fit the context of the show obviously, but their appearance/behavior would be the same.

I think I stumbled onto a theme here, also missing 6. 6 is too awesome to be messing around on a space ship, he's stolen the TARDIS whilst the rest are playing Star Trek.

Hmm, I would have had Dalek Caan as the communications officer, always nice to hear his pleasant ramblings when you ring up the Saucer.

Also, Pig Slaves ? you need Ogrons, just as ugly, but with more than one brain cell between them.

Ok, this will take some time, but nevertheless it's fun so here we go B)

Captain: Sirius Verax (my STO main: human-cardassian hybrid, highly intelligent, resistant to pain and torture, skilled in command, intelligence, engineering and piloting, has telekinetic abilities), and in case I can't enlist my own captain, my first two choices would be John Sheridan (Babylon 5) and/or Jean-Luc Picard
First Officer: Susan Ivanova (Babylon 5)
      Doctor #1: Bashir
Doctor #2: Jennifer Keller (SGA) (my ship has two sickbays due to a full saucer separation ability - when I said full I meant that both parts can work independently just like in the case with Prometheus' MVA mode)
Doctor's main assistants: Trance Gemini (Andromeda) and Doctor from Voyager
      Counselor: Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan (Farscape)
      Scientist #1: Data
      Scientist #2: 7 of 9
      Scientist #3: Spock
Scientist #4: Dr. Nicholas Rush (SGU)
Scientist #5: Samantha Carter (SG-1) (you just can't have enough of scientist aboard so I think two more of them won't hurt)
Communications Officer: Hoshi Sato (that was an easy one :D )
Tactical Officer: Worf (also pretty easy choice)
      Chief of security: Odo
Security deputy officer: Michael Garibaldi (Babylon 5)
Security chief and deputy main assistants: Teal'C (SG-1) and Ronon Dex (SGA)
      Alien Adviser #1: G'Kar (Babylon 5)
Alien Adviser #2: Dellen (Babylon 5)
Quartermaster: Sikozu Svala Shanti Sugaysi Shanu (Farscape)
      Chief Engineer: Miles O'Brien
Chief Engineer's main assistant: Seamus Harper (Andromeda)
Helmsmans: Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell (SG1-) and Tom Paris

Starship: USS Dragonstar - heavily retrofitted Sovereign class battlecruiser

Now I know I added few more of them than I actually should, but I have very good reasons for it which I explained up in the list. Hope it's a good list at least :D

EDIT: I did some minor changes in the list and added helmsman (pilot) category.

Using only canon characters. This ship is all set to take on anything from a Reaper invasion to the Ori to Anubis to the freaking Galactic Empire:

Ship: USS Enterprise-D, upgraded to Andromeda-class standard.

Flag officer and chief diplomat: Jean-Luc Picard.
      Captain: The Sisko.
First Officer (2nd in command): Jack O'Neill.
Doctor: Leonard McCoy. Either one, he's the only one JJ did right.
Deputy medical chiefs: USAF Major Janet Fraiser, Starfleet Commander Beverly Crusher, and Dr. Julian Bashir.
Dawazz (the closest thing to a counselor this ship will ever need): Ousanas (from the Belisarius Series).
General medical-related stuff and general awesomeness: The EMH.
Scientist #1: Mr. Spock. The real one, not the fake JJ one.
      Scientist #2: Data.
Scientist #3: Major Sam "Blew up a sun by accident once" Carter.
Communications Officer and Coal Mine Canary: Daniel Jackson.
Tactical Officer: James T. Kirk. The real one, not the fake JJ brat.
Chief of security: Odo. That is all.
Security Officer #1: Worf, son of Mogh.
      Security Officer #2: Teal'c.
      Security Officer #3: Ronon Dex.
Bespoke Multipurpose Badass: Rana Sanga (from the Belisarius series). He cuts dudes in half. With. One. Hit. And he out-Klingons the Klingons.
MACO team leader: Commander Jane Shepard, because Shepard.
MACO squad: Wrex, Remata'klan (the Third from DS9: "Rocks and Shoals"), JJKhan (seriously, Khan was the hero in Into Dorkness), Darth Revan (because KOTOR).
Alien Adviser: Supreme System Lord Ba'al. Hail Ba'al!
      Quartermaster: Miles O'Brien.
      Chief Engineer: Geordi LaForge.
Deputy chief engineer: Scotty. The real one, not the JJ one.

      Now, here's an EEEEEEVIL! crew:

      Ship: Borg cube.

      Captain: Jonathan Archer.
First officer: Kathryn "The Starscream" Janeway of Borg.
      Doctor: Phlox.
      Counselor: Emperor Palpatine.
Science chief: Subcommander Hemp von Wiener, formerly T'Pol.
      Communications officer: Gul Madred.
Tactical officer and racist stereotype: Chakotay.
Security chief and appallingly stupid Sith lord: Darth Malak.
      Alien Adviser: System Lord Anubis.
Alien Adviser #2: Take your pick of Supreme Daleks and Dalek Emperors.
      Quartermaster: Neelix.
Chief engineer: That alien engineer from ENT: "Unexpected".

      And the Ship of Fools:

      Ship: USS Enterprise NX-01.

Captain: Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande. This guy thought that it was a great idea to have his men throw javelins at a sandbag wall, and then to charge said wall.
First Officer: Lord Chelmsford. For those who don't get it, this guy got his technologically-superior butt kicked by a bunch of dudes with spears because he literally didn't read his own book on tactics and strategy.
      Doctor: Stephen Moffat.
      Science chief: JJ Abrams.
      Comm officer: Rick Berman.
      Tactical officer: Brannon Braga.
Security chief: Darius III of Persia. Got eighteen kinds of rear-end product kicked out of him at Issus and Guagemala through an epic lack of tactical skill despite vastly outnumbering and "outgunning" his enemy.
Alien Adviser: Kenneth freaking BILLER, the worst writer in Star Trek.
Quartermaster: The Dukes of Hazzard. They do not amuse me.
      Chief Engineer: Trip "Catfish" Tucker.

      • Captain: Paragon Female Shepard (Mass Effect). Compassionate when possible, righteously badass when necessary, and devoted to her team.
      • First Officer: Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect). There's no Shepard without Vakarian. More to the point, also a badass and has a wide range of useful skills: cop, sniper, weapons tech, military operations...
      • Chief Medical Officer: Julian Bashir
      • Counselor: Jolee Bindo (Knights of the Old Republic). Retired Jedi with decades of experience, and compassionate and snarky as needed.
      • Communications Officer: Nyota Uhura (JJtrek version).
      • Science Officer: Dr. Daniel Jackson (Stargate)
      • Tactical Officer: Wedge Antilles (Star Wars). Finest starfighter pilot ever, later advances into a flag officer role.
      • Security Officer: Odo
      • Quartermaster: Jenit Sulla (Ciaphas Cain). Regimental quartermaster NCO given a field commission, and rather spectacularly cuts through a bureaucracy that makes the Old Republic (as of the prequels) look like a model of efficiency.
      • Chief Engineer: Mahi Ma (X3: Terran Conflict). The man rebuilt a millennia-old jumpgate control hub originally constructed by a group of species that uploaded themselves into a Dyson sphere, cobbling its systems back to like-new condition with modern parts. Plus he's a really sweet and kindly little squid-man.

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Starsword, don't forget that Jackson is really handy for figuring out if something's lethal.

I'm at a disadvantage in this one because I haven't seen that many different science fiction shows. But a while ago there was a kind of fantasy football-style thread, making up all-time-champion crews from Star Trek characters, so I'll start with the line-up I came up with for that. It was already a bit outside these rules since it had two from books, but the original rules seem to have gone by the board a bit by now so this isn't too bad!
      • Captain: Ayelborne (TOS: "Errand of Mercy"). Even if he wasn't allowed to keep all his powers, his outlook on life would undoubtedly cause confusion at Starfleet HQ.
      • XO: Dr Leonard McCoy (TOS). We're going to need somebody to keep the Captain's feet touching the ground.
      • Chief Science Officer: Spock (either TOS or rebooted film). Because Spock is great. I rather like the version in the first JJ film, though only once he's growed up a bit; in the film he's a bit too young and a lot too thin-skinned for that senior a job.
      • Communications Officer: Charles Evans (TOS: "Charlie X"). The Thasians' claim that he can't learn to control his powers deliberately is clearly rubbish, he did so several times in the episode. Hire a nice patient Vulcan to tutor him. (In the vast universe of Vulcan splinter groups, there must be some. :) ) Why Comms? Well... he was quite into the engineering stuff in "Charlie X", and his strongest suit seems to be interfering with communications and electronics. So what would happen if you did that next to a Borg cube?
      • Medical Officer: Dr Simon Van Gelder (TOS: "Dagger of the Mind"). Since brain trouble of one kind or another is a frequent hazard in Star Trek, an actual medically qualified psychiatrist - not just a counsellor - would be useful. Also, because he's one of the biggest darn heroes in the whole series. Think about it. I suffer from OCD (real OCD, not joke OCD) so I know exactly what that would be like in real life - to be struggling to do something and your brain won't let you do it. Believe me, it's one of the hardest things in the universe. While negotiating that, he breaks out of jail and stows away in a box, then submits to a mind meld with someone who admits he doesn't know what he's doing. The man has GUTS.
      • Chief Diplomatic officer: Arrhae i-Khellian t'llhweiir (TOS novel: "The Empty Chair"). She worked her way up through the byzantine politics of Romulus to a seat in the Senate, despite [spoiler: highlight to read] actually being a human spy; so I'd say she's qualified.
      • Chief Operations Officer: The mama Horta (TOS: "Devil in the Dark"). Someone that can bring up several thousand children at once is a good person to have in charge of logistics.
      • Security: The second Mrs Crater (TOS: "The Man Trap"). She's stronger than a Vulcan and she can disguise herself as anyone; useful abilities. They must be sane enough when they have salt, or they couldn't have built a civilisation. (That episode never made a lot of sense. Just GIVE her some salt, already.)
      • Somewhere about the place: Druana (Voyager novel: "Seven of Nine"). Minor character, a wily and humorous old sculptor of the Lennli people (they're bright red with seven fingers) who got assimilated and appears in flashbacks. I just like her, so I'm going to say she acquired some kind of useful technical skill from being Borg, like Seven did.

Now, we've got more slots here than the fantasy-football thread had, so let's fill them with some random characters I like - some that make sense, some less so...

      • Captain: Ayelborne.
      • First Officer: Dr McCoy.
      • Doctor: Dr Van Gelder.
      • Pilot: Marvin (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). (Not the one that looks like a squeaky toy.) May be one of the few beings good enough at multidimensional maths to actually chase down a Borg cube. I will call in my ship's finest computer engineers and gorram fix his personality chip. And the diodes. If, when capable of not sulking, he still sulks, we follow Starfleet Difficult Genius Protocol #341, and assign him a cabin a long way from everyone else.
      • Scientist #1: Spock.
      • Scientist #2: Trillian (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). She has the physics and she'll help keep #1 and #3 in line.
      • Scientist #3: 12th Doctor (Doctor Who).
      • Communications Officer: Charles Evans.
      • Diplomatic Officer: Arrhae.
      • Security Chief: Danny Pink (Doctor Who). From the few times they let him have a piece of the action, Danny seems as if he might actually be rather awesome (and if he can handle the Coal Hill Gifted and Talented Class, he can handle even THIS crew). If the worst comes to the worst, well, my main's ship keeps up a regular production line of reclaimed Borg drones, how hard can a Cyberman be?
      • Security Officer #1: M-113 person.
      • Alien Adviser: Druana. OK, she can do that.
      • Intelligence: Svlad Cjelli, alias Dirk Gently, alias one or two other things (Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency). On a ship like this, nobody's going to ask awkward questions about where you got your information.
      • Quartermaster: The mama Horta.
      • And the ship's shuttle is AQUILA (AQUILA), that'd be fun.
      • Dang it I'm still short a Chief Engineer. Chief Engineer: Professor Branestawm. He's been on the telly, hasn't he? :D
