I know we can't use most of the profanity, after all STO needs to be fairly clean.
However is it all right if we use "Damn" , "Hell" and "Son of a *****"? All this was used in Star Trek Episodes. "Son of a *****" was used in Enterprise.
Is this good as long as its not very common in dialogue?
Veteran of STO, had it for 5 years. Unfortunately, my Original account is gone.
there is a small box bottom left of the Foundry interface. Anything you add that is not allowed will display a 'dialogue contains profanity' warning.
Riker also used 'Bast**ds' in a movie but you still cant use it here.
Best to stick with 'Darn', 'Blast' and just 'You son of a-' rather than use anything a child shouldn't see.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them." -Thomas Marrone
Putting such language in a mission is just tasteless.
Why?
I agree that it doesn't have much place in Star Trek, but that's purely because I'm a stickler for canon, and we have actual reason to believe that profanity has been eliminated, per Star Trek IV ("The use of language has oldened since our arrival, it is currently laced with, shall we say, 'more colorful metaphors. 'Double dumb TRIBBLE on you' and so forth.")
Although, conversely, you could argue that it's made a comeback given it's use in the various 24th Century examples, as retro speech sometimes does.
My best guess is that the Universal Translator probably filters out most profanity as a matter of context, since it's probably sophisticated enough to use tone and inflection as part of it's decisions in translating words, and reserves actual cursing for only the most appropriate moments.
Which brings me to my point - there ARE appropriate moments for profanity. Adding profanity during those moments isn't "tasteless", it's an attempt to give more of a realistic feel to the right character at the right time.
As for "what children should see", in the 21st Century, you'd be hard pressed to find a child of ten who doesn't regularly use the kind of language that would make his 1955 counterpart blush with shock - certainly not one using the internet. Claiming child censorship at this point is a little naive. The profanity filter that blurs out the words in chat should have no problem doing the same for Foundry dialog, so, IMHO, it should be the same simple opt-in/opt-out process.
I do plan on adding 'Mild profanity' to my foundry mission, Dark Places, but only at appropriate moments. The worst there will ever be is "damn", "dammit", and "hell" But even then, it'll be rare.
