So I got myself the Ar'kif retrofit earlier this week. I've been trying to get a handle on using the special attack, and I'm seeing something odd.
When I open fire with it, a timer appears on the button, counting down from 20 as if to imply it will last for 20 seconds. But it always seems to shut off after 4-5 seconds. What circumstances shut the Focused Singularly Beam off?
I know it uses up sing charge, for instance, but every time it's done this I've had charge to spare.
Thanks in advance for helping me figure this out.

I'm sure your DPS is great, but as Kahless said, "a petaQ with high system mastery is still a petaQ." (Well, he should have said it...!)
Because if you sneeze while playing it'll stop the Beam from functioning.
It's bugged. As in if you click it cross your fingers that it'll do what it says it SHOULD do. That's it really. it's bugged and was never fixed.
I've had times were it did just what it said and used up all 5 levels of the charge, Sometimes even while being hammered with enemy fire. And I've had other times where Im taking no fire and it stops at using one charge. other times where it seemed to stop without using ANY charge.
If the bug was fixed it may be a cool thing, but instead use the console to put yourself into Annihilation mode and leave it there for the bonus.
Yep, it's a very tempermental weapon.. generally, just use it on stationary bosses to add a little extra damage over time. The main perk of the console is the Annihilation Mode.
Same experience here. Just recently got the ship, and found the console very useful. Annihilation mode, if not just for the name, is a very useful weapons boost and also has that ship animation I didn't expect.
The beam itself has a very twitchy firing arc. Restrict firing it to either stations or battleships - it's very effective that way, especially if you fire on an open shield arc so it can rip into the hull.
The beam isn't bugged, sort of, but it stop shooting if something (i.e. a destructible torpedo, a fighter, another ship etc.) - no matter if friend or foe - is between your ship and your target.
But there is an easy way to use the beam to its full extent: maybe you have noticed that the AI is basically planar: if you position the ship far above (or below) the intended target - and with a little luck - the beam will shoot until the energy will be depleted.
Anyway make sure that the target is well within the fire range!
As mentioned, it is sadly way too easy to interrupt the beam. This has been a fairly common and reoccurring complaint since the ship was in testing on Tribble, and the devs either think its fine, or don't really care. The full channel time already makes it a risky enough move, since you need to slow way down or even stop to use it on a target.

Unless of course you happen to fire a destructible torpedo of your own within about a 45 degree angle of where the beam is.
Breaking line of sight has never stopped borg tractors or shield drain beams (THAT'S NO TACHYON. TACHYON SHOULD BE THAT) from slicing your favorite bits off, though. No reason it should be doing that with this.
We've asked the Devs to make it uninterruptable, but they never got to it because they wanted to leave us the freedom of being able to shut down the beam ourselves.
*eyeroll*
If I wanted to shutdpwn the beam, I'd just press ESC to lose target.
Why/how in the bloody TRIBBLE would anyone want to shut down only the beam? It makes no sense.
Because if you end it early, it doesn't use up all your singularity charge and I believe you can stay in Annihilation Mode. When it works properly. If it runs out then you come out of AM (and it triggers the console cooldown) and you have no singularity charge.

I was looking forward to seeing how the Singularity Beam worked (despite the bugs) - however I just got my Ar'kif and if doesn't have the Focused Singularity Modulator console. Do the T4 Ar'kifs not come with one?
When I use the beam I find it best to already of clicked on my buff and to have the target dead center of my firing ark.
As for been able to stop it ur self its a bit daft at the moment toggle on and of should be good enough but nope. Click any thing and 90% of the time n it turns off.
Well, that sucks so does that mean I can't use Annihilation mode at all with my T4 ship?
Short answer: not now.
Long answer: If you'd be lvl 50 and buy the 2k zen ship you could put it's console on the T4 ship and it would give you all it's benefits but that's kinda pointless 'cause you'd already have the superior T5 version to fly around with...
It's usually the C-Store ships that get all the fun consoles. I think the consoles are usable on lower-tier variants of the ship in cases where you're leveling a new alt up.
When my Romulan Tac officer hit 50 I went striaght for the fleet version of this ship and didn't know anything about this console until I read this thread. Naturally I had to go and get it. Love the annialation mode and the cool animation and I've been able to use the beam to good effect. Also as a added bonus I happened to already have the Plasma Quad Cannon that pairs with this console for a set bonus.

I like when a ship does something special.
Same with the Guramba's Transformation and the Andorian Escorts wing cannons actually....animating while shooting. Gotta zoom in but its there.
Shows the developers took a little pride in the ship.
