I've tried several times and cannot seem to beat my opponent at "Fastest Game on Ice". I'm on normal level. Either I don't go fast so I can stay on track and my opponent passes me, or I try to go too fast and I slip off track. It's getting really frustrating, and I can't do this for 25 days. I heard somewhere you could get turned into an animal to race alone or something. Anyone know how to help me?
Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

Last year, is struggled at first. Then I figured out if I had Q transform me into a critter of some type, I could win easily. Timing this could sometimes be tricky, but is seemed pretty reliable.
Run almost straight on the first part, the edges give you a bit of leeway there. Roll on corners (press W twice) and keep running straight on any easy sections. I go so fast without boots I almost catch up to the opponent from the prev race. If I use the boots, I can pass him easy and almost reach prev racer if he's slow.
To start you get to run just before the counter gets to 1 so you have a tiny headstart
On corners - drift towards them, ie turn before you get to the corner and then cut the corner a little. This restores traction and allows a minor course correction for exiting the corner
If you are sliding too much, roll forward as this will stop you immediately.
Finally be sure to sprint at every opportunity and then winning is a doddle.
The hard bit: Getting past the race co-ordinator to actually start the race when there are 15 or so people also wanting to start. The answer: change to a less populated instance.
Quickly tapping spacebar near corners and releasing keys before landing will give you the quickest full stop for a safe turn. Never lost a race that way.

What kind of critter? I heard it was shelat cub, but that didn't seem to work for me; I still got an opponnent I couldnt beat.

Wow, thanks. I failed like four times, tried the rolling on corners thing once, and won *easily*. Very good advice.
thanks for the advice. I've now won on three characters in a row without failing.

The race track is open 24/7 so you can practice it any time you want to get used to it.
I find lining up for the longest straight line you can get and then just running gives you best chance to win. Once you get to a corner that you can't just gently turn round (which is anything other than very minor bends) jump and you'll stop dead provided you stop pressing the fwd key at the same time. Then line up again and run off at sprint speed.
Learning the track is part of the trick, you can work out exactly where to aim for when running and which bits you can be a bit more risky with when cornering.
1. The first series of turns can be "drifted" through fairly easily, they're kinda wide and not necessarily hyper-sharp.
2. Walk through the S-curves by the lake.
3. After that series of S curves is a semi curvy section under a bridge, however, said curvy section has an actual straight line you can run straight through. Part of this involves "skirting" the outside of one little diamond, remember that the diamonds are not hard and fast markers of the track. What sucks is that the amount you can drift outside a diamond varies too much between diamonds - what is a "safe" skirting in one track section is insta-fail in others...
4. Walk and/or drift through the turns after that stretch.
5. Floor it to the finish, the last turn can be drifted through, especially if you're entering it from the left wall, as the path widens a lot...
One "advanced" tactic I don't see mentioned much is letting up on W to "break out of" sprint mode. When my game is definitely on, I've been able to sprint at even hairpin turns, then "let up" on W for the half second necessary to break sprint mode and decelerate to walking speed in time to walk through the hairpin turn, then immediately resprint and let up again for the next turn, a great way to make up even more speed once you master the timings involved...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

this event need one realy BIG improvment - and that is last cca 50m of race. Especialy last corner - ad that is puting some fence here so you cant by bad movement (sliding - not intional) to get to up of hill and get - you leaved track and failed, repeat.
WTF ? i was wining race realy big marging and need to run whole race again because game partialy laged and partialy screed me ?
rly ?
so put some fence here or remove leaving traic faulire in last 1-2 cornesr to prevent geting on nerves.
That is a different event. The race that awards the pics of Q you need for the ships is against a computer opponent, and is really easy if you use the tips in this (and many other) thread(s).
The "PvP" race occurs only at specific times and is you against zero-to-eleventy-billion** other players, and is thus much more difficult to win. It is the winter equivalent of the summer hoverboard race and like that race it awards epohh tags which you do not need for the event ships.

It's a matter of knowing when to let off the W key, how to clip the snowbanks properly and where you can go out-of-bounds and by how much. It comes with practice but you can see in my video how to clip the snow to get yourself around those hairpin turns without having to "let off the gas" and how to quickly release the W key to minimize drifting.

You can beat the race fairly easily if you have the "Frosted Boots"
You CAN run on the track and still win.
You can cut the corners "slightly" on the S-Curves.
To keep from sliding too far when running, jump when you have a sharp curve without using a direction button and you should stop dead.
Also, changing your direction a second or two early helps.

After a few rounds, you will be racing the clock to see how fast you can do it. This is what I was doing.

Fleet Admiral Stowe - Dominion War Vet.
Where/how do you get those? I've only tried to race twice, and I really can't face much more of it...
