taylor1701d I am with you on the highway travel, let the car driving you, and you can finish getting ready for work. lol

I seen tons of people doing things while driving.

Funny you posted this, as I read this article this morning...

Self-Driving Cars Are Already Getting Into Accidents.

So definitely not ready for prime time. On CNET a while back, Brian Cooley stated and I agree with him that until all cars are "self-driving" or interconnected, accidents will still be a thing.
    Are we there yet?

That drives me bananas, also people tapping away at their cell phones or talking on the phone while driving. Grrrr

Until every single car is forced to be self-driving by a specific network, then this will never work. Computers can't deal with the chaos of human drivers.

Maybe Skynet is here already and is simply making it look like an accident? :P

The coolest tech bit I've seen was a car rigged so that you could drive it with an I-phone app. you could even do it from outside the car. But such technology has not been deemed to be safe enough for practical use.

The girlfriend's a manager at a hotel. People call all the time wondering why the hotel isn't located where Google Maps or their GPS directed them to go. It keeps sending them to an elementary school a few miles down the road. It's not a N/S thing with the same address - it's not an address where some numbers are mixed up...it's simply sending them to the wrong address listed as the right address in the wrong spot.

edit: And for some odd reason, I keep wanting to read that as coroner...something auto driving will definitely lead to, eh?

I read that article too, but then remembered how many accidents occur every day with people driving. :D
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Kind of makes me think about those various car commercials with all the alarms and so forth basically saying...

"We know you're not paying attention while driving..."

And people going oh, I need that! That's so me!

Which makes me very frightened to be on the road at times...

I wouldn't mind it. I can take a nap while going to work in the morning.

I wouldn't. News discussion regarding the Freightliner semi-truck version of auto pilot states that there's a strong possibility that the drivers will be liable for anything the autopilot does, not the manufacturer. I suspect that will apply to four-wheelers as well.

I figure the technology will be perfected in time for me to retire, and move to Florida.(14 years)
At least the parallel parking assist, has helped thousands of the "parking challenged" stop parking like schmucks.

and so we will become even more dependent on machines for our daily lives tbh i think we become more borg like with each passing generation.

If humans are anything like star trek then we are becoming borg like all the time.

Once the human equation is removed travel speeds will greatly increase, cars driving themselves will do so efficiently. I also heard rumor that once the technology is good enough insurance company's will back this and push it forwards. Everyone will still pay them but there will be very little in the way of accidents.

While this is all nice, imagine if a some malicious hacker was able to get in??

They already have in cars on the road today, so imagine if they got into a system controlling all cars on a section of interstate, or in a major metropolis during rush-hour.

    Scary stuff to be sure.

Well, the article I read suggested that in all cases, the blame was not on the car - other cars rear-ending and the like.

A more interesting "not-ready-for-prime-time" argument I read there as well - there are areas where the computer is too careful. For example, in China you may have people walking over the crossroad the entire time, and you have to "force" yourself on the car - you can generally rely on the people going out of the way. But the computers are for now not programmed to make that assumption, quite the contrary.

The same chaos as he could cause now?

There is already a lot computer-programmed in cars, and that is not going away - and that turns any security risks into safety risks (or hazards).

And not just cars - traffic lights are also generally computer controlled.

You don't need a self-driving car to cause chaos.

In the end, you have to weigh the risks - is it more likely that a truck driver falls asleep for a secnd on the wheel and causes a deadly crash, or that a hacker breaks into your traffic or car control systems and wreaks havoc?

I think in all cases, the truck driver is the more likely and more concerning scenario - it requires no malicious intent at all to happen, nor great technological skill.

In the end, we're never totally safe. You make it impossible for hijackers to enter the flight cabin, and you suddenly get a depressive co-pilot committing murder-suicide with no one being able to stop him...

IMO the manufacturer should only be liable if the autopilot is faulty.
