Cutscenes, why in battle?

darpinkdarpink Member Posts: 341 Arc User
Serious question in the title.

Who honestly thinks this is a good idea. Ok I know someone is going to reply now and say that they love it, so I'm going to call that BS right now.

Never have I heard anyone say anything positive about having a cutscene right in the middle of a fight/battle w/e. And I've been online gaming since the mid 1990's.

And the worst thing about it is that we are not "immune" during the cutscene. I was at 90% or more Hull before the cut, when I finally got out of the cutscene I was nearly dead at 19% Hull! If I had been in an Escort I would have likely been dead.

And I am referring to the new Iconian war Episodes. Although I know there are also cutscenes in some PVE missions....another bad idea. JMO

As the members of the Rabid Roleplay Reich might say...
... but...but... getting hails from fellow captains in the heat of battle is pure ST lore, it's so canon it hurts, so adding this in the game makes it more immersive... I love it...

I'm with you, total pain in the behind...

It's not that much the cutscenes being annoying, but sooner the impossibility to skip them when you want to. You'd think adding a skip function would be easy enough, though... That's what the Escape key is usually for, no?

    I guess not.

There's a cutscene after wave 2 of Borg Disconnected as well; I've never been a fan of cutscenes interrupting actual gameplay... :(
Expendables Fleet: Andrew - Bajoran Fed Engineer Ken'taura - Rom/Fed Scientist Gwyllim - Human Fed Delta Tac
Savik - Vulcan Fed Temporal Sci

You know what I hate? Warping in, seeing bunch of enemies NPC's fighting friendly NPC's - then get a dialogue prompt from whomever..

It's a pain in the TRIBBLE because I feel pressured at that moment to help out the people.. so I'm like "Shut up, I can see friendlies are in trouble, it's not the time for talking!"

Sure, nothing might be triggered if you actually just let the voice overs have their way, then help out.. but it just feels wrong somehow.

Cut scenes during battle is also a pain in the TRIBBLE though. It feels like it takes all control away from you.

Also, please allow ALL cutscenes (for those who played the missions 1000x already on plenty of alts) with the use of SPACE or ESC. Most are able to do so, but not all of them.. it's an odd thing.

In some cases, like disconnected. Its changing the map on you and using the cutscene to distract you from it.

In other cases. Its just down right obnoxious and painful. Especially if you were too close to the last enemy that you killed prior to its warpcore breach.

    That right there^

It's worse than the old days of being one shot killed by the Borg cube in Infected Conduit!
    Almost.

The only ones I don't mind are in nimbus in the bar. It's like a second minigame to see if my boffs and turrets canmkill the bad guys before the cutscene ends.

All them rest, totally need to be able to skip.

This are good and fun with drones, mines and turrets, indeed.
But the new iconian cutscenes? When I hit tactical team+attack pattern+BFAW and all enemy ships become immune for cutscene duration? Looks it is iconian techomagic.

It's even worse when the battle moves toward you and they start shooting at you, while the whoever keeps on babbling.

And yeah, I find those cutscenes in the middle of a battle annoying too.

cutscenes during gameplay is a console- thing and almost every PC game nowaday has it . Apparently devs think "if folks with a console like this stuff , so must PC players ". Or- in some cases - it's because the PC version of a game is a straight port from consoles ( this not the case with STO,obviously )

There's no good reason. The only one I can think of applies to group content, and it's so the newbie players have a chance to learn how the mission works and not get left behind by the team - and even this one is arguable.

Long cutscenes would be best before and after a mission, like briefs and debriefs. During a mission you could still have voiceovers, still have bite size text windows pop in from the corners like when Boffs mention their very minimal dialogue. Like this you still have control of your ship, and can actively participate in a fight.

All the cutscenes in this game are bad, anyway. I love that they have like two or three gestures they use over and over. :P

Being able to click away is nice, but I would rather that be Plan B - after all, sometimes they do deliver information we wouldn't know (on the first run).

Primarily, I think we wouldn't mind as much if our ships/characters were rendered immortal, or even just fully healed. Then we'd welcome the cutscenes - we finished one portion, and are restored for the next.

I don't mind a cut scene now and then. However, after the final battle on New Romulus,(Blood of Ancients) the cut scene forced me to watch myself be lead into the gateway building leaving all my boxes and loot behind. I would like to go about and clean up my loot first.

During "Delta Flight", (the space battle the cut scene) rather abruptly interrupts the game play. It did seem more like I was watching a video of someone else playing during the battle at times.

Had to quite literally fly through hoops to get through that one..

i dont recall lots of people asking for mid-battle cutscenes.
what i recall was a cryptic making cutscenes unskippable out of the blue, then expressing dismay when people openly told they they wanted to skip the 'content'.

People surmised that cut scenes added immersion, it was something cryptic could do.
The new features cryptic adds are most likely born from the forums. Cutscenes are no different.

I want cutscenes from other games in the middle of my battles, just to keep me on my toes, story-wise.

What's really awesome is how these cut scenes shut off recently deployed powers and pets before their cool downs, but we get to watch the same scene... again... for the millionth time... and the players love it!

for missions Im fine with them.

For STF's a freaking hate them, but Unless they can find a decent way to transition map resources seamlessly without pausing your gameplay with a cutscene I doubt anything will change. lol

And there are so damn many in the new missions. They break immersion, they nullify powers the player just activated and they add nothing to the story (mid combat).

Simple solution: This is the time to use your voice actors. I don't need them babbling on endlessly throughout the mission saying nothing important. Use them wisely. A simple Tom Paris "A dreadnought just warped in everyone concentrate your fire there." Is much better than a cut scene and Tom Paris saying "Good job", "More coming", "I miss the borg"... every 5 seconds.

Hrmm, for it to be more like the shows...we shouldn't have cutscenes...we should have commercial breaks! Things starting to get good? Time to show us some commercials for other Cryptic/PWE games...or...even just games offered through ARC, since it's not all Cryptic/PWE anymore.

Will our heroes take out the enemy...? First a word from our sponsors...

Don't give Geko more bad ideas about how to make money. If we have to watch a commercial for your the next set gear I'm going to kick you in the balls! :D

Could also just branch out into general advertising...

Hakeev: Did you know that Geico could save you 15% on your insurance in less than 15 minutes?
    Sela: Everybody knows that.
    Hakeev: But did you know...

    i agree with OP.

there is also the pop window with messages from your boffs or npc which are annoying.

most of the time, the messages are irrelevant or ridiculous.

your have in your objectives, "scan this or that"; the window appears and 1 of your boff tells you: "scan this or that"

    ridiculous message:

    - in a mission with tuvok (solanae sphere), the npc captain is killed and, tuvok says: i sense that we are not alone: really !!!

i spend my time to click F or esc to skip all this TRIBBLE
