Borg Disconnected is actually one of the easiest things to do on advanced, if you know what you are doing.
For starters, a basic description of the queue can be found here:
http://sto.gamepedia.com/Mission:_Borg_Disconnected
From this point on I'll assume readers have a basic knowledge of the event. I will also assume that we're talking about the Advanced difficulty or higher, where it's essential to rescue the disconnected borg ships.
Upon entering the event, the team is met with a decision. There are 3 towers and 5 players. All 3 towers need to be manned or it's mission failure, so one ship needs to man one of the towers alone.
-If you are a strong player and can do it alone, volunteer to man a tower, and call it out in chat.
-If somebody says they got a tower in chat, doesn't call for help, and doesn't show obvious signs of being over his head - let him handle it!
-Also, it's generally bad practice to change towers in the middle of the event. Don't do it unless you have a compelling reason to do it.
-Under no circumstances should you abandon a tower if you are being overrun. Even if the other two towers go perfect, it's still mission failure if you give up one. Under those circumstances, call for help.
-That last piece of advice has no target audience. If you're here, you do research, implying you won't be the one overrun. If halfway through the event an extra ship shows up at your tower, check to see if one of other towers is undefended.
Once you got your 2-2-1 split, it's important to keep your eye on your goal. Your goal is to RESCUE DISCONNECTED BORG SHIPS, not kill everything in the area. Enemy ships will in fact reinforce themselves after a short time if you clear them out. This is the only PvE event in STO which could in theory be accomplished without anyone on the entire team firing a single shot. In practice, complete passivity won't always work, but you should be defensive and only engage the ships you strictly have to remove.
-At later stages of the event, it's better to hang back out of range and let the Borg, Undine, and Voth fight each other, while avoiding aggro. It is worth noting that the Voth "Borg-Killer" frigates can kill the disconnected ships really fast, so some targeted strikes on them might be necessary.
-A team of two can have one ship draw fire, while the other doesn't attack anything and rescues. You would have to communicate in order to do this.
-It is also beneficial to camp the tower area. If you can "trim" all enemy ships within 10km of the tower and let the disconnected ships come to you, then you can rescue them.
-Borg ships have plasma torpedos which cause plasma burn. While under the effect of plasma burn, you can't rescue and have to wait precious time for it to clear. Hazard Emitters will remove plasma burn. You should have it, and if you have only one slot of it, don't use it as your hull heal but save it for when you need to rescue.
-If you have a cloak, use it. You need to decloak to rescue, but it prevents the enemy from targeting you, especially at the later stages when they have other factions to shoot at.
-The Romulan Reputation Cloak ability can be used to get a "free rescue" since it gives you a few seconds of being untargetable while able to rescue.
-The "Rock and Roll" pilot's specialization is another "free rescue".
-Nimbus Pirates/Photonic Fleet/Summons in general can potentially provide other targets for the enemy to shoot at, but generally are not as usefull if you're already being targeted.
-There's a lot of other science abilities and special consoles you can use. By now you get the jist.
The last stage is when three dreadnoughts show up and start fighting. While it's completely optional, I'm sure you'd want to try for all three.
-They go down faster if the entire team focuses on one dreadnought at a time. The order doesn't matter significantly.
-If no one is calling targets or specified and order, step up and call one out in chat yourself.
-While it isn't under your control, it also helps if the dreadnoughts target and damage each other, so try not to draw aggro.
Idiot mitigation:
If you pug, you'll probably have one player who is some type of non-performer on your team. When this happens, you can either let him ruin the match and waste your time, or you could not let this happen.
-First, communicaton is key. The non-performer may be ignoring chat for whatever reason, but there's three other people on your team who will be responsive and you could coordinate with. If you say your team has four idiots, I'd say it likely has only one.
-If the idiot is alone at a tower, obviosly the team needs to reinforce that tower.
-If the idiot is on a two man tower, let the idiot be the tank while the other player rescues, regardless of ship. You can't rely on him to do the rescue, and that's what ultimately needs to get done.
(In not just the case of this event, but in life in general, it's best to prioritize tasks by importance rather than by difficulty.)
-General messages in chat reminding people not to draw aggro unless they have to should be enough to get the mid-quality players to do what they have to.
-It only takes one player to defend a tower, so it really only takes three players to do the event. Victory should still be possible even with two useless players. Just focus on rescues and try to avoid fighting as much as possible.

*Exceptions:
When he's sacrificing his career to save his best friend's life. (Spock did the same thing when Archer was dying.)
When he's participating in an unrealistic "training" exercise which is really just the instructors messing with the cadets.
....and, that's all of them.
TV Show Picard did things by the book
Sisco did things by the book
Movie Picard didn't read the book, but the TNG movies generally sucked
Janeway used the book for toilet paper, and got promoted to Admiral for it, mostly because Starfleet Admirals all belong in prison and they promote people like themselves.
Archer didn't have a book to read and had to establish precedent as he went along.
and JJ Kirk, if we were being realistic, isn't qualified to swab the decks on a starship.
The first mob you encounter should be whittled down to just a single Borg probe. This will prevent another stronger Borg mob from spawning. That means you won't have to deal with Borg cubes until much much later in the mission, if at all (since it takes so long for NPCs to kill other NPCs).
If you have a T6 ship and have access to Intelligence Team 3, you'll find it can be quite helpful.
Borg Disconnected Advanced is so easy it's actually possible for a skilled player to solo 2 towers, rushing back and forth between then and not losing a single disconnected Borg. I wouldn't recommend doing it, but it has been done and enabled a 3-man team to get to fighting the dreadnoughts (2 guys on one tower, the other floating between the other two). Again though, I wouldn't at all recommend it, I'm just saying it's doable with the right skills.
This, oh so this.
Seriously. Twice I've had people break away from their tower to "help" me and on both occasions I didn't need it and wasn't having the slightest bit of trouble.
