So it's been a long time since I've been in the game. Maybe a full year now or more?
Anyway I'm waiting for a giant update right now and was wondering if the T5 Fleet Excelsior I have is still worth using?
If I'm not mistaken I have a full set of Borg on it as well.
Is that still good to use as well?
I'm generally a PvE type of guy who just does missions and STFs (If those are even still around anymore) so I'm at least hoping I can still hold my ground in that portion of the game.
Also did they raise the level cap past 50 already? And if so what do we get for maxing out now?
I'm basically asking for a recap of events over a year so I apologize but I mainly want to know if my ship is still good.
In a word, no. If you want to upgrade that, you need to buy an upgrade token. Yes. You read that correctly. You need to buy the ship again, so you can use the ship you already bought.
The best thing you can do for yourself is to buy a Lockbox/Lobi ship. Those are completely free to upgrade.
You can get by with Mk12 equipment on any T5 or T5U ship as long as they're at least Very Rare, but expect longer fights. An Upgrade system is in place that will, at a cost, allow you to upgrade your equipment up to Mk 14, and with luck, upgrade the rarity value for an additional mod and boost.
If you want to retain any usability of that T5 Fleet ship, buy a T5U ship upgrade token off the exchange or the C-Store and upgrade it at the Ship Selector. It adds 4 Starship Mastery levels and scaling HP/stats up to 60.
The new toys are T6 ships, only available from the C-Store and Lobi/Lockbox/Event, with the Feds of course getting the best choices. All T6s have an exclusive 5th Mastery trait that can be slotted in your Traits tab, and grant potent bonuses you can use with any other ship. However, you must first master said T6s to attain them. And they are NOT account-unlock, you have to work each ship on each character.
Level cap is 60, plus another 30 or so levels to max out all of the available Specializations (Primary Specialization and both secondaries). Specializations pretty much serves as a side-grade for Cryptic, so that instead of having to always create new ship Tiers at higher levels, they just add new specializations and theme new ships around them.
DPS is king now more than ever, so better start planning out your build for DPS if it wasn't already. NPCs have had their resistances and HP buffed to make them "harder". If you're not adequately geared, forget about even doing Advanced Space queues.

Oh man I'm actually pretty excited after seeing all of this. It almost sounds like a new game.
But I'm gonna be honest, buying a token to upgrade my ship doesn't sound all that appealing.
Would I be better off just buying one of the new T6s?
Is the ship still viable? Absolutely. You can do anything you want in a T5 Ship but it will require significantly more skill then when you last played. When you left, your Fleet T5 Ship (often called Tier 5.5) was top of the line, that's no longer true. There are now 2 classes of ship above your T5.5 Ship.
Tier 6 - The current top of the line. Their 6 Ships get 4 Starship skills, meaning the ship gains XP and gets abilities on level up. These 4 abilities are specific to the ship and only apply to that ship. They also get a 5th skill called a 'Starship Trait.' This is a special trait earned from the ship that stays with the Captain and works on any ship he/she flies. Starship Traits are available only on Tier 6 Ships. Tier 6 Ships go for 3000 Zen.
Tier 5U - This is an 'upgraded' tier 5 Ship. You have the option to upgrade your ship to almost Tier 6 for significantly less then the cost of a Tier 6 Ship. This requires you to purchase a Starship Upgrade Token for 700 Zen. This will give your ship the ability to gain the 4 Skills that Tier 6 Ships have, you just won't have the Starship Trait.
Tier 6 Ships have one more BoFF power then T5U Ships.
Since your ship is Fleet, upgrading to T5-U would give you one extra console slot over Tier 6.
If you upgraded to T5-U you would gain 1 Tactical Console Slot in addition to the following ship skills:
T1: +25 Physical Damage Resistance Rating, +25 Kinetic Damage Resistance Rating
T2: Regenerates 1.25% of current max hull every 3 seconds in space, and twice this amount out of combat
T3: +25 All Energy Damage Resistance Rating, +25 All Radiation Damage Resistance Rating
T4: +10% Hull Hitpoints
So to answer your question, at your current ship level you can compete, but it will be difficult. You'll be at a disadvantage, but not useless.
If you put 700 Zen into the ship you would be competitive and near the same level as the best ships in the game. A T5U Advanced Heavy Cruiser Retrofit can handle anything the game dishes out. Most of it almost effortlessly.
If you bought a Tier 6, you would have the 'best of the best.' This would put you where you previously were when you left with your Fleet Ship and the top of the line.
Fleet Tier 6 Ships have not yet been released, but once they are they will take position at the 'top of the food chain.' Tier 6 Lockbox Ships and the current free giveaway Ship for the Winter Event are essentially Fleet Tier 6.
People can get 40k DPS out of a Fleet Galaxy-U now, the Excelsior is fine. Still plenty viable when ASTFs can be cleared by T1 ships and the STB guys are defeating the hardest A/ESTFs.
Follow decent build advice for a non-A2B Excelsior, adjust to make it Reciprocity based (Phantom Ship mastery trait - 3k Zen - reduces Tac and Intel boff cooldowns on being missed) and away you go.
Throw an upgrade token on it for $5 or 10 million EC it'll kill plenty of things. One less boff slot and won't get a trait or Intel skills, but 11 consoles and still move quick and hit hard. Just because its no longer top tier doesn't make it incapable. Heck a free-at-40 9-console Assault Cruiser can still run the DR stuff just fine, so no need to throw something away if thats what you like using.
The level cap raise, yeah they already did that. Expect to spend a lot of time grinding though, as XP gains were severely nerfed and the cost per level is something like 150k per level, deliberately slowing us way down to try and give the illusion of more content. You don't get more skill points, but instead get Specialization points, one per level, that are like weak traits that build up a not-really-branching 'tree.' There have been MANY threads about this new setup, few of them positive, but thats a different discussion.
- Intel seating are Hybrid, and you must match the Boff Class AND Specialization. So If you want to use the Eclipse T6 for example, you will need an ENG/Intel Boff.
- Delta Rising Pack comes with 3 exclusive Very Rare Intel Boffs; one of each class.
- The only other Intel Boffs available without forking over cash are regular Common-grade Class/Intel Boffs from Elsa Mora, one Rare or Very Rare Sci/Intel Hiearchy Boff from a level 57 Delta Mission, and the Talaxian Boffs from the Lobi store.
- Expect to grind a lot; XP gains past 50 are low. However, if you haven't already completed some other earlier missions, you will level up once or twice.
- Personal suggestion: Focus on Intel and Pilot Specialization and Sub-specialization. Be sure to set them as your active under the Specialization tab.
Man, bump all this technobabble. If you want to use it, then use it Get the upgrade token and slot in your gear, then go fly.
And a side note: $30 to get a single ship trait that forces you NOT to use the ship you want to use to help with ONE BOff seat's abilities ... doesn't make sense to me. But that's just an opinion
The fleet excelsior I feel is one of the best ships in game. This class of ship can be made into almost anything. I have been flying my fleet excelsior for a long time and even before that I was flying a excelsior. These are great ships. Even better with the 4 star ship mastery and the upgrade to 5U. I have flown all the FED ships from tier 1 to tier 6. The fleet excelsior is by far the best to my fighting style and my build. My ship is rocking 104000 hull, and over 23000 shields (all epic consoles and weapons). It might be a antique, but it will still kick some TRIBBLE and take names...

- Universal Boff slots ARE NOT compatible with HYBRID SPECIALIZATION Boffs, such as Sci/Intel, Tac/Intel, and Eng/Intel.
- ONLY T6 ships can make use of the Boff Intel abilities.
- Intel abilities replace regular class-specific abilities.
