First of all, get rid of the turrets and replace them with beams of the same energy type, then replace your tactical console slots with consoles that boost your chosen energy type.

Pick one damage type, I see you have some phasers some tetryon and one I think plasma? Just use all one damage type.

Do not use turrets on a cruiser, instead use beam arrays and keep the enemy in your broadside where you shoot with all eight beams at once.

There are many missions that give beam arrays as a reward just rerun that mission a few times to get them for free.also different reputations give free weapon s (random types so not always beams) in the daily box so that is a great way to get free gear.

Bridge officer powers look to get fire at will, tactical team and attack pattern beta or delta for your three tactical powers.

Science powers go hazard team 1 and polarize hull (makes you immune to tractor beams).

Engineering powers make sure you have at least one emergency power to weapons and at least one directed energy modulation. Do not use boarding parties. At least one engineering team is helpful against many of the end game enemies.

For sets, the jem hadar set from the cardassian story arc is free and very nice. For damage, the most popular currently is nukara reputation deflector, nukara reputation shield and romulan reputation engines.

If you like phasers then the counter command set also works.
If you really want all three items from one set just to match try either the maco or adapted maco sets from omega reputation or go with the new iconian set.

What type of damage is your favorite and I can help you find good missions for free weapons?

OP, try using this skill planner for STO http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/

It will help you plan out builds and can also help in the decision making for what BOFF abilities to slot and how to spend skillpoints etc.

oh thanks i did not know this :O

Tried myself on a budget build using a lot of Episode/Replay rewards (see link in my signature) and two Reputation items only:

    http://skillplanner.stoacademy.com/?build=assaultbudget_0

The two remaining console slots are intended for the consoles from the current Featured Episodes.

Bound DOffs (especially VR Technicians) can be found after completing the B'Tran Cluster colonization chain and critting on the rare but repeatable 'Support Expansion Efforts' Mission afterwards.

Aux2Bat makes a pretty good starting point, the only problem is that it's ineffective without the right Duty Officers which can be tough to get at first. You can get them from B'Tran colonization, but that takes quite a bit of time.

I took a shot at my own starter version based on the current ship you're using.

I went with the starter build here.

Some notes on the setup and equipment:

The Beam Arrays can be found by replaying the mission Everything Old Is New. If you don't feel like playing the mission over and over, you can pick up some cheap Phaser Beams off the exchange. When you're starting out, you can easily get by with Green Rarity, just pick up some Green Phasers [CritD], they should be cheap.

The Omni Beam is the Borg Kinetic Cutting Beam which you can get from Omega Reputation. If you don't have access to this yet, you can replace it with another Beam Array. It gets a 2 piece bonus when paired with the Assimilated Module which is also in the build.

The Deflector, Impulse Engines and Shields are the Solane Hybrid Technologies Set which you can get for free from replaying the mission A Step Between Stars.

The Warp Core is the Obelisk Subspace Rift Warp Core which you can get free from the mission Sphere of Influence.

    Consoles:
The Neutronium Alloy you can get from the mission Reunion or you can just pick up a Green/Blue Mark XII off the exchange for cheap.

The Tetraburnium Hull Armor console is just for some added resistance, I find them rather useful in the beginning. You can pick up a Purple Mk XII off the exchange for practically nothing. Seriously, they're dirt cheap. Replace it once you get something better, it's just nice to start with as it grants you some extra survivability.

The Field Generator Consoles you can also get from the Exchange. You can usually find Blue/Green Rarity for cheap.

Phaser Relay Consoles I would again look on the Exchange. No need to break the bank, when starting out even Green ones would be just fine. If people are asking too much, try looking for Blue Mark XI's instead. They're not too expensive.

For Duty Officers I would slot 3 Damage Control Engineers. You probably already have a couple green ones just from leveling up an doing duty officer assignments. These will keep your Emergency Power to Weapons and Shields readily available. If you don't have any, again just start with Green ones from the exchange, Green ones are very inexpensive and will get you by until you can acquire purple rarity. I would also pick up one Warp Core Engineer of Green or better Rarity. You want the Subsystem Power variant, they will give your power levels a nice boost. For the 5th slot, use whatever fits your taste.

When flying this ship, keep all power to Weapons and use Broadside Technique. Keep the sides of your ship facing your enemy so all the beams can fire at once. I have filled out the Skill Points as well which you can see by clicking on that tab. Traits and stuff I will leave up to you.

This should be inexpensive to assemble and will easily get you by while you work toward top of the line gear. Let me know if you have any questions. Best of luck to you.

The first link is the ship build.

The other links tell you where to get the items in the build.

And the version I did post uses different (Beam) weapons (and a Torpedo) - and has a different idea behind the Bridge Officer (BOff) Abilities. The equipment both seaofsorrows and I propose comes mostly from Episode rewards and replaying missions - and that is why I gave You the link to the 'Free gear and where to get it' (shameless self-promotion) thread - where You can find which Episode rewards which piece of equipment. So You do not have to pay Zen or much eC to get a quite good ship - just play the game.
To explain what Aux2Bat means: the BOff ability 'Auxiliary to Battery' uses Aux(iliary)-power to help the three other power Levels. If You have three Technicians (2 very rare, 1 rare) from the mentioned B'tran-Cluster Colonization chain and the 'Support Expansion Efforts' Mission there afterwards (described in the 'Free gear'thread as well), all other BOff abilities will have their cooldown reduced and can be used more often. The disadvantage: Your Aux-Energylevel is almost always low and it is sometimes needed for other skills or highend Warpcores with [Amp] - and Aux2Bat does not provide that much energy or other bonuses, too. But is okay and You get what You need for free just by playing the game. You might also have to look at keybinds sometime to ease playing.

Both versions of the ship will work - and there are countless others that will do, too.

Absolutely awesome work, I'll start referring people to it when they need to find gear.

Looks like you put a lot of work into that.

@seaofsorrows: thank You, I hope it helps new or returning players a bit - though it does look like yet another wall of text on a glance. Not sure on how to improve on it yet but I will try to Keep it updated.

And I agree with ultimatenewbie, Your guide is a concise and very fine work - and one would not have to wait for the Aux2Bat Technicians.

Sounds about right - and do not forget that You will earn some eC along the way - which You can easily invest into some 'okay' weapons or consoles, for example. So You could buy Phaser or Antiproton Beam Arrays on the Exchange (uncommon and better will do, try to avoid the [Dam] modifier and get the Tactical consoles for that type of energy) - and You will not have to play the same Episode again and again if You do not want to.

Getting the neccessary Omega Reputation marks is actually easier than it sounds, especially if You do Normal STFs (I for one like doing Ground for that). Once You get the hang of it, You can go for Adv. - but read up on what to do exactly first.

Next step up would be getting the Assimilated Deflector and Engine - and a better Shield (MACO or Dyson, f.e. - Dyson marks are easy to get by doing the ground Battlezone within the Dyson Sphere).

You will also notice a lot of other equipment found in the different Reputation Systems - and every time You start a new project there, You have a chance of getting some nice gear, too. So You will be able to experiment with different Sets and layouts.

As I understand that Your character is not Lvl. 50 yet, You could try levelling him first by doing other episodes or Duty Officer assignments (like the B'tran cluster). Once You reach lvl. 55/60, You will get MK XII (and sometimes MK XIII) gear so it could be useful to be of a higher Level first before You try getting the equipment. Do not Forget that You can still skip Episodes You do not like - and use the <Esc> or <Spacebar> keys to skip the dialogue on replays.

After that - You are geared for almost anything, the rest is about learning how to use Your ship to the best, positioning, when to fire which ability and when not and all that.
