step 1. ask my orion crew members if they need shore leave.
step 2a. if yes, beam them down to the planet tell them I'll be back in a month and wish to rule the planet. the may take any time during this month they don't need to take over the planet off.
step 2b. if no, I will inform them they have a mission to seduce the world leaders into joining the kdf and that I'll return in a week.
step 3. return to the kdf's newest planet and declare myself governor.
if they fail, glass the planet.
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.
Am I simply raiding the planet for something, Like a mineral rescource of high value, Or is this a take and hold scenario in which I plan to stay ?
In the case of a raid its rather simple, I will disable any orbital stations, Vessels and defense platforms and proceed to my primary objective , take what I cam for and leave
A take and hold scenario would be extensive, and difficult, Ultimately costing me more than I am willing to sacrifice. Simply put, I lack the Dedicated Ground troops needed to subjugate an entire population.
My ship is not equipped to wage a ground war, I don't bring Transports, Armored Vehicles or Atmospheric craft needed to wage a war.
I might be able to capture Bases, take and replicate some of the things I need ( assuming I can gather the needed energy for such mass replication) But the attrition is likely going to be too great to handle

the lance is basically a siege weapon so i would just warp in under cloak and observe there system finding where the main cities are located or ones with military bases and lance one warp out rinse and repeat until there central government was in disarray then issue my surrender demand
the lance is basically a siege weapon so i would just warp in under cloak and observe there system finding where the main cities are located or ones with military bases and lance one warp out rinse and repeat until there central government was in disarray then issue my surrender demand
Don't forget that A: any ship by 25th cent standards can take a nuke. We'd have some kinetic damamge and radiation to contend with but when a people throw their biggest rock at you and it fails to knock you over, that speaks volumes; and,
B: we can remotely deactivate the triggering mechanisms from our ship, essentually neutering their primary defence. Or, as I would, remotely detonate them when they are still in their prefiring chambers.
Alternately, I could EMP the place and then cover the whole planet in holo-emitters, your home is now a prison and the world a reeducation camp. Hope you like being a cult member because that's the only way out that leaves you with a pulse.
Warp in, disable or destroy defense fleet first. Then, board and occupy the shipyard. Deploy runabouts to patrol orbit with orders to tractor any ship attempting to flee. Deploy heavy turrets around the shipyard, use it as base for the occupation. My ship then goes about taking all orbital communication satellites offline, enforcing a planet-wide communications blackout.
At this point, contact the planetary government and ask for their surrender. If they have any surface forces capable of launching to pose a threat to me in orbit, I blow them up before they can launch. If there is no surrender, begin laying an orbital minefield of Nukara web mines. When minefield is complete, replace Runabout patrols with heavy turret emplacements.
If there is still no surrender, swap runabouts for Elite Catian Stalkers. Deploy Stalkers into atmosphere to perform hit-and-run strikes against military installations, no more than one attack per day.
The ultimate goal is to maintain dominance in orbit, not engaging their ground-based military forces unless absolutely necessary. Nothing gets out of atmo without being disabled or destroyed. Minimal civilian casualties, and minimal damage to industrial resources that would be of use to me after the planet surrenders.
just a small discussion i had with a fellow in chat, and i found it so interesting i decided to make a thread about it, since hearing how other people would go about it would make for interesting reading material
keep in mind all the "federation does not invade" is irrelevant here
ok so here goes: the scenario
you are going to invade a small planet, on your own your resources
your ship ONLY! no fleet support (carrier pets counts as your ship so you can bring them too) the opposition
a single shipyard. defencive fleet of 10 ships of different classes. a population of 10 million people on the planet (atleast 1 million of which are soldiers stationed around the planet) your objective
takeover. either force the government to surrender, or fight the population until they cannot fight you anymore.
so here's what i'd do: i'd bring my Dominion dreadnought, outfit it with a skeleton crew of 500, leaving room for 3.000 troops for invading the planet. i'd go in and use the dreadnoughts overwhelming firepower and the four attack ships i have in my hanger to obliterate the enemy fleet and the shipyard, then i'd orbital bombard any major military installations/air fields/ artillery installations, and anything i can't bombard, i'd send my troops to take out, then i'd lay siege to the capital and wait for the government to surrender on their own.
now the real question: what would you do?
I fly cloaked with my dhelan warbird and land on surface...
i activate my photonic-costume device to mimic their highest rank people...
while i do that i use my neural-manipulator-nanites to AoE infect everyone around me to make them join me...
i go walk into their base and replace their leader and all other personnel with my photonic crew...
then make the changes within the government while my nanites do their job and infect the entire plant...
Since the Op didn't say. ill assume they are not a warp capable planet or else Starfleet would be Brown Nosing them and make a take over diffacult.
so just go in cloaked and start beaming out sections of their ships hull. decompression of the ships kills the crews, ship yard pretty much same unless they have decent cargo vessels or repair yards capable of refit. in which case we jam comms and take the ship yard. now with all ships destroyed once shipyard is cleared out we move on the planet that is now wondering what the heck is going on.
we could just star beaming out political leaders but my warriors want to see some blood on their blades so we beam in teams to kill the leaders of any and or all of the planets governmental offices one at a time since my B'rel only has a crew of 30. all while the ship is cloaked and hovering above the target watching for any reinforcements that may try and approach. and take care of them with the ships weaponry.
now that that is done. i'm guessing we only wanted the resources since that's typical for Klingons.
Since we have already demonstrated our might via the government we now contact the labor leaders of the planet. tell them they are next unless they start paying tribute. and we will leave a force to monitor their progress (but not tell them the new base is their Shipyard) and as long as tribute is paid we will not send enforcement troops to collect.
Dispatch or leave a Fighter for the observation crew. set up a transporter on the shipyard mount a few turrets maybe a Torpedoe launcher and add the location to a freighters shipping list for pickup.
but it seems while many do pay as directed some do not. I have to send DUTY OFFICERS on tribute enforcement mission almost daily.
Trophies for killing FEDS ahh those were the days.
2 solution :.
-beam down Tovan khev/Slamek/Kurland (pick one, nobody deserve the 3 of them), and ask for surrender. It's too bright here ! Kurland here !
Step 1 Destroy all orbital forces
Step 2 Observe their medical technology
Step 3 Create a slow acting virus that is not treatable by their medicine
Step 3a Develop a cure
Step 4 Unleash the virus and pose it as an epidemic
Step 5 contact the leaders and tell them that if they surrender you will give them the cure
Easy, starve them of supplies by disrupting their supply chains until they yield.
Drop warp drive destabilizers, in a large berth around their system to knock any supply ships out of warp.
Communications scramblers along side the warp drive destabilizers. To silence the enemy.
Capture and impound the supply ships entering the destabilizing field.
Lay a mine field, turrets and assimilators surrounding the planets orbit to deal with the 10 ships.
You might be able to force them to surrender (by bombardment) but with only 3000 troups there's no way you could keep the planet under your control.
What would you do after capitulation? You would have to deploy troups all over the planet to take control over the administration and act as a police force. But a planet, even a small one, is much bigger than you think. Your troups would be spread so thin that they would be incredibly vulnerable to an attack. And since all the planet's weapons didn't just disappear they would soon drive your troups off the planet again.
The question then is: why conquering a planet if you have no way to keep it?
Well for starters. I would believe my Commanding Officers would be wiser to send more then one ship to secure a planet. Especially one with 10 times as many starships defending it as we are sending.
What should happen is a 3 to 1 ratio. 30 of OUR starships should warp in and quickly handle the 10 ships in orbit. This gives us the ability to easily defeat the defenders and counter any counter-attack waiting for us. Numbers matter when it comes to war just as much as technology and training. The American Civil War should of taught you this.
Once the Orbital Defenses (Starships and Defense Platforms) are disposed of. I would eliminate any low orbit defense platforms (its very likely a planet worried about intergalatic invaders would forsee some of the invaders infiltrating their planets atmosphere so youd see both High Orbit and Low Orbit defenses) in case I felt the need to deploy anyone to the ground, though this is highly unlikely.
From here I would begin to target their infrastructure with planetary bombardment. Communications Hubs, Power Distribution Centers, Emergency Response Centers and so forth. I would want to cause as much panic and chaos for the military, the civilians and government as possible. This would overwhelm the leadership and prevent them from mounting a sufficient response.
When I was sure the bombardment had been successful I would begin to target Military Installations and dug in positions they may have taken up. Effectively eliminating any sort of threat on the ground.
I would then contact the civilian leadership on the planet or whomever was in charge and demand a swift and immediate surrender. And considering that a Galaxy Starship alone was considered enough to slag a planet. 30 Starships with torpedoes, cannons, dual beam banks and arrays would be more then overkill. I seriously doubt anyone in their right minds would refuse to surrender. And if they did I would begin to selectively destroy government buildings and locations until I came across someone intelligent enough to see things my way.
I would honestly have no need to put any sort of boots on the ground. I would fully expect the government that was surrendering to get their own people under heel if there was anything on the planet my superiors were in need of. And even if I had to put people on the ground they would have atleast one Starship targeting their position in case the locals got restless. Simply beaming my people out before slagging the location to make an example of them.
If the Planet itself was of no real use to us and only the planets location on the intergalactic level of things. That would make things even far more easier for me and my Fleet. After eliminating the locals ability to reach out and harm us. We'd build ourselves the Starbases, Research Facilities and Drydocks that we needed and intended to build there and leave a few starships in orbit to remind the locals not to test us.
I think the biggest flaw in your scenario is the 10 on 1 odds. I think you take the video game too seriously. Our characters in game are invincible and so face odds that in all reality we wouldnt be able to face let alone succeed against. If my Commanding Officers were to order me to take my sole ship against 10 other ships to secure a planet Id tell them to 'Go to ****'.
Stage I: Observation. Get to know the people in power, their opposition, where the military has bases, where the people come the most et cetera. All done from a cloaked Warbird.
Stage II: Infiltration. Surgically alter some hand-picked officers to look just like the dominant species on the planet.
Stage III: Unrest. Use infiltrators for terrorist attacks, make sure opposition and government blame each other.
Stage IV: Arm opposition.
Stage V: Await civil war, keep supporting whoever is loosing.
Stage VI: Have infiltrators sabotage shipyard.
Stage VII: Decloak and destroy orbital defenses (what is left of them at the time).
Stage VIII: Demand whatever is left of armed forces to surrender, begin orbital bombardments on individuals resisting and beaming up soldiers to spots 200 meters above planet surface.
Stage IX: Bombard cities in case they have not surrendered yet.
Stage X: Crown myself Emperor of Rahmopia Planitia.
This would require years of effort. A lot more than I think you realize it would take.
First, I'd insert my ship into a concealed orbit and spend half a year monitoring the various commercial E/M broadcasts. Next, I use my ship's computers to access the planet's Internet. Once I had a feel for what the planet's populace liked and wanted more of, I'd make myself and my crew known to a select few members of the planet's entertainment community. Who would be sworn to secrecy about my ship and crew. Probably have to off one or two to demonstrate to the rest how serious I was about the secrecy part.
We would then take over the minds of the people by ruthlessly manipulating the popular media and culture. All of this would lead to a crisis deliberately fostered and manufactured by my cabal. A crisis which only myself and my crew could save the planet from. At the choicest possible moment, when the crisis was at its height and the survival of the race appeared to be at stake, I would reveal myself and my crew. We would offer to solve the crisis. For a price.
After the takeover, all members of the cabal among the populace would be ruthlessly and publicly purged. After all, they've already proven they cannot be trusted. Blaming them as the cause of the crisis would be bonus. Grateful for someone to blame for the current state they find themselves in, the populace would never turn on my crew. To ensure this we would continue to manipulate the pop culture and the media to always portray us as the liberators we are. Needs to be lots of bread and circuses as well.
And Bob's your Uncle.
A man after my own heart
Of course, if I just wanted the planets resources and to heck with the populace...
1. find a region on the planet where magma is close to the surface (say a large supervolcano)
2. find a mud pot/geyser nearby
3. launch in slow succession two or three bunker buster equipped photon torpedos
4. Watch newly erupted supervolcano spew billons/trillions of gallons of lava into the air; sending the planet into a minor ice age - particlate matter in turn interfering with any kind of travel (even transporters due to signal diffusion) - combined with the lack of sunlight, extreme cold and the lack of food (assuming they have stopped using hydroponics), a colony would soon fail
5. Eventually offer help... at a cost of precious (but not as precious as heat/light/food) resources to mine/gather
Note: I proposed this way of killing in a 'how many nukes would it take to kill humanity' thread on /k/ so if it sounds similar, thats why
0. Destroy all space based defences, like stations and ships.
1. Destroy all satellites and deep-sea telekom lines to disrupt planetary communication.
2. Destroy all planetary defences that could offend my space based forces.
3. Destroy all airforce bases.
4. Destroy all military bases.
5. Destroy the power grid.
6. Destroy transport infrastructure.
(0 to 6 are done all from orbit).
7. Deploy ground troops directly to major population centres, capitals, and backup locations for planetary governments.
8. Deploy localised dampening fields to disable enemy energy weapons.
9. Establish an orbital surveillance/sensor satellite network.
10. Mop up the rest. Locate and destroy pockets of resistance.
just a small discussion i had with a fellow in chat, and i found it so interesting i decided to make a thread about it, since hearing how other people would go about it would make for interesting reading material

Warp in and hail a greeting.
Fend off the pirates that had been suddenly plaguing them for them.
