I did not even know that these existed until I picked up a pair in a random drop recently. I tried them and they looked fun, but they also seem to have a better/faster damage rate than rifles or other hand weapons. I am only going by what seems to be happening, not any numerical study.
Can any one of you
numbers guys let me know if I am fooling myself or if I am on to something?
Has someone come up with the best ways to use or improve them? Are there Talents and Skills best suited to offer Duel Pistol a boost on DPS or Accuracy? Are they better in the hands of one class over another, as in Eng/Sci/Tac officer?
Maybe none of that matter. They are just fun and that all they need to be.
Your thoughts?
Sig? What sig? I don't see any sig.

I wouldn't call myself a "numbers guy," but duel pistols are a fun and cool-looking Expose weapon. They have a shorter range then a comparable rifle would, so they do a little more DPS to compensate. You might want a pair with Crit Severity, to go with your Crit Chance and Crit Severity ground traits from reputations. I think the most important thing about them is probably that they're an AOE Expose weapon, and can potentially be very useful to set up Exploits on multiple targets. They'd pair well with an AOE Exploit weapon, like a split beam rifle, if you don't have one of the fancy new reputation rifles that come with an Expose setting and an Exploit setting built in.
They provide good DPS and you get a nice spray type DPS. Usually I use a sniper rifle to attack the group. Then swap over and just pistol them.
Some people hates them, but I have yet to find a reason not to like them. Everyone has their weapon they like or dislike.

Just don't get swarmed. They will make you pay for your fun.
For me, however, that has now changed to Pulsewaves, which still suffer from the range penalty as pistols, BUT:
* Have the benefit of a built in- kickback on the secondary.
They are also an expose weapon, which is important.
I do miss the satisfying report and animations of dual pistols, but IMHO, a Pulsewave Assault with decent [CditD] mods is superior.
You can find/contact me in game as @PatricianVetinari. Playing STO since Feb 2010.
Hmm... I don't ever expect to create a Klingon, but if I did, every battle would end with him swinging a Bat'leth. Even space battles.
I would say, if you want to build around exposing enemies, than use weapons that fit that category and/or, if they just seem fun to you and work, than stick with them if you like but, to get the most out of them and, really help the team.
It is best to work your build, into having the highest possible exposure % chance possible so, that yourself and your allies, can make good use of their exploit attacks often.

Maybe movie style phaser pistols.
Well, they do have dual phaser ones but, like all of the dual pistols they are only of the bolt firing flavor and, not beam weapons.

Sometimes when I use the secondary mode, it instead fires the primary. Then if I fire the primary, I get the secondary animation. Anybody else seeing this?
Maybe it's just the lower-level or store-bought disruptor pistols? The player's starting compression pistol still has the wrong model on it, looking like the black market stun pistol instead of the Klingon standard-issue long barrel.
I think it's just a display bug that happens when you run out of/have no targets, it stops the animation but resumes it the next time you attack. In my experience, at least when I was paying attention, the secondary animation has played consistently while its targets outlast it.
I used that tactics myself, it worked very well, especially when 2 BOFFS use them. There's always at least one enemy exposed. I have no idea why i don't use them anymore, lol.
Time to change that!
It almost always happens in shooter mode. It rarely happens in RPG mode, but that's harder to test since you cannot fire without a target. I logged a bug report (Dual Pistol Animation Bug) since nothing recent showed up in searches and this may be one of those boomerang bugs.

Sometimes going back to the basics works best. I Agree with the above.^^

Oh, I was a Tommy Gun or Kinetic Mini-gun now
That said, I'm trying to find out if these new Croniton Rifles are of any good. I put them on all my BOFFs and went again to Mission: House Pegh. Did not seem to improve my ground mission any.
I got mine and upgraded it to Mk 13. I thought it performed subpar to other spit beams. I think split beams are one of the best weapons in game because of being able to exploit three target. I am going to play so more with it and do further testing. The only reason I would ever use dual pistols is for RP, the animations while long are sort of cool.
They are very cool. The animations remind me of the time I created a Duel Pistol wielding Jedi for KotOR.
Beyond that, some other weapons have since taken over for near-continuous firing for straight DPS, namely the Borg Prosthetics and the Vaadwaur Minigun; both of which are near-continuous in firing vs regular Miniguns (with the Vaadwaur Minigun also having a cone-spray secondary).
Another little tidbit; the KDF Fleet Disruptor Pistols had (or still have) the KDF Fleet Disruptor Rifle skin on each of them, so holstering them has two hip-mounted Disruptor rifles, and drawing them makes KDF players look like they're dual-wielding rifles. I don't think they were ever changed.
