There is gonna be a bit of math in this post, its hard to find a price without. But the math should be easy to understand.
I apologize for the questionably English.
My assumptions:
Rarity upgrade cost in techpoints for a space weapon mk XIV is: 216.000 Techpoints
A superior tech upgrade cost(2,5% chance): 300.000 EC
Superior gives 12.800 Techpoints, so we need ~17 to get chance to upgrade. (216.000/12.800=16,9)
A experimental tech upgrade cost(5% chance): 800.000 EC
Same as superior, so 17 is needed.
A Omega upgrade cost(10% chance): 3 * 1.000.000 EC = 3.000.000 EC
Omega gives 25.600 Techpoints, so we need ~8 to get chance to upgrade. (216.000/25.600=8,4)
We asume we are as lucky as everyone else, so when we hit a 50/50 chance for upgrade we hit on average.
1) Superior upgrade:
2,5% to get a upgrade, allso known as 97,5% to dont. Upgrade points carry over, so the second time we have 95% chance to miss upgrade.
0,975 * 0,95 * 0,925 * 0,90 * 0,875 * 0,85 * 0,825 = 0,4731
This means after 7 tries to go EPIC, we have have 47,31% chance to not have gotten a upgrade.
Or 52,69% to have upgraded to EPIC.
7 tries * 17 superior upgrades * 300.000 EC = 35.700.000 EC
7 tries * 17 superior upgrades * 1.075 Dil = 127.925 Dil
2) Experimental upgrade
5% to get a upgrade.
0,95 * 0,90 * 0,85 * 0,80 * 0,75 = 0,4361
This means after 5 tries to go EPIC, we have have 43,61% chance to not have gotten a upgrade.
Or 56,39% to have upgraded to EPIC.
5 tries * 17 experimental upgrades * 800.000 EC = 68.000.000 EC
5 tries * 17 experimental upgrades * 1.075 Dil = 91.375 Dil
3) Omega upgrade
10% to get a upgrade.
0,90 * 0,80 * 0,70 = 0,504
49,6% chance to have upgraded to EPIC.
3 tries * 8 omega upgrades * 3.000.000 EC = 72.000.000 EC
Lets say omega fragment cost 1.500.000 EC = 4.500.000 EC for an Omega Upgrade
3 tries * 8 omega upgrades * 4.500.000 EC = 108.000.000 EC
I think we can agree this is a lot of Dil and EC, soo make absolutely sure you understand the cost before starting.
A bit of bonus info:
To upgrade a Mk VII EPIC space weapon to Mk XIV cost 420.000 Techpoints -> ~33 superior upgrades -> 9.900.000 EC & 35.475 Dil
This is the reason why many soo many buy "low" mk crafted space weapon of higher rarity instead of buying high mk weapons.
So if you can buy your weapon in EPIC quality for less than 25.000.000 EC at mk V-IX, do soo and save youself alot of Dil.
You won't get a [CrtD]x4 weapon for 25.000.000 EC, but a [ACC] [CrtD]x3 or [CrtD]x3 [CrtH] should be easy enough.
I don't know the chance for Tech upgrades to crit, but i would probably subtract 10% of the above expected prices.
Sadly this isn't really an option for all the other items on the ship, since we mostly use Reputation and Fleet items for engine, deflector, shield and consoles that only come in mk. X-XII. And you don't have the option to buy these items in EPIC quality.
when we hit a 50/50 chance for upgrade we hit on average.
But why you do that? Knowing the probabilities of failure for each attempt, you can easily calculate expected number of tries:
- with 2% chance, expected number of tries is 8.543
- with 2.5% chance, expected number of tries is 7.609
- with 5% chance, expected number of tries is 5.294
- with 10% chance, expected number of tries is 3.660.
These numbers are of course close to yours, but still somewhat larger.
Epics from Mk II's, using a process of an experimental superior upgrade + a research boost is your best chance to acquire an epic result.
Or an Omega Upgrade + Major Research Boost (2x quality) will give a Very Rare a 40% chance at rarity upgrade. Then it only down grades to 20% if it kicks over to Ultra Rare for the remainder of the Tech Points...

I have upgraded 7 alts, with a full set for each. They've averaged 2 epics each and a handful of Ultra Rare. I started from vr and ur.
Epics from Mk II's, using a process of an experimental superior upgrade + a research catalyst is your best chance to acquire an epic result.
In truth you'll be looking at making 5-6 thousand mk II's to get the types of 'perfect' arrangements of procs. It's a long process. Have fun with it.
