So far as I know devs don't read or reply in this sub forum. Sorry to disappoint you. The general forum or one of the feedback forums might work better.

However, if you like you can play a music file in the background while playing sto.

I usually have the game muted and am either listening to www.thecaperadio.com or am on Skype talking to friends.

    I . . . uh. . . what?

    "What if we could . . . "

Then it would be there? Are you asking if we could do that?

We don't have license for the music of Star Trek, so no, we can't. In addition, even if we did have the music, it seems weird to have the theme play when you enter the station? While we have music playing through much of the game, none of it is quite that on the nose. . .

Edit: And I will second Gavin's suggestion. Pull up the DS9 music on Youtube or wherever in the background when you load up DS9.

Is this why all of the music in the game is generic? Why doesn't Star Trek Online have license for the music of Star Trek? That's insane.

Music licenses are expensive. You are not just paying CBS to use the music. You are paying the person who wrote the score, the musicians who played it, etc. Gene added lyrics to the Star Trek theme song so he would get a royalty payment every time it was played - even though the words are not used. It is a crazy business. :)
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

I don't know specifics, but I believe that CBS doesn't hold the license for the music, the actual musicians/composers do?

There's more to it than that...

IP Rights, are subject to contracts. the way said contracts works is different in the US and the UK, but there are some points in common.

In the UK, you only get the rights specifically mentioned in the contract.
In the US you get all rights NOT specifically mentioned in the contract.

So contracts in the US tend to be very very clear on what exactly you are buying.

If the producers of a particular series, pay some muso to kinock out a theme tune, they have the right to play that tune when they air the show (and sent said muso a royalty payment every tie they do) and they may have bought the right to sell Music CD's with the soundtrack (again with a payment per cd for the artist).

They might not have remembered to buy the rights to use the music in a video game franchise, especially in the older series from before the dawn of computer games.

The other problem is that a copy of that music would be downloaded onto your hard drive when you install the game. A copy you might extract from the game files and share on some music download site, violating the rights of the person who currently holds the 'sell the soundtrack cd' rights.

Thats why the game doesnt have 'real star trek music'.

Because the music was originally licensed for use in whatever show/episode/movie it appeared. To extend those rights for DVDs, BluRay, streaming, or a game would require additional licensing that is often very costly.

This is one of the things that will often keep shows from being released on DVD. China Beach is one example -- the original show was full of songs from the late 60s/early 70s, and to get all the rights to release the show on DVD is prohibitively expensive. Sometimes to get around these costs they will strip the songs out of the show and then release it.

Of course any show from the past 15 years or so likely has DVD/BluRay distribution as part of the original music licensing deal, but that still wouldn't extend to games. Or streaming for that matter.

We do get a few snippets of well-known Trek themes in STO here and there, but I assume because they are very brief that it falls under fair use.

Well at least we have one song from the TV show. It might not be as awesome as having the DS9 theme when you approach the station, or the Voyager theme when you're in the DQ, but that song that plays in Colosseum makes me chuckle every time I play the mission :P

The Star Trek music is held by more then one composer. Rights are tricky.

I remember Dan, I think, saying it was hard for them to get the rights for the Amok Time/Arena music heard in Colosseum.

Since we are somewhat on the topic... I would love to have been able to experience one of these showings:

You should try and see if you can License the tracks Meco produced. Probably a lot cheaper than getting John Williams stuff.

Make STO the funkiest trek adaption.

John Williams is Star Wars, not Star Trek

And back hen DStahl posted they were working on a 'surprise' for that mission (IE The 'Amok Time arena combat music); he wasn't sure they'd be able to close the deal (they did); but from what was posted, the deal took weeks to close - just for that one piece of original 'Star Trek' music.

Which is probably how this happened.

There is nothing wrong with using WINAMP in the background while playing STO. So you can hear the music you want to while playing the game. I have done so for years. So I can hear the DS9 theme while being in and around that part of the map. WINAMP is a free download and works pretty well. I am sure someone reading this knows of something which works better or has more features, but my WINAMP isn't broken and I've never been all that fond of 'New and improved!' which usually is neither.

As to tuneage, the STO music is like most game music. Parts of it are okay. But most of it is annoying as all get out and all of the loops are far too short. So I listen to Bear McCreary while playing KDF and a mix of various artists on the rare occasions I now play Fed. McCreary's music for BSG has some themes and other things which are exactly perfect for the KDF. Here are some examples.

    Storming New Caprica

    Precipice

    Mandala in the Clouds

    Scar
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
