I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on the current ship tier system in the game. How do you feel about it? Does it work for STO? Do you think it could be done better?
I'm not satisfied with the current system. For new players it must be a terrible nightmare to try and figure out, unless they have one of Starfish1's marvelous ship charts. Do you think the game can keep going in this fashion? More ships to bloat T6 as it did T5? What if Cryptic announces T7 in the next year or so? Followed by T8? T9!?
*sigh* I know it's an impossible dream, but this system needs to be gutted. We need something that's a lot simpler for new players to figure out. A system that provides more freedom, flexibility, and greater ease of access to allow players to fly the ship that they want AND would easily allow for more ships to be added without invalidating past investments. And who knows what this could lead to. Maybe even redefining what a "ship" is, as well as space combat itself. A combat system with less clutter and more meaningful functionality for the ship. (but that's another discussion)
T5-U was like a bandaid applied to a grievous wound. Do you think the game should continue on this path and that we should accept the system as it is? Or can something be done? Honestly, I don't have much hope for it. Ship releases are less enthusiastic for me as time goes on. These are some beautiful designs, but the desire to acquire ships and expand my library is diminishing because I know where it is going. More ships, more confusion, more balancing issues, more bloatedness, and even more mistakes being made.
I used to think I would quit STO (for realz, yall) if I could no longer play it due to technical or network problems. But I'll add another reason; Tier 7. And I get the feeling there's a good chance STO is heading in this direction sometime in 2016-17.
Right now, the only thing T6 has over T5-U is the use of command abilities (not so hot), or intel which shoots DPS higher. All T6 ships give you a ship trait, which help, but isn't required for space advanced. I have only completed a handful of space elite pugging, as many cannot do the DPS required before a mission fails.
I don't like how you have to purchase separate upgrade tokens for fleet and nonfleet ships. I upgraded a Fleet Multi-Vector Advanced Escort with one of my tokens, and can't upgrade the non-fleet version. If this is a bug, and the devs want to check my character, Ouzbel@nepsthen, then disregard.
as I see it the "tiers" are fine.....just had a convo in fleet chat today about this very subject, consensus being T6s are clearly not superior to T5u, just different...they have access to abilitys the others don't but for the most part these new abilitys are lateral at best
I think they add diversity to the game and the only confusion new players seem to have is the false assumption that T6s are far superior to all other ships
the mistake was marketing them as a whole new "tier"
I would like to see each ship marked in the ship selectors with its tier like they have done with the T5u and T6 ships but other then that its pretty strait forwards.
as it stands shuttles are in a class of their own, T6 is marked, T5u is marked, T5 has the upgrade option shown and that only leaves tiers 1-4 that are mostly easy to tell from their size and weapons slots.
of course C-store ships now have the tiers marked across the top so you can easily see what ships are in the tier you want.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
I've decided that when T7 ships are released, wich will probably be sooner - rather than later, I will still be flying my T5.5-U ship.
The only reason I have the -U is because I got a free upgrade from Cryptic... Otherwise I would have still been flying a T5.5.
The Tier system is here to stay... Might as well get used to it, and either accept that you will have to dish out money every few months to keep up, or simply just accept that you are uninteresting to Cryptic.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...

I still think that tiers are overcomplicating and unnecessarily aggravating players for no reason.
IMO, there should be a Cstore option to buy the ship you want (available at tier 1), and keep it to level 60. They've showed they can scale them by level. Obviously, some would have to be unavailable in the Cstore, but- it would save a ton of art time doing this. A lot don't want non-canon designs, a lot don't want to leave their t5 ships. There are so many ships you have for 10 levels that fly by- never to be used again.
So many art assets for such a small amount of play. So many people not liking new designs. Such little variety in the "new wave" of ships.
And, the ramping up of levels/tiers will not stop. Once the seal has been broken, it sets a precedent. I highly doubt T6 is the end of it.
My thoughts:
1. What's there to understand? One tier per 10 character levels.
2. T5U is basically the same as T6, minus a few gimmicks.
3. Expecting the same ship to remain top-of-the-line for years is pure genre blindness. Fortunately, the game is easy and you don't need a top-of-the-line ship if you'd rather fly something older.
4. New, better things will always be released. There is no "best thing forever" in any MMORPG. You'll be happier if you don't take having the best and greatest of everything too seriously.
5. T7 will no doubt come with the next level cap increase, which will be who knows when. Like T6, it will be statistically better than previous tiers, but not game-breakingly so. Whether there will be a "T6U" is anybody's guess. My guess would be yes.
When the game was originally released that was most obvious.... we had 6 Fed and 3 (or 4?) KDF ENDGAME ships which were ugly for the most part while there were so many nice ships on lower tiers.
It was OK for me after a while because.... ultimately there were dozens of new t5 ships and a lot of "upgrade" versions of the original ones. And ultimately anyone would get to t5 and get that the lower tier ships have essentially no use but helping through the leveling progress (which was ridiculous at times. When leveling my Romulan and finally getting to the Valdore.... the ship I was looking forward to most.... I only had ONE SINGLE FIGHT in that ship until I had to move on... and that wasn't a bonus XP weekend)
Now? Well now its worst then ever. Tier 6.
The dozens of t5 ships are now pretty much worthless.
T5-U IS NOT T6. Period. For endgame we are now back to be stuck with a very limited and ugly choice.
And all previously invested money is wasted. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying "if I invest money I should be better then everyone else".... but hell if I pay 50 Euro on a f**** virtual Item I expect it to do more then just "doing ok" compared to the t6 thingis.. Especially since, again, THEY SUCK for the major part, in terms of visuals and simple likability. There isn't a ship id want to fly.
It sucks. It sucks hard. It was the worst thing they could have done. Instead of fixing a system that was broken in the first place they made it worst.

Yep. If tiers are a "terrible nightmare" to someone they probably can't figure out any other RPG gearing systems either. They are using the default white gear loadouts and power settings, and blowing up a lot.
Those people need a friend to help them out and explain things using small words and maybe hand puppets. Puppets are fun!

I had my T5 ship longer than some cars I owned, with no "new teir" to pick from, that includes fleet versions.
Glad you are here to tell me T7 is coming soon........................
Where it's really a pain is leveling.
Imagine any other MMO where you had to change your character's appearance every ten levels, even if you were happy with what you had before.

That doesn't take imagination. Lots of MMO's have characters' appearance dictated by their gear. You wear armor you look like an armored guy and so on. STO is very generous in that regard, you can have your dudes running around in their jammies and still getting the benefit from all the armor and other stuff you've got on.
I think that the concept of a tier level ship is just plain ridiculous. Get rid of the tier levels and just sell the ships as ships. It really should not matter what ship you command in doing the missions from season one to current delta rising. Allow the ship to evolve with the character. For example you can have a star ship evolve from a low level to a higher level that follows your characters career path or choices along with a choice in star ship abilities. The insistence of the tiers just makes a mess of the game. Since we can now upgrade armor and weapons why not allow for the upgrading of the ship too. As i see it, the use of tiers creates balancing issues. I took a look at the tier 6 command battle-cruiser for tactical officers, it had the layout in bridge officer stations in equal ability to the galaxy class Dreadnought. Hades, i think my Armitage light escort could kick both the command cruiser and galaxy-x dreadnought butt. Of course, the difference will be in the armor levels that those two star ships have.

In ground and social, yes. Not in space. In space, I have to equip a ship of the appropriate tier (or above), even if I think all the options are ugly as hell and would rather keep "wearing" my T2 gear.
If folks are confused about that, they've got all sorts of issues before they even think to download the game...I mean, seriously.
Which basically leaves me thinking that it's not the actual case, but that somebody's trying to make an imaginary group the scapegoat for a thread that violates the FCT.
Just because its a lower Tier does not make it obselete, I have as much fun in a T1 as a T6.
Think of it this way, In Trek, not every ship was the biggest and maddest ship possible, many battles had a mix of different class and tier ships.
Yes one day T7 will come along, I may buy a T7 f I see one I like, will it make my Delta Ships obsolete, No, they will still be fun to fly, just like the rest of the ships I fly regardless of the Tier.
Its easy to get DPS out of any ship to complete any content in the game, literally.
T1 - 5-6K DPS - Normal and Advanced
T2 - 6-7.5K DPS - Normal to Advanced
T3 - 7.5K- 10K DPS - Normal to Advanced
T4 - 10K - 18K - Normal to Advanced
T5-T5.5-T5u-T5fu-T6-T6f (lockbox and new command cruisers) - 18K DPs to 100K dps
Getting to these DPS numbers does not require a kidney, but a plan, and about a month of play to the plan, this leaves you with kit that will go on any ship, provide decent DPS on any ship and be able to play any content on any ship in whichever way you want.
No I see no problems with tiers at the moment, However, if they produce content that requires a higher tier ship only, then I will have a problem!
I have no problems about the current Tiers, but would like to see additional Tiers added. Each ship is not built equally and since this is a Star Trek game, we should add additional Tiers to each ship. Tiers like Exploration, Trading, Colonial Support, Research, etc. So a T5-U Defiant might have a Tier 5 in Combat, but a Tier 1 in all other categories while a Constitution might have a Tier 1 in combat, but Tier 3 in other categories. Of course, this would mean adding non-combat content to accommodate the new Tiers.
