  divide your damage by the time taken.
  
  If you have basic software skills you can write a parser for the combat log.
  if not you can do it by hand.

  Considering there are literally thousands of people using the CombatLogReader that is the official DPS meter of the DPS channels, I think your caution is excessive. Use what everyone else does.
