I believe they call that ceasing the moment.

Only of you have the Tipler Cylinder! Wakka wakka wakka!

I know... I couldn't help myself... you're looking for "seize" the moment/day, from carpe diem.

Meh the most famous/succesful MMO comes to mind ... sure there might be some Pets etc that are "limited" but nothing that would really "matter" like Ships & Gear ... huge difference ...

I'm going to assume you're talking about WoW, so.... eh, that game is absolutely full of no-longer-available things that "collectors" raised a huge stink about on the forums every time they went away. Cute toys that came from quests that no longer exist due to the Cataclysm (and/or were limited in their use even before that), achievements that went away when their zones were changed/quests were removed, limited world event rewards, class quest gear, etc, etc, etc.

(and we weren't talking about whether the things "matter like Ships & Gear", we were talking about the Completionist Collector, who wants the ability to get it all, just because.)

    *fixed that four you*

Imagine ... there are different reason to collect these Things/Ships ... especially if we're talking about Ships ... Console Sets, Hangar Pets etc etc etc ... it's not just "because" ...

    => Collector =/= Collector ...

PS : Afaik there is a difference between (not) getting a Murloc Custome from Blizzcon & not being able to complete your Console-Set ...

You are also comparing to a highly successful game. A game that has millions of players and no real danger of dieing. If you have a large and healthy community the community itself is enough to keep people in the game and draw others. In that situation you can make different decisions.

STO does not have that. If STO had a very large and active community with lots of in game content it would be different. Right now it can't afford to alienate people over something so trivial.

Agreed. Many of the players I used to play with no longer play. I rarely play. I have to admit that I do see longtimers fading away. At the end of the day Cryptic has nobody but themselves to blame for this, though.

I love my Risian Cruiser, the U.S.S. Ruby Rhod - hot Hot HOT!

I ran it through a few Iconian STFs, and was amused to see the solar wings are constantly opening and closing to stabilize the ship from the Iconian wave effects.

You see, I was here for the events

What's stopping them from allowing the projects to be slotted if you have the pearls?

Why wouldn't they allow that when they do something as TRIBBLE as announcing a currency change about a month before the event starts?

If they had told me LAST YEAR that this was the last chance to slot the ships, I would have, but no
They have to TRIBBLE over long time players for reasons I still haven't gotten an adequate explanation for.

I don't even care if the ships aren't the best, I never was one for the DPS race anyway.

because that's the way they decided to do it even if it might disappoint some players, you`ve just got to make your choices and live with the consequences.
as I said in my last post I took the chance and slotted the project in the CC event and fed in all the shards I had, I didn't know when I did it that if the project would be there when the next event come up or even if there would be another event, they might have even took CC out of the game altogether like they did with 'no win'.
as it happened it all paid off for me and I was able to eventually finish the project and collected the reward.

if you had followed a similar plan even though you can never be sure of the outcome you would have been able to finish the ship projects this year with the new tokens, it a risk and a gamble but it would have paid off.

as it stands you took the choice to hang onto your pearls and didn't slot the projects you could have been ok with this but it just one of those times you made the wrong choice and theres not much you can do about it, cryptic has made its choice and unless they have a change of heart that's that.

there have been times I have been disappointed with cryptics choices but if you want to play the game you just have to learn to live with it.

if any players are so incensed by a couple of lousy ships that they quit the game then they cant enjoy playing the game as much as I do because it would take a lot more then that to make me quit.
and that's including all the other bad choices they have made in the past, I still think its a great game I enjoy playing and that's all that matters to me.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

I am really looking forward to the Winter Event already. Maybe we will get a T6Breen Cruiser (only Canon ship ) but if they do the same thing, they did witht the Summer event it could be from a totally different Race. Maybe Andorian/Aenar if its still "cold" related or a totally unexpected ship.

I really like the changes because its kinda weird going to battle with a heavily armed Party/Cruise-ship. Like the Queen Mary 2 with Rocket Launchers and Turrets

I just read a comment on the reddit forums of a player who expressed his disappointed he mised last years summer event due to the birth of his daughter. On top of all the other players reasons why they had to miss an event....in a game...that is for entertainment. ..... and throwing a fit that real life got in the way and Cryptic decided to change their own game is completely utterly sad and stupid at the same time.

Comments have been made about what customer service is about, and granted some situations make sense (not related to this topic), are down right laughable. I know the replies i am going to get with players wipping out their e-penises and their years of real life knowledge, all i can state, which will be discounted by many, it is a game.

if you cannot state a valid frakin point in a meaningful discussion, your wasting space on the forums.

For all of you act cool and name drop the "real space" game you play, quit adding garbage to the discussion.

In the time I have been playing STO I have never once set foot on Risa, honestly the ships never interested me at all. The Corvette is a very fast ship for sure, and can look cool but I can think of many other comparable ships that are just way better. The cruiser was (in my opinion) just silly, but I know some people liked it.
This year I think I am actually going to participate in this jolliness as the ship (what I know about it) appeals to me, a free t6 trait for those not so loved toons is welcome.
I find a t6 ship/trait (nowadays) to be much more useful in the long term than a t5 escort/cruiser that might get a few days use before being drydocked or decommissioned to make way for something that has a longer lifespan.
This is all my personal opinion of course.

To be honest what I think happened is this...

They were gonna make Risian T6 ships - two of them and t6 versions of the current T5s.
One was gonna be tied to the jet pack game and the other to a diving game. The 'vette with pilot spec and the cruiser with command.

Only the minigames and/or ships weren't ready for the event. And since the event is at a fixed time that wouldn't do.

So they went instead with what they were gonna use as the next lockbox ship (Ferengi box revamp) instead - and which was ready and just tied it to the existing minigame.

Personally I think it's rubbish. The Nandi should have been a Ferengi Box revamp (with set bonuses to the dkora). The Risian vette and cruiser need t6 versions (especially if the t5 versions are being retired from new players) and need to be rewards for the RISA event.

The ferengi hate risa. not enough rain.

This game is going don the toilet as its being led by people that don't know what they are doing.

You've got a really strange perspective there, guy. From what I've seen of Jam Jamz tweets and others these dudes are just really stoked to be paid to design ships. I have no clue how you turned "retiring ships" into "throwing the ship design team under the bus". You people create so much drama where there is none it just blows the mind.

I could not have said it better myself, bravo sir bravo to you, and to the rest of you.... oh my God... Just stop I swear you people keep tissue makers in business with all the crying you do...FFS 400 or so ships in the game and you whine about 2 smh ...just stop it

Hey get over it OP if you are a new player you have nothing to b@tch about. Second if you are a veteran player and never bothered to at least start the project tough thats your doing. If its a new toon on an old account hey no big deal I have two new toons that don't have the old Risian or Winter ships it doesn't bother me one bit. Further if you had actually read the notices if you had atrted the event ship you can finish getting iy with the new currency again no big deal. Plus seriously how many of the Risian ships do you actually see in a PVE mission lately? Not many. So bye to the old and hello to the new hopefully better t6 ship.

This makes a lot of sense. The D'Kora was the first lockbox ship, after all, so is in line for some T6 love. If true, it is all the more likely that there's a console set bonus, which makes me happy, I've always loved my D'Kora...

I think I am just going to skip the event. This behavior of not allowing people to get old ships is bad for the game. It makes it harder for new players to join. It also means for the winter event that new players will never get the Sarr Theln and the frigate pets.

The only way to get them to change is to refuse to participate.

I know people like exclusive content but it is bad for the game in general and there is no good reason for it. You should be able to earn any previous ship with the new currency and the currency can change every year. That way people will play the event if they don't have the ships and they can't just save up for the next year.

I don't know of any other way to get them to change. Most of my friends have quit already due to various bad decisions cryptic keeps making.

Good don't participate means 1 less person to have to worry about being on the ground while I get my new ship.

Well, believe it. Because that's me. And I'm not alone. I joined, or re-joined, last year ... I believe I was leveling and figuring out the game during the last years summer event, I didn't even know what an event was.

Since then I've enjoyed finding interesting things, having a good time. ((well, aside from enforced upgrades, there are no drops really)) Quite frankly, this game is (or was) a collectors dream. There's very little retired-lockbox bullcrap. I've been able to find everything I've had my eyes on, until now. I had plans too, there's a few things I haven't tried. But, I do find my interest a bit diminished with this latest change. meh, c'est la vie.

You know, people like me aren't the only ones zapped by this change, busy adults ((trek was in the 1960s)) with lives and grandkids missed out here too. That's the real bother, the sense that they don't understand the customer.

There probably is room in this game for limited-time-offer gear. Heck, they do it already with stuff like samsar/dyson/obelisk. It's easy, build something, make an event, promote it with advertizing and email-bombs, etc etc. Done, goal met.

Here is how you DON"T do it. Announce right before an event, right when people are making plans "oh yeah hey ... um ... those ships are gone now, we want to make collectors items things now... so yeah, ah ... your welcome!"

So, this topic has been around for awhile. I was tempted to post my thought in the "official" thread, but "we can't have nice things" happened. I guess I'll post my musing here.

So, from here on out (and, presumably, the intent from the beginning) is to release a "free" ship, for a limited time, three times a year.

Yet the "powers that be" say that there is no profit in making a T6 exotic mudership for the KDF.

So... you can throw away 3 ships a year, yet you cant justify the expense of creating one ship that would exist FOREVER and would always be a source of revenue?

Here is how you DON"T do it. Announce right before an event, right when people are making plans "oh yeah hey ... um ... those ships are gone now, we want to make collectors items things now... so yeah, ah ... your welcome!"

And that right there is the core of the problem most others tend to overlook in favor of other irrelevant remarks regarding comparisons with other MMOs, the meaning of exclusivity, rationalizing it as a non-problem (it's just a game), self-centric remarks (why would you even want x item) etc.

    A) Provide a means to obtain a special event ship unlocked only during the special season - reputation tab special event queue that does not vanish without warning
    B) Provide the means to collect special event currency - again that does not vanish in your inventory without warning
    C) Provide special events that run at certain times of the year that, through word of mouth, and/or research (http://sto.gamepedia.com/Calendar_event) is advertisement to create anticipation to participate
    D) Make no mention of rewards, the major incentives for the events, for the entire year:
    i. suddenly becoming exclusive,
    ii. no longer obtainable

Whoever made that decision seems to not have a grasp of basic principles on which this apparently abstract notion of building trust is made, and of gaining positive (potential) customer relations.

The list A, B, C & D do not equate to: the grand prizes are removed effective immediately, your 'advance notice' is if you happen to have them slotted but we never announced in any way shape or form during or at the end of 2014 summer event to do so, and now the currency that had a certain subjective value for which you have already put in time and dedication in (pearls) gets replaced by something we (falsely) deem equivalent in our own eyes* (pearls = ships, pearls =/= spec points, space emotes, etc., without devaluing the currency as void).

It is not even about the ships, but about the lack of integrity that comes from providing statements on the basis of trust (A,B,C,D) then breaking them as a direct result of failing to provide actual notice.

What precedent does this set regarding the value of other items, especially when it conforms to a pattern of depreciating other hard-earned currency such as the reputation marks suddenly and again without notice being removed their dilithium trade-in bonus?

Sure, there's recognition, but only after the pages and pages of feedback stream in that this gets followed up with some amends, such as the extended dilithium bonus week, or the account-wide unlocks of all previous and going forward exclusive event ships. The very people arguing against this feedback are in fact benefactors of these compensation attempts, that in the overall picture, are actually completely unnecessary save the very simple fact of giving real advanced notice, and not ruining the perception of the value of time put in game - currency by making it suddenly represent something else.

This is like your bank suddenly issuing you an entirely different currency then the one you put in, one that's both weaker in value, and that can't be used in the country you're intending to shop in, with no ability to ever convert it back again.

What would advance notice look like?

    1. "The [grand prize] of [event] is becoming exclusive, and at the end of this event, unless the project(s) are slotted in the special event reputation tab, they will not longer be available.

    or,

    2. "The [grand prize] of [event] is becoming exclusive, and at the conclusion of this year's event, they will no longer be available, and all incomplete projects will be removed.

*not taking credit for the latter statement as it was made by someone else among the hundreds of pages of replies.

The Dyson Science Destroyer and Obelisk Carrier are available in-game for Lobi and the Fleet Spire. So no, they're still in the game.

The Kobali ship you might have a point on, but it's still relatively new to the game so we'll see if it makes a return. It took a while for the Obelisk Event Ship to make a permanent return, for example.

if it's dilithium, like the obelisk, I'd probably get one for each delta char, and a portion of that dilithium would come from zen

if it's lobi I will never buy it, too painful for an alt. I really love the console, a lot, but there are limits

EDIT: but it is interesting that it can take a while, for ships like that to be made available
