With the general forward motion in gear I have found that some of my older characters are left with items that were once top of the line and are now obsolete.
And it made me think, why is it that my only option with this stuff is to vendor it off or, in the best case keep it for possible alts.( I'm talking about pre DR non fleet or rep gear)
I mean some of it may be worth trying to upgrade but most of it isn't.
Then I thought, how cool would it be if I could plug an item into an t&d project and attempt to turn it into some of its base components?
Maybe that should be an option, if I have the doffs and the proper level in the proper school, I can try and turn some of my bound or otherwise un wanted gear into the appropriate crafting materials.
Probably not at 100% return, but something.
Thoughts?

When the R&D system first came out I was vocal in my surprise that this had not already been incorporated. Even if you can't break an item down to get a specific modifier being able to break it down into some components just makes sense. Every other game with crafting in (that I have played) has this option, I'm simply stunned the devs in charge of this part of the game didn't include it. Almost made me think that they don't play games at all... but that can't be true, can it?

Considering that even in the STO story arc (following the Arena), our captains have to salvage components on the fly in real time in order to call their ships for an evac, it stands to reason that one or more components could be salvaged from obsolete tech. Just scan the current crafting components list: isolinear chips, IFF beacons, focusing lenses, etc. should all be candidates for use in a new R&D build, depending on what is being recycled...

Not at launch, but it is something that I hope to add later. I've set up all the items you create to "know" what it took to make them, so that in the future we can hopefully look that up and give you some of the materials back.
A fine idea, but since Hawk has made that statement, he has since left Cryptic...and the general pattern in the past is, "If a dev leaves while working on something, it tends to not be put into the game, or at least delayed a long time."
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.
Its already there for years now. Just you get a joke of EC instead components
I realize that you're saying this in jest, but this would've been my exact response.
Energy Credits essentially function as the gameplay abstraction of the base element/energy stores consumed by the replicator technology that drives the Trek universe. I thought that was pretty clear from the fact that you can "sell" items for EC by opening your Replicator and going to a tab called Recycle.

True, but that is also a mechanic that was established in a game where there was no crafting.
As it is now it makes verry little sense. Now that craft in an item consumes components instead of particles it makes more sense to break down an item into its components first, and not go directly to converting it into a tiny amount of energy.
I mean look at the inefficiency of that process, what it costs to make that item vs what you get back.

I can understand if the dilithium used is lost (Cryptic has to keep the sinks), but recovering some of the components would be a huge boon to R&D.
Especially with the absolutely TRIBBLE-tastic methodology for determining mods.

I support this.
it would be nice.
They did lay some groundwork for this in the crafting revamp 5 months ago:
