Something I am curious about, but haven't seen it mentioned yet. How will they handle the Fed-KDF borders for characters that haven't put time into Diplomacy or have Diplomatic Immunity/Raiding Party granted to them?
Well this is a good example of them not revealing everything yet. So far this is just a tease.
I really wish people would stop putting pure speculation like this out there without a single shred of evidence from the devs. All it does is get people riled up over nothing. There are plenty of things to break out the torches and pitchforks over in this game, we don't need to make up anymore reasons.
Before bridge officer training didn't have a dilithium cost associated with it. Now it does with the new training manual crafting system. Before we just paid a few ECs at a trainer to get the job done. Arguably the manuals are way better but they didn't need a currency that is so heavily used in many other areas of the game attached to it. Just one more little siphon on something that could increase impulse buys of zen for dilithium.
So yes I can see that happening with the sector updates as well. Monitizing existing content is far easier and cheaper then producing new stuff.
I found it a very odd decision personally. I use sector space and the map shifting has never bothered me so it seemed odd to make changing it a focus. My biggest fear is will the servers be able to handle this?
I travel via sector space. Totally debunked your point!
On a serous note you commit the "vetran's fallacy": You assume that anybody just transwarps anywhere. I'm playing a newly created character right now (for RP/endgame ship reasons) and when I hadn't transferred a few EC over to make things easier I discovered that traveling via transwarp from mission to mission is quite expensive and crippling.
yeah, 60k might seem like small change, but it adds up fast if you use it a lot.
Also... the Fleet engines give you the ability to travel at over warp 10.
I'd like to know what it's going to mean for accolades that are specific to certain sectors, for example, Borg encounters. Will they just go away and no longer be obtainable? What about if you've made progress but not completed? Also vanished, or will you flag them as completed as a token of good will?
I see two possibilities.
1: you'll see the Red Alert button from anywhere in the Alpha quadrant, and have the ability to TW there to fight.
2: you'll need to be in the associated area of the quadrant to see the Red Alert.
I see no reason to believe the Red alerts will go away.
Before bridge officer training didn't have a dilithium cost associated with it. Now it does with the new training manual crafting system. Before we just paid a few ECs at a trainer to get the job done.
You can still do that...it's the captain trainable stuff that has a cost when there was none before. And frankly, it's worth the convenience since we can train untradeable boffs in careers' abilities other than our own, and Romulans have a much easier time getting captain abilities (you needed a Romulan captain of the right career and the same alliance as you to train Romulan boffs before). It's a pittance of dilithium for a huge amount of convenience.
Again, the point stands. There are plenty of things to complain about -- don't make stuff up and get everyone panicking for no good reason.
If you had a button to cook off every nuke on the planet even Mother Teresa would have hit it in under a week.
Or indeed anything involving the words 'customer' and 'service'. As the saying goes, the customer is always right. Even when they are very, very wrong.
And Taco, should your eyes chance apon this, here's how it works.
Group A bug you for change X on and on until you relent. You release some details on the proposed change on a blog and Group B turn up out of the blue saying 'hang on, we didn't ask for this!'
Meanwhile Group A keep quiet. They don't bother feeding the trolls or opening themselves up to abuse. Especially considering the critics, Group C, will take any and all opportunities to remind everyone that this game sucks, the devs are clueless and STO is dying.
T'is the nature of the forum.
To answer the OP I barely use sector space unless I feel like going the elaborate route from mission to mission to spam some Doffs and take in the sights as I go. And if I need to hurry and transwarp is not an option I just use one of the old missions in the same general area and warp like that, usually only 100 EC a pop.
But beyond hat, this is a feature that has been requested for YEARS.
For everyone who always says Cryptic doesn't listen, this is a perfect example.
We are improving a major feature of the game, based pretty much directly on player feedback.
And in response, we get complaints.
I don't know why I still get surprised by this.
if it amounted to simply that, then sure.
but just remember that nobody asked for a doffing nerf/break, transwarp dil cost, transwarp cd 'finish now' costs, or painful, tedious sector space travel. look at who you work for. given the recent 'updates' its no wonder people are worried.
Not only that sector space is not broken, unlike many other things, and that its walls certainly are a low priority player concern I also doubt that this game feature is of much importance anyway. The update of the PvE queues and the possibility to transwarp everywhere have pretty much made space travel obsolete. So who uses sector space to travel somewhere these days anyway? I certainly couldn't even recall the last time I did if it hadn't been for the anniversary grind.
So when is the last time you travelled in sector space except for the anniversary event and would benefit from a walls removal? (Thus travel=crossing at least one sector space border. Transwarping close by in the same sector does not apply (popular to get to Kerrat for example))
Cryptic I believe you're not only working on a low concern issue I also believe you're working on a feature you've pretty much made obsolete already anyways. There are more meaningful things to work on.
I use sector space anytime I need to go anywhere and either transwarp is on cooldown or there isn't a warp point in the sector block I need to get to. For a very recent example, the warp point for the Delta Quadrant is on the rimward end of Vyntadi sector block, but a bunch of the missions are in Tekara.
Everybody uses sector space, even you.

i am looking forward to this like you would not believe, i only hope you are able to keep the lovly artwork that was recently added to the sectors maps.
it will be very interesting to see how this will work when it comes, i am certainly looking forward to the prospect of starting from sol (ESD) clicking new rom as a destination and just sitting back and enjoying the journey.
to the OP yes i use sector space every day on multiple occations, sure i use transwarp on occation also but like an earlier poster i enjoy seeing the other ships that cruise the sectors and some of the hilarious ship and player names out there.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
I've never been a part of the shouting at the microwave crowd.
I only ever tested the spending of energy credits to transwarp to missions once. When it was new. I thought, 'Meh'. What's the point of designing my starship in a Star Trek setting if I can't enjoy the view of warping through outer space?" I use my Excelsior's transwarp only every so often. Mostly in attempt to trigger it's chance to fail. Because I think that chance being added to the game was pretty cool.
tl:dr I can't wait for the sector blocks to go away.
(/\) Exploring Star Trek Online Since July 2008 (/\)
Since I started playing 5 years ago, I have wanted to leave Earth, plot a course for a far-off destination, and "Engage."
And then yes... Wait while my ship traverses that distance in one single journey. I want to see other systems and planets and players whiz by me as I travel. And after a reasonable time, arrive. Space is supposed to be vast. I'm quite looking forward to this change.
I do like the occasional teleport usage (uh, I mean "Transwarp"). So much so, for the longest time, I'd only fly the Excelsior. But that was mostly because I hate all the sector block wall jumping. Now, having good engines, Slipstream, etc... Yeah... I yearn for a big open "field" to play in!
Besides, while my ship is flying is the perfect time to catch up on DOffing, kicking off another Rep Daily, playing with R&D, etc. Why, if only I could go in my Ship's interior, and tinker with mini-games for those actions (and/or others) *WHILE ALSO* traveling through space... That would be a dream come true. Now, before this starts a whole thread, I know this is IMPOSSIBLE with the current game engine, and has been shot down by the devs. That's fine. I've accepted it.
Still, letting my little ship avatar move along without being interrupted by walls, while I diddle in my inventor or R&D window... Yeah... I can't wait!

This. I go through sector space all the time and look out for unusual/hilarious Captain/ship names.
I like sector space. I'm looking forward to traveling through it without walls impeding my progress.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything.
It appears to me that the direction the Dev team is taking the game makes little or no sense . they waste time and resources on things like a Icon Revamp ,while the new Boff training adds some flexibility to the players in also takes away certain options and adds a stretched resource, i had a bunch of boffs in waiting to be used if i needed to do another build for some ship unseen . there gone i mean GONE. cant use them for anything if i wanted too .
while i do use sector space in some ways i prefer it .the game contradicts its self on if its a necessary focus for development , with not using it for PVE raids (stf) putting that content in a easy queue , but adds doffs to put you back in sector space , then takes other content adds it to the easy queue, then adds battle spaces which you transwarp too . and on and on . which is it ?? do we actually travel to these events or just wait in a queue at the club 47 on ESD?
rather than truly improving the game play , they just find new ways to dump a dil cost in something that really in the scheme of things doesnt deserve it. Make cosmetic changes that do nothing to the experience of the game , then when players suggest features we are told "Pickyourbattles" by the lead Gecko . making things pretty doesnt cut it when the core of game has features that are broken or broken mechanics that should be the developers top priority not what can we do to make the game look pretty . the game is 5 yrs old now, every new graphical change hurts players at the bottom of the specs line . if you need a state of the art rig to play a 5 yr old game something is wrong with the games development .
Improvement! That seems to be synonymous with outright removal of features, or at least devolved ones, as of late. I wonder. Will travel then be as responsive as those noisy and cramped pictogram buttons that took the place of clean and functional icons, and just as hard to visually navigate?

how are walls blocking sectors the same thing as content?

sector space needs an overhaul. actually because of all the things you just said. those are signs that somethings wrong.
maybe we want to navigate directly to the system we want to go to instead of guessing what edge of the map we should fly to first to get into the sector where it's located.
maybe we want to beam directly to the gound map of social zones like ESD and DS9 and not be bothered whit an additional loading screen.
maybe the game as a whole becomes more immerse if loading screens are eliminated wherever possible.
sector space is now just a bunch of rooms whit loads of doors most don't lead to places we want to go but we need to take them as a detour to the place we do want to go to. It's probably nice if we only have 3 to 4 of such rooms instead of the 17 we have now and the doors lead directly where we want to go. maybe when a system is usable people will actually use it but before that it's more likely to be avoided.
along side this update many other changes can be made. sector space could get updated to contain interactive missions similar to the dyson sphere space adventure zone. the planets can function as more than doors but as places to start doff missions. this overhaul can be used to create a place where the peaceful exploration that so many have asked for to take place. you could arrive as a system to find they are in need of medical aid and them you can order your Doff's on a relief mission. or you see a transport being ship harassed by nausican pirates and you can go safe them or of course if you are playing a nausican attack a lone freighter when it's passing you by. giving you some actual reason to spend time in sector space.....
THE NEW CRAFTING SYSTEM IS TERRA-BAD First of all it's not even a crafting system! It's just a dumb game system that's nothing more than a glorified slots machine.
second the "special items" you hope will be the saving the saving grace are messed up to.
Have you ever gone on a trip somewhere, where somebody else was driving, and during that trip you spent the whole time watching the GPS showing the little dot or the car moving across the map? Imagine if that GPS showed a 3D perspective of the little dot or car moving across the map, eh? Yeah..um...that's sector space. I can't imagine the sheer amount of imagination one must have for it to be anything else to them than that. Cause quite literally, that's what it is...it's a map...it's not an environment.
And to elaborate about what I said earlier about shrinking the Universe, yeah - I'm just not seeing how it's increasing the vastness of it. Remember when you were a wee child, maybe not walking yet or just stumbling around - and - how big the backyard was? It was huge, right? Then as you got older...it got pretty damn small. Those "walls" served two functions for me in creating the image of the Universe being larger. First would be the simple aspect of them being there told me the whole thing was too big to display. Wham, bam...it's too big to display...it's big. That just sits there in the subconscious as it being big. So now it's not too big? So it's smaller? Yeah, that's what comes about from that. Second would be that backyard thing. Those walls slowed the trip down - a longer trip based on "time" is still a longer trip. Likewise, a shorter trip based on "time" is going to be a shorter trip. These are things which will make the Universe smaller...not bigger - not more vast.
Honestly, the only boon I see to this is the ability to set and forget a destination. I no longer have to pay attention to the game to get somewhere. I can set that destination and go do something else knowing that it's going to get me there. 20k posts in no time! /facepalm
What would be nifty/cool/etc, imho, would be actually adding something to sector space. Work in some random encounters as one is flying around - maybe you get attacked, maybe you come across somebody else being attacked, maybe you come across somebody that was attacked and they need help, maybe you come across somebody that wasn't attacked and needs help, maybe you come across some anomaly to investigate, maybe all sorts of things like what happened from time to time in the various shows as our heroes were traveling from point A to point B...and not just the 3D map on our GPS as we set the autopilot to get somewhere...meh.

I agree with this part. While I think opening up Sector Space is a good thing, it would be cool if afterward, they did some random content. Maybe they could slap together the Genesis Engine and repurpose it for that use since exploration clusters are gone.

Frankly, I only use Transwarp when my destination is halfway across the map or more; otherwise I like to travel through Sector Space, and enjoy the ride Having most of the walls removed would just be a big bonus
And not only that, but traveling through different Sector spaces is worth it for the Doff benefits alone.
Was named Trek17.
Been playing STO since Open Beta, and have never regarded anything as worse than 'meh', if only due to personal standards.

Yes. I do indeed concur. Whole-heartedly.

Ummm correct me if I am wrong, but given that we are working with self driving cars now, I would hope that in the future whan man can travel between stars we would have computer systems that do this. I seem to recall hearing the phrase 'Set a course' quite a few times over the years of watching Star Trek.
Personally, I enjoy sitting and watching my ship fly through space, passing other ships and planets as I go to whatever my destination is. With the only thing that breaks that enjoyment being when I have to hit the button to cross a border.
To me, Sector Space is basically the worlds greatest loading screen for between missions. Someimes I just watch it, other times if I see someone else going the same way I'll race them, or if I'm in a bad mood I'll even cut them off ;P

And not only that, but traveling through different Sector spaces is worth it for the Doff benefits alone.
And a merry freaking Christmas to you too, Ebenezer.
