Upgrading Spiral Wave

I have 6 Spiral Wave Disruptors and was thinking about upgrading them. I was told they can be turned into Epic Quality as well.

Since I'm still trying to grasp this whole upgrade system, as I only got back into the game last week.... Can someone explain when, where, which, and why I should apply certain upgrades?

If I applied an Omega Tech and then a Rare TP boost, it would only take a couple to reach XIII. Although the way I understand it is, I should apply an Omega TP and a Rare RP boost, which would require at least 4 Omega TP to level, but give me the best shot at a Quality increase.

Should I apply an Omega and a 2x, then another Omega or two and some RP boosts? Omega and RP 4 times? Perhaps I'm just over-thinking here.

I'd like the best chance to get it upgraded to Ultra from Very, at least. Epic would be awesome, but what are the odds, let alone 6 times.

I'm guessing this advice would also apply to my other VR Mk XII things also. I'm currently flying my Galor as Beams seems crazy now, but I use Fleet level Dual Heavy Cannons on most everything else.

I appreciate any information you guys pass my way.

Thanks!

I promise you. You WILL dump hundreds of tech upgrades, and the thing still will refuse to upgrade to Epic. Do yourself a favour, and don't bother. It is nothing but a dilithium dump.

Yes they are, but they won't be around forever, and you still might have to dump in bunches and bunches of them, yet the item simply will not upgrade.

If you want to upgrade your gear, focus on using superior upgrades (yes, ones that do cost dil) and go for getting them to Mk XIV first. The reason being is that each time you go up a mark level, the chance to gain rarity resets. So any chance you have that doesn't get used, is simply lost when the mark goes up.

Once they are XIV though, chance quality continues to go up without end until you finally get a successful upgrade to the next rarity. But as Lindaleff said, it can be a high chance, and yet the item will not go up, forcing you to wait and put in even MORE upgrades to have another chance at upgrading to a new rarity.

And that's just trying to do that with 1, let alone 6, or any other gear you might have.

That said, consoles are relatively cheap to upgrade to XIV, at least compared to weapons and other gear.

So you're saying to upgrade them all to XIV, then try to get them to Epic because that bonus carries over?

    Sorry if I misunderstood.

Take a read through the Everything you need to know thread. Take a good look at Post #4 as it explains how the rarity process works. You might also want to look at the fixed modifiers table, your Spiral Wave Disruptors all get [CritX] at Ultra Rare.

As you mentioned, the crit chance rolls over once you reach Mk XIV. That would be the best time to use higher crit chance items like the Omega Upgrades or the Experimental Upgrades (possibly with RP boosters. It is less expensive (dilithium costs) to use Superior Upgrades to take your SWDs to Mk XIV first. They will see a fair increase in damage output at MkXIV, so you should probably do that first. Then you can spend the time to gather the resources to try to take them to Ultra Rare or Epic.

I am in the same boat (6 SWD) and can absolutely tell you to get them to MkXIV first. The damage output difference from stock values are pretty amazing (imo). Dare I say the drive to UR or Epic may actually slow down for you once you see them in action at VR XIV.

Don't get me wrong, [CritX] is uber considering the rest of what the weapon has, but I would not bust nutz to get to UR or Epic for SWD.

    In my humble opinion.

Yes, that's correct. Don't worry about rarity going to XIV, just get everything bumped up to it first. Once you are there, then you can spend the resources to try and get rarity upgrades if you want.

As a side thing, bump up your consoles as well to XIV. Consoles, on the whole, are VERY cheap to upgrade. That is to say, they don't take very many upgrade thingies to bump up. Fleet consoles are a good choice to do so, being Mk XII ultra-rares right out of the starting gate, so it's little work to bump up to XIV and already be at ultra-rare. On a similar note, the unique consoles from Science and Engineering R&D are also good choices, and start at Mk XII very rare, or ultra rare.
