Question about the Experimental Proton weapon

So I recently got the Ta'Sub Dyson science destroyer for my KDF main, being sick of not having a true Klingon science vessel. I'm planning on using the Protonic Arsenal set and protonic polaron weapons on it to try and get some extra punch out of that proton dual heavy cannon, but I have a question concerning the experimental proton weapon.

I know it can use of certain cannon and beam Boff abilities, but can it use subsystem targeting? I'm mainly asking because I like to run all cannons on my KDF ships, but I'd be willing to throw on a beam or two if necessary here to make use of those built-in abilities.

I've never tried myself but, but from what Fleet mates and the set bonus says, it only benefits from Fire at Will and Scatter Volley. It wouldnt hurt to try though, dont the Dyson ships have Subsystem targeting?

Can't speak to subsystem targeting but the weapon does also work with beam overload and cannon rapid fire.

I have not tried it but been told it does not work. Have you considered the kinetic cutting beam plus omega console? It is 360-degree, and will pump all your other weapons, and while it deals kinetic damage it works with all beam powers, including subsystem targeting.

I use that combo a lot, and I can safely say that this is not in fact the case. It even says in the cutting beam's description that it doesn't work with beam powers.

Well then I sit corrected. I thought it did.

I hate to say that it does not benefit from subsystem targeting. But it can utilize all cannon as well as beam specialized attacks.

Additionally, I believe it does not benefit from the beam overload penetration DOFF either.

Honestly, if your going to run a protonic poloran build, just go ahead and use the experimental protonic weapon. It adds synergy to your protonic weapons quite nicely and the protonic proc works well with your exotic damage.

For my Dyson i just put an Omni beam of the flavor for the main type the ship uses, the cutting beam and then either a turret, the proton weapon or some mines in the 3rd rear slot.

    Works very well.

Yeah, still planning on doing that, I just wanted to know if I could run an all-cannon build for the rest or if I needed to slap on a beam in order to make use of subsystem targeting.

Thanks for the help everyone, I now know that option B is the way to go. :)

If using the proton weapon get the set with the grav torp and console. Slot a TS2/3 and grav well and things will not be alive long.

Using sci ships combo of grav well/TS2/3 grav torp is the huge bonus to that set. The proton gun is decent mostly because there are no resistances to it. I run it on the back of my kazon raider with 2 photons up front. The ship is LOW end, but its spike and AOE can clear a map.

If using the proton weapons do not use the consoles to make proton better as they are underpowered, use the proton polaron Heavy cannons if you can to max your proton damage but they are not the best weapons unless you crit often. If they do they can eat through a lot of hull.

Subsystem targeting does not work with it. You will need a beam to use it. An omni on the back would be best for that.
