Ten Forward authors: severe character limits on new forums

I will be testing it this afternoon to determine exactly what the limits are, but it became very clear on an initial test last night that there are some very severe character-per-post limitations on the new forums. Unless someone like Trendy has the ability to advocate on our behalf and get those increased or eliminated, we may have to make some decisions about how to continue posting our works, whether it be through a lot of broken-up posts, or through off-site solutions.

I do not want to lose that part of this forum, so I really want to see us keep the stories alive for the benefit of any who wish to read them.

I'll have the exact character limits this afternoon and will update this thread at that time.

I also recommend backing up ALL works you have posted now, in case existing posts wind up truncated, corrupted, or deleted upon migration. If you value it, have a copy of it offsite.

    That's good advice in any event; even if the character limit is lifted, data could still be lost or corrupted during the transition.

    Fortunately, I write all my drivel up in Notepad, then paste it to the forums, so none of my deathless (or should that be "undead"?) tales will be lost to the ages.

    Hmm... sounds like a silly thing to do. Maximum character limits on message boards only encourage spamming. If anything, it should be a minimum character limit like what we have now.

    Through testing, the maximum character count is estimated between 9000 and 11000. The board doesn't actually TELL you what the upper limit is. In my case this was about 1800 words. This will be a very, very serious pinch on the fanfic authors in STO if not remedied--that's for sure.

    And the Flag Post feature is currently not working (though a Neverwinter CM at least became aware of the problem within the hour, and will be looking into it).

    Well, that sounds lovely, doesn't it. Reckon there's any chance they'll do something about it, or is that just going to be what everyone has to work with now?

    I'm not too concerned for myself. Like Jonsills, most of my stuff is already on Notepad anyway. That being said, I share everyone's concerns about what's going to happen to the forums once the move is made, and whether or not they'll be worth staying on.

    Have people with Twitter and Facebook been tweeting them regarding this problem? (Better to head it off at the pass than to have to try and make a workaround.)

    I wouldn't mind a "Fresh" restart on the STO forums... as long as I keep my posting record so far!!! :D but then again..... I would mind it... loosing so many reports/ loved threads....

    For right now we'll have to stand by and see if this information holds or not. It looks like the CM's of STO and Neverwinter, as well as one of the mods for PWI, are going through the new forums trying to deal with the craziness that's come up over the past few days. I am hoping maybe they address this QoL concern at the same time, but no way to be sure.

    UPDATE!

    Given the major vulnerabilities found in the forum, it appears LaughingTrendy has bought us some time, and the migration is now POSTPONED pending QA work.

    So for now, consider the information I gave you regarding character limits to be tentative. I will update forum authors with new findings whenever it looks like the migration's about to get green-lighted again.

    That's something of a relief given all the potential issues I heard of - particularly if a number of comments regarding poor coding and security vulnerabilities are true.

    Also, thank you for taking the time to check the character limit out and keep us all informed. It's very much appreciated (even if the result of your test was a little disappointing, and the conditions may now change substantially when the migration actually happens).
