Playing STO at 3840x2160 on 4K monitor ;-)

For anyone considering the recently released systems with 4K res, here's what I've found out. The short version is it's very nice, go for it if you have the $$$$$.

Got the MSI GS60 Ghost laptop with 4K res and NVidia 970M/6GB. Very nice system. I wasn't sure how STO would do at such high res and I did have a few issues trying to play in maximized window mode.

My first experience was with the laptop connected to a Samsung 28" 4K monitor. I had to crank it down to 3K for that to work, otherwise the game would choke on loading at the "Cryptic" screen. But once in I could raise it to 4K and get good framerates. Now that I've taken the laptop on the road and don't have to worry about multi-monitor support I can just run it in full screen mode. I did 4 mirror invasions tonight at 3840x2160 with just about all the graphics options on high and anti-aliasing at 16x. Again, smooth frame rates and a great picture. The only trouble I'm having is the player names over the ships are a very tiny font and hard to read. I went into options and maxed out the size of the tray buttons, otherwise you'd need a magnifying glass to see them.

I did some screenshots to give a general idea but of course they can't do the actual picture justice. And the text over ships wasn't captured by the screenshot:

    Jaw dropping 'wow' moment.

*sigh* Another reason to invest in new hardware.

*TRIBBLE* now the devs will make it more graphically intense.

awesome screenshots. congrats on the rig. i'll stick with 1920x1080 for a while longer yet.

However, the romulan ship, the level of definition now highlights how awful it looks, a random melange of textures, some sharp, some blurry, but none of them make any sense. I assume this is the borg shield effect? newer looking skin with older textures on top?

how bout it cryptic, a little update for old shield effects? :p

Wait a while... I think the cost might still be a bit... extreme.

    Very Pretty, I'm impressed.

I also read in the forums that STO looks fantastic in 3D...when it's working.

May have to look into upgrading my laptop. :D

--Note: You may need a beefy internet connection to watch video at 4k resolution--

    Nice Video.

The game is acting up again, trouble getting it to start in full screen mode. What I finally had to do was start it in safe mode, then Windows maximized, then just quickly grab the sliders and max out the graphics settings. That worked last night at least. As I said above, other than some text being small and hard to read the game looks and works great (once u get it started anyway) in 4K res.

Very nice. I recently upgraded my video card, choosing one to specifically support 4k UHD. I still have awhile before I can make the jump to the TV/monitor.

Very impressive. Lot better than my old IMac. I got to get a new computer soon. I'm missing out out on all the graphics!

I've consolidated some new screenshots on my photobucket page, I took several shots of the names of ships parked just outside the Delta Quadrant HQ:

I can't wait to get home and do this on the 28" monitor vs. this laptop's 15.6" screen. The game really looks fantastic. I never even realized the MACO logo was on the bigger Federation Cruisers.
