A fundamental issue for returners and others

supremeheretic36supremeheretic36 Member Posts: 54 Arc User
I'm a returning player from a pretty long hiatus...I came back briefly to check out LoR for about a week and haven't been back until I started play about a week ago. Mind you, I bought STO the first week it released back in 2010, from my local Best Buy.

I purchased my life sub near the end of season 1, and for the most part, even with all the blatant monetization, power creep, gated content, bugs, and myriad of all the other issues most players gripe about, I was still able to find fun in the game in my own ways.

Anyhow, looking at the present, I finally decided to give the rep system and some of the other things I never attempted before a try since I wanted to check out what I hadn't seen or done yet in the game. I'm in process of doing Omega, which at the time of this posting I'm about halfway from making tier 3.

I've had a hard time getting Borg Neural Processors, but I found that once I re-learned Khitomer in Stasis, I had a pretty good shot at getting one almost each run since that seemed to be the most "forgiving" STF for pick up players. I tried different space ones a couple times, but that is a definite fail for me since all I have is purple Mk XII gear and that won't cut it.

So I stuck with Khitomer ground advanced and I did well just being a smart teammate, buffing, focus firing, watching people's backs so random drones don't flank, etc. and getting processors was going just fine, because more often times than not, even if we failed the optional we still passed the mission in time.

With the change to the optional fail, you've basically cut me off from better gear and really made me wonder if I even should stick around. Well done, Cryptic.

If this is an indication of the gates and hoops I have to jump through in the other parts of the game now, then you've obviously lost touch with the average player.

Then again, given the track record so far under your parent company, they really have no desire to do anything for the western gamer other than part them from their money.

I have to say, I'm really disappointed. I'll probably finish the Mirror Invasion stuff because I personally enjoy that, but after the event is gone on the 20th, I have to really examine if it's worth sticking around for any length of time.

Thanks for the info. I definitely plan on doing the Romulan reputation next, but my issue is that I really need some of the Borg gear. And on a side note, I love trying new foundry missions so I will give the one in your sig a play, West.

you should get a sackful of them at tier 5, at least enough for 1 item if not more.

Just keep doing the hourly and daily rep projects. Eventually you get them from the boxes.

Also keep doing the normal STFs. You get them now and then.

I've gotten a few BNP's thrpugh the hourly project reward boxes. It would be nice if they adjusted the drop rate on them in those boxes. That might help.

I'm a lifer since Beta launched and seen very few good but mostly bad changes to STO. I'd say that last patch of 10/23 changed the dynamics of the game for ANY player. Look in the threads around that date and you will see the rage coupled with the massive protests from players.

The game has been semi broken at best since then with DEVs experimenting fixes or work around to the great nerfing of 10/23. That affected all game based missions and STFs included.

I know that with every season and new versions (what now about 9.5) there were changes taht made people leave/come back. This one was very different since tested ALL players..lifers like me, F2P and casual players. By nerfing the game to a creeping halt of advancement Crytpic thought its still best strategy to monetize STO. What a shame that things have not changed but on teh contrary took a turn for teh worse on power creep, gated content, bugs, and myriad of all the other issues.

Good luck and NOT so happy grinding!

There was a time this game didn't suck? When was that?!

@OP - I'm not sure you're aware, but you will get MK XIII gear from DR missions/feet, and can upgrade it to Mk XIV with the new research/upgrade system.

It's not quick and easy, but realistically, MMOs are designed to be addictive.

One of the many things I'm not too happy about is how extremely close the game is to pay to win. Tier 6 ships? Not without Zen currency. Fleet ships... not without a fleet and a massive amount of investment in time and in-game resources (Dil, officers, supplies and more), plus modules which cost Zen. Want to upgrade your Tier 5 ship? Zen. At this point, without Zen, as a Klingon you have the choice of a T5 raider, or a T5 cruiser (1 of each specialty); that's all.

Yes, I know some things are on the exchange. Yes, I know I can farm Dil and exchange it at an absurdly high rate for Zen. However, if this was supposed to be a viable option, why is it that I can't purchase newer/high tier ships with Dil directly, like I can with the lower tier ships? Furthermore, why is the only available option for T6 ships and the ship modules Zen? Sure, I don't HAVE to pay in Zen, but someone does.

Also... $25 - $30 value (cost of zen) for a single ship is absurd. I already paid a life time sub with my beta purchase, and this is the most expensive game I've played.

To Crusader and Catonikjames both, you guys can appreciate this...the last time I had done an STF, before trying the queues this week, was back when they were full missions. I remember how on top of the world I was to have gotten through Khitomer Accord and beaten them all. My, how times have changed.

Regarding these tier 6 ships and such: it's nice to know the money I've spent over the past for years on certain C-Store ships is pretty much all for naught and obsolete with this stuff. Heck, most of anything I had unique for being a lifer isn't unique or worth anything anymore.

Even the joined Trill species playable I bought when I started, you don't even get a benefit from making a character with it from the symbiote trait now.

I see what you guys mean...lots of changes for the worse, not the better.

I still remember plain as day on the old old forums, we veterans at that time warned that PWE was going to hurt this game terribly once they bought Cryptic, and we were 100 percent correct, looks like.

I still have a lot of content to go through and stuff from when I was here previously until now, so once I finish with that at least on my main, I may be done. We'll see. Thank you both though, nice to see some old vets a postin' in here.

The insta-fail optionals are rough for me. I wish they would adjust those a bit. I've tried Azure Neb rescue with groups from Public Elite STF channel and failed, tried Borg Disconnected Advanced and failed although almost made it to the final phase. I'm running these to get the Argonite gas which I need to craft components.
Seems like a shock to a lot of people that in a game where most everything was easily obtainable is now unobtainable. Not completely unobtainable, but maybe some months away before everyone is geared enough to complete advanced.

Here's the vicious cycle though...I don't have near the dil nor energy credits to be messing around with that R and D system, so that's pretty much not an option, and purple Mk XII everything just doesn't cut it at all through space, and barely on ground. So it's like you're basically trying to clap with one hand when you're attempting to get through advanced.

I've been playing off and on over the last few months. It seems to me that this game took a massive turn (rebalance) around fleet content being released, back a few seasons ago or whenever.

"Back in the good ol' days", a buddy and I would team up and run some missions, no biggie. Now... its not so much like that, being in a half leveled fleet makes all the difference in the world.

If you aren't in a half decent fleet, You can do the daily grind on the rep system (normal STFs), that'll get you some decent Dil & EC, keep an eye out for high dil reward duty officer missions too.

Once you have level 10 school of research, crafting your own gear becomes a lot more feasible. That'll give you about a 60/40 chance of crafting purple quality with small input.

    Hope this helps a bit.

TLDR; It takes some time to get to a place you can see progress being made, but its doable. Joining a fleet will make this quite a bit quicker. Hope this helps.

Hate to tell you, but if you have that much trouble with "only Mk XII" gear, rep gear will not make it that much easier.
It's not just the quality and level of the gear, it's the kind of gear you equip. And more than that the Boffs and their abilities.
And of course a good idea on how to use them in different situations.
    And knowing the missions....
