The specializations that are coming out are neat, and will add some flavor for your characters. I'm certainly eager to get my command specialization track going (as are others). Wouldn't these specializations make more sense as something that we start doing as we level up, instead of coming at the end of the "normal" leveling progression?
I know the introduction of the specializations was to give players at cap something to progress on, but it seems odd to decide that you're going to become a stealth operative, or a command officer, after you've become a Fleet Admiral.
I'm probably the only one who find very funny to become a commanding officer after we reach the admiral rank.
I mean, were we not commanding officer before that ?
If you ask me they should start at level 1. A new character starting the game now will never be able to catch up with a player who's been playing since the launch of Delta Rising without the help of one of those power-leveling websites.
I cannot see them doing it at start, 30-40 would be a good place to start.
I can dig that. My personal taste would be as soon as you hit Lt. Cmdr., since Cryptic is already throwing a little bit at you at a time (such as DOffs being a thing not at start).
Replace the existing skill trees with a primary and two secondary specializations, raise the spec cap accordingly, and back award points for it.
They're eliminating the "putting points into BOs" with skills that are all on or all off.
It's always been an issue that people put points into all space (or less commonly all ground).
Raise the spec cap from 90 (the new total) to 150.
Refurbish skills as spec point abilities.
Things like driver coil make more sense as part of a specialization.
You take the basic space abilities and create a Starship Captain primary spec. You take the basic ground abilities and create an Away Team Commander secondary spec.
Then you take the class abilities and turn those into secondary specs.
Along with that, you could look at taking some of what the skill trees do and just making them innate to avoid this being a total nerf.

The idea has some merit but would have to be tweaked from what you said. Remember Tac, Sci, and Engi are PROFESSIONS.
Definitely in favor of getting rid of the 1-9 stuff in favor of the way specs are setup.
The issue is going to be how to distribute the points.
Devs would have to do at least one of the following:
1) Increase levels and award 1 point per level.
2) combine skills together.
3) award multiple skill points per level.
DO NOT, however, want the profession tree split up.

as the majority of players had at least 3 characters at level 50 when specialization was introduced i guess they thought it made sence to start at level 50 so as not to cause too many complications with the many players with existing characters just to benefit the much smaller number of new players or the few existing players who might start new characters.
the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
just be greatful they didnt start specialization at level 60.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
I agree and see them scrapping the old skills page in the future or they'll get rid of the new one and say it wasn't working as intended. It appears half implemented and now we have more redundant systems that provide the same things (more or less) but, are separate systems.
Same with the Boff changes they implemented.
The ideas are there just not thought all the way through.
If you can train a boff to have any skill the only reason you'd need more than one is because you can only slot so many powers, therefore the reasoning behind having one boff do all is moot.
I guess we could train all BO's in the same level III skill and get rid of the cd's?!
It seems more and more playable content is being removed from the game and being replaced by UI clickies.
The new Boff system will let you train bound boffs. That in and of itself should be reason enough to welcome it.
But that isnt all! You also are able to cut down on the number of Boffs needed.
Instead of having a set of boffs for each ship you now only need ONE set for ALL ships.
-insert so much win picard meme-
Oh an you wont have to go through the annoying process of removing gear from the boffs just to trade them then put the gear back on... and you won't have to worry about keeping a slot open for trades.
I for one HATE the current system.
as for content being removed... what? What is being removed? The arduous tasks and repetitive retrains for boffs if you don't have the space for more?

Max level characters would have something to accrue regardless since they would start the system with no points just like a newer character would. Whether a player had one or several max characters doesn't prevent the system from being introduced earlier in a player's character progression.
EDIT: The original point I made is that a character specializing once they're an admiral doesn't make sense to me, and that the specializations should be introduced earlier in character progression. Putting it at the end of your leveling progression, while making number accruing system sense to me, does not make sense in the context of a Starfleet, KDF, or Romulan Republic Officer advancing through their career.

With the amount of grind required, its a all in or not.

Well, my thought is that your profession could become a secondary you simply start the game with already complete.
It just makes zero sense.
Intel and Command are technically the secondary trees if you understand the profession tree being the primary.
ooo, I kinda like this idea

Yeah, huge loss there.
