So I saved and saved and saved and finally 6 months ago I bought my Tac Odyssey Cruiser, 6 months later, it's now outdated. So I saved some more and wanted to get a new ship but not quite sure which one to get.
Do I save up to 3000 Zen and get the guardian cruiser with it's bulky 55000 base hull? or do I get the Fleet avenger with better maneuverability and 5 forward weapon slots.
I already have a Samsar cruiser, so I don't know if it's worth wasting Zen for ANOTHER cruiser that does the same job.
I was recently playing a PvE and saw a Avenger in action and it was killing everything with such brutal efficiency, I could help but be impressed by it. My Odyssey had a similar build but only at didn't kill things with such efficiency.
Having said that, I've recently started to really like the look of the guardian cruiser, so it's more of Form vs Function argument. Although I think I may have already answered my own question.
The Odyssey is actually a very capable ship, the first thing you could try is posting your build for advice. You might be able to get your Odyssey to the point where you don't feel you need a different ship.
When choosing between the Guardian and the Avenger, the first question would be what style ship you want since these are two vastly different animals. The Avenger is softer then the Guardian but is still one of the best damage dealing Fed Ships.
The Guardian is a more well rounded ship that can take a beating but also put out surprisingly good damage for a 3 Tactical Console ship.
If you want a Cannon build, the Avenger is the only choice.
If you wish to focus on Dual Beam Banks and make more of a front facing build, the Avenger is the choice.
If you intend to use Beam Arrays and broadside targets then the Guardian is the best ship.
The Avenger has speed and maneuverability, the Guardian has versatility and tanking ability. The Guardian can use access to Intel abilities like Override Subsystem Safeties as well as Gravity Wells do offset the fact that it only has 3 Tac Consoles.
The Guardian would be a play style more similar to your Odyssey, the Avenger will be a different style of play. Overall, I would suggest starting by posting your Odyssey build because there are likely some problems if you can't get good damage out of it. If you take the build you're using on your Odyssey and transfer it straight to the Guardian, you'll probably get similar results to what you're getting now and will likely be disappointed.
Perhaps you should take one of the new Command battlecruisers? That's what I decided to do when I've been thinking about getting new ship. Otherwise you can be just fine with upgraded Tac Odyssey or that Samsar cruiser you already have.
For me the Samsar is out of the question and that is mostly because I intend to fly Federation design in the near future. And while Command battlecruiser are expensive, I think they are worth it. Guardian and Avenger are good too, but if you take Guardian you won't be able to equip it with DHCs or cloaking device, and the Avenger isn't so pretty. Therefor the best choice would be one of those command ships (preferably Presidio for me ).

I agree with you completely.
The Presidio and Guardian are both very effective ships, but it sounds like the OP is after a more DPS oriented design. The Guardian has the advantage of being able to use O.S.S. but the Presidio has the extra tactical console as well as a Lt. Universal that can provide more tactical options then the Guardians Ensign uni station.
The Samsar is a fun little ship, but overall it has 3 Tactical Consoles, very limited tactical seating and has command abilities instead of intel which makes if fall very flat in the DPS department. The Prisidio has options to offset the absence of Intel abilities.
The Presidio is definitely worth serious consideration, it can also mount Cannons if you're into that. If you use it's console with the console you get from the Samsar they act as an RCS with the 2 piece bonus. This serves to greatly augment the ships already impressive turn rate. It might be a good mesh of the 2 ships you're considering.
Yeah i realise the two ships are completely different when compared. I like the guardian purely because it looks just amazing, feel good just flying it around without even fighting anything or anyone. It's pure for aesthetics for the reason I want it because I realise the upgraded odyssey and the samsar cruiser will both will the same role as the guardia and the samsar having better turn rate (i think).
After watching the other guy play with the avenger, I love the way it just glides into battle, TRIBBLE on everything without any sweat and that extra weapon slot really gives a big punch. I had a similar setup on the oddy tac cruiser, 3 anti proton dual bank, 1 neutornic torpedo. Sometimes it stsruggles to turn around in closer quarters without some help.
I also dont' want my ship list littered a million cruiser that does the same thing, I'd like to have a least one of each really good ship of each class.
i looked at the Command ships, while I love the Concord and Geneva ships, the presideo just seems too much like the Prometheus class with 2 less nacelle, rather underwhelming in its design, complete lack of charisma of the Concord, Geneva and Guardian. In that regard, I'll rule that one out. Shield modifiers are all similar between the fleet avenger and the new command ships.
I'll be going dual beam only and trying to squeeze as much DPS as I can out of the setup.

Based on this, it sounds like the Avenger is the ship for you.
I've tried it with my prometheus escort, but it dies just far too quickly if you get into any trouble. With the adapted Maco shield and some hull boost, it's slightly better but still feels quite fragile.
The oddy has great survivability even for a non upgraded version but lacks the agility.
I'm hoping the Avenger is a good mix in between the two and given what I just saw day, it looks promising. 2700 Zen for an upgraded version (if it is upgradable) wouldnt' be too bad either.
Do I HAVE to buy a new ship? No, not at all, but I want to, I like using ships of various characters.
I personally have been fliying the kobali samsar for the sole reason of... Well it just dosent die in a fight. And considering that you already have 30+ dollars of zen saved up, I would fly the samsar for a couple of months until the newest shiny toy comes out, and then buy that immediately.

The Samsar is a heck of a tank.
Not the greatest damage dealer, but you really have to TRIBBLE up to die in that ship. Very durable indeed.
OP, I still think the Tactical Command Cruiser is a good option for what you are looking for. Personally, I think it's much better looking then the Avenger, but if you don't like how it looks then I understand your reluctance to purchase it. It really is a great ship though. It's a tough ship that moves well and can deal some impressive damage.
oh yeah, the samsar is one hell of a tank. After using the T5 odyssey, it's surprising to see how much punishment it can take. Frist time I took it out for a test drive with all the rep gear, I could not believe it just wouldn't die.
