I want to try the R&D but it seems very confusing to me. I get that equipment has a cost (sub components) and Catalyst, but then the subcomponents also need catalysts?? How do I know what quality of catalyst to use? I don't want to waste my very rare catalysts on a mk2 that doesn't seem to make any sense. And where do I even get more Catalysts? Is there a matrix or spread sheet that shows what catalysts gives what quality subcomponents and equipment?
I'm in the same boat, all of the R&D guides look really well done but are WAY too advanced for me at this point. I can't even begin a project. I click through the R&D menu to start a project but the 'start' button is always grayed out. There are 'no duty officers or items available for this slot' on any project that I've looked at under the 'duty officer' portion. I followed all the steps in the tutorial, but there just aren't any duty officers available even for the tutorial 'ground weapons' project. I thought maybe if I assigned them to 'active duty' it would help but it makes no difference. Am I missing a step or something?
I could come up with a long explanatory post about all the In's & Out's of R&D, Crafting. Then I realized how long it would take. Then I next realized that one acronymn encapsulates R&D, Crafting.

I'm still new here also, so I can understand your frustration on this.
Maybe a question for you, but you are at least level 15?
When you hit level 15 you receive a bundle of crafting DOFFs to do these. But be warned they can be used on normal DOFF missions (iirc). You can (I think) also replicate these using the replicator on your inventory window.
Each crafting mission seems to require at least one crafting DOFF and materials. What materials and other crafting items you posses are found in the crafting tab of your inventory.
So to start, click on beams (for example) and you will be faced with a long list of craftable objects, a lot of the final items such as beam arrays and beam banks will require sub components that you can also craft.
When you click on an item, lets say an EPS module, you are taken to another screen. The first thing you need to do is to use the drop down menu to select the mark of the item - II,III,IV etc (select II to begin with). You should also see below this that a DOFF (Under required Duty Officer) will be autosassigned if you have one available - if its blank, hover over the box with your mouse or click on it, and it should tell you what sort of DOFF you are missing. Below that you will see what mats/sub assemblies are needed. If they are red, you don't have. If its a crafted item, you can click on the icon for it and it will take you to the crafting screen for that item. As other have wrote, dont bother with catalysts etc (displayed on the Right Hand Side), just click the start button.... You can then either wait the required time, or speed up with Dil. If you crit whilst crafting you will either craft more of the sub assembly or upgrade items, or increase the rarity of the item - i.e. blue or purple beam banks.
General rule is that you start with one crafting school and run the 20hour mission every day until you unlock your second crafting slot, pick another school and concentrate on that until you unlock the third etc.
This may not be 100% correct as I'm doing this from my memory... but it should hopefully point you in the right direction.
