It's all random, but if you are lucky, yes, it's possible. I did a [Ctrd]X3 (with over 15attempts), but it ended up with terrible mod when upgraded (dmg and ac/dmg).
In the end, it's just luck and a lot of resources. I'll wait for them to make a system that's not as terrible, and meanwhile, I'll continue using my weapons.
Just keep crafting mk 2 like mad till you have a collection of mk 2 worth upgrading.
Remember that other combos like accx3 will sell well to others. Good way to recoup your costs. So all it will cost you is your time and perhaps your sanity.
Like everything else cryptic creates your expected to sit there and click over and over till your eyes bleed.
You specify what Mark level and damage type you want the item to be and then the Mods that it gets are random. So you could specify, say, a Mk II Disruptor Beam Array and then the mods it gets will be random, possibly [mod]x3.
Note that you cannot specify the mark level for the "special" items that unlock at level 15 of a school, like the Omni Beams, TR-116s, Wide-Arc DHCs, etc. as these are always Mk XII.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
i did some crafting yesterday @beams level 7. one crafted blue Mk II [CrtD]x2 ended up after upgrading as epic Mk VI [Ac/dm] [CrtD]x3 [Pen]. Therefore its completely random. :rolleyes:

Whats funny about your post... is... you do realize you crafted likely the best possible combo of mods in the game right ?
Still having said that... don't bother upgrading anything that isn't purple. If you want gold cheap (which is the only reason to upgrade mk 2) you want to start at purple. Its also the only point where using experimental tech makes some sense.
EDIT speaking of which meimeitoo consider upgrading any [crtd]x2 [pen] weapons you craft as well... seeing as they are better then standard x3 crtd
Thanks, guys. I was afraid of it all being random, but had hoped it was maybe only for 1 mod. Guess not.
They said to have the "perfect" system where we choose our mod and all would have taken more time, up to a year. But since they wanted to release it as soon as possible, they released it in this state, and hope to "complete" it some time in the future. Obviously, since it's Cryptic, they'll never complete it, and in a few years they'll make some revamp that will just change the UI and call it a day.
As usual, a half made feature, that will join the long list of half done stuff we have in game, or that were removed from it.

Use One Experimental Purple Tech
Use one Blue Research upgrade.
Have a 20% chance to go to UR for 6-7 rolls.... at a cost of 1800 or so D.
Should it hit UR... you will have a 10% chance to go gold for how ever many rolls are left.
You will find if you roll 20 weapons... you will end up with 3-4 golds. You will also have a collection of URs. At this point check your UR cast offs for overage. Some of them will have a high chance on another roll. Up to you some people sell them anyway... keep in mind though if you have wepaons with overage they may sell for a slight bit more.
Anyway to get a complete set that is the cheapest way to go about it.
EDIT - on those UR "castoffs" if you did manage to get a really great 4th mod like crtdx4 or accx4 or crtdx3 pen what ever your going for... it may be worth going all the way to 14 with it every level up is a chance to go gold on it.

i have like 40~50 attempts now and didnt craft even one [CrtD]x3 yet. But already at least twice [dmg]x3. Therefore i started upgrading everything with [CrtD]x2, which is quite uncommon too - at least on my toon.

Well, you can still sell it and buy maybe 2 of the crafting doffs.
Really nice of cryptic to make lockboxes the only source of the specific crafting doffs that are necessary for the "special" crafted gear like the omni beams, right? :rolleyes:
