AFK Weekend... err shuttle weekend...

"All shuttle queues have increased rewards this weekend! Check the PvE queues to join a small craft mission."

Done and done. Boosted mark rewards plus a change of pace equals a welcome diversion. Or so you'd think. Here's my experience so far:

- queue into Atmosphere Assault ~15 times on various characters.
- only 2/15 teams consisted of 5 active players
- 13/15 teams consisted of at least one player idle for the majority of the instance
- most of the idle players simply cloaked at the spawn area, remained motionless, and ran a set rotation of abilities periodically, as if running off of a timed script
- 5/15 teams consisted of two players idle for the majority of the instance; in this situation, I always left the team before it could worsen

- queue into Federation Fleet Alert (Shuttle) ~10 times
- every single team consisted of at least one player who would remain dead or far outside of combat for the majority of the instance; several times it was just myself and one other person with 3 corpses for the duration of the match
- these instances seem to have no more than a third of the players actively participating at any given time; the rest simply aren't there

Currently debating as to whether or not to ignore the rest of the event in its entirety, as unpaid babysitting is not a fun event AFAIAC.

AFK farming MMO players aren't exactly a new phenomenon, as anyone who spends time on Nimbus or the Dyson ground battlezone can tell you. But this is definitely the largest impact they have had on my own personal gameplay experience with STO. Nearly every attempt to enjoy this event has resulted in the nagging sensation of pulling someone else's plow.

If you were keeping tabs on the other players' positions and activities the whole time instead of fighting, its someone else who did the plow-pulling.

If you are personally unable to do two things at once, you're ascribing that failing to others without justification.

Shuttles suck, so does the content. It was designed to artificially create a need for shuttles. Shuttles instead should have been a unique mechanic that enhances a mission, maybe as a support craft. The starships always get used for the mission first. Shuttles do something in the background or maybe run around a map looking for craftsble stuff.

I don't mind small craft, I rather enjoy seeing the inventive ways people have come up with to use rep, fleet and lock box gear to overcome the hurdles imposed by a shuttle/fighter's limited layout possibilities. They do feel a bit tacked-on in some regards, and that gets reflected in how poorly-equipped many players' small craft are (like the dreaded Type-8 white gear shuttles).

What's more immediately disparaging in this situation is that the devs have taken the time to organize and incentivize a small craft weekend event, and mark farmers have figured out how to turn the whole thing into one big chore for anyone else partaking of it.

I will say that the optional timers in Atmosphere Assault are obnoxious (travel time between walkers isn't factored in), and Storming the Spire (shuttle) is neither fun nor productive in a heavily disorganized team. Both could benefit from some tweaking, to be sure.

The Shuttle AFK thing is out of hand. I don't think they have the AFK function active on that queue, or perhaps the duration is too short for AFKers to register.

Thx for info OP. Glad I avoided the event this time for the most part. I was down to 2 or 3 runs compared to 20-30 the last time.

If cryptic wishes to attach some meaning to the word “event” again I suggest they don’t use it for every boring, not motivating and under rewarding pice of contend they throw at us.

Edit: shuttle event is a cool thing for new toons. (not much gear needed and easy selectable mark rewards). Oh well I don’t have any new toons and highly doubt I ever make new ones in this game again.

I did not even bother with the event.

    I dislike flying shuttles.

I relented in my hesitation and gave the queues a few more tries throughout the weekend, mostly attempting to coincide with German prime time (6H ahead of my native time) as opposed to off-hours or nighttime sessions. At those times, the incidences of AFK and sluggish heel-dragging were drastically reduced and I was able to score enough optionals / clear times for the event to feel rewarding again. I wasn't able to get on during North American prime time hours, so my info on those brackets is limited to what others have told me - ie. "still lots of AFK".

One of the more amusing player responses to being called out for idling in queued events is being told "you should be doing enough DPS to cover my share". What, is this Star Trek: Philanthropy now? Am I supposed to paypal you some funds for your netflix subscription, too?
The Shuttle AFK thing is out of hand. I don't think they have the AFK function active on that queue, or perhaps the duration is too short for AFKers to register.

With so many players posting an absolute 0 dps, I'd have to concur with that assessment(!)
