Sela's (un) Dramatic Appearance

rynohawkrynohawk Member Posts: 66 Arc User
I don't know if it's just me, but the "dramatic" return of Sela was somewhat lessened by posting her picture with the Doctor on the promo for the mission on the launcher. Would've been nice to have just been surprised. My 2c anyways. ;)

Yeah, that was pretty spoiler-rific. I'd been purposefully staying away from the latest blogs and the boards to avoid spoiling the surprise (I'm at level 56, so I should hit 60 in about a month :P ). Turns out that all that trying was for nothing, as Cryptic goes and sticks the spoiler right on the front of the launcher. >_<

Edit: Although, I have to say, they clearly made some sort of attempt to disguise her in that picture, as she looks more like the Doctor in a blonde wig than the Sela we've been used to so far... o.0

This character is why I don't play my Romulan any more. Tovan Khev is NOT my BFF! Get him off my bridge!

I wanted either Sela or The Doctor to say, "I'm not saying it's Iconians, but it's Iconians."

Alas, I guess we can't all get what we want.

Completely agree. The picture in the launcher, the blogs, the forums... It was impossible to evade all those spoilers before I played the new episode. Pity. Her appearence could have been much more surprising.

Truth be told I thought about your signature during the mission :D

Also, it was even less dramatic when she have the face of a east Germany Olympic winner full of male hormones, and nothing remotely close to IRL Denise Crosby, or what Sela looked like, which was an accurate representation.

Now see, what if the Elachi spliced her DNA with a testosterone filled East (Which btw doesn't exist any more) German Olympic winner?

I thought the spoilers in the STOlauncher were pretty bad. That visage of hers needed to be a surprise IMO.

Cryptic's PR & Marketing 101. If at first you don't fail, try and try again.

I think they're just taking pages from Hollywood's playbook.

Release the entire movie in the preview trailer, and then release the actual movie consisting of the trailer itself sandwiched between filler material.

Well, for me that was okay... didn't mind the teaser..... I was surprised still...... we didn't have the option of shooting her on the spot.

It took over a century for Spock to look old.
Sela should still look like she did in Next Generation.

    Agreed on both counts.

She is similarly 'disguised' in the mission itself.

LOL I have been avoiding saying anything because people get mad if you dont agree with them and call you trolls but I kept thinking that its a pretty decent likeness. They do a bit of charicature to bring out certain traits to accentuate the character but by and large that is Denise Crosby.

THANK YOU! I am amazed it took this long for somebody else to say this.

Sela may look more like Denise Crosby now, but it looks a lot less like... Sela... Especially given how little time has passed since her dissapearance (Like, a couple of months tops?)

If they cast her now she would look like that.. there is only so much makeup can do as humans age. Also tuvok is vulcan they aged him as well and voyager is "younger" no one commented on him. I think its just that "guy" thing where everyone wants women that are 20 years old looking perpetually. I think she looks fine to be honest they aged her and accentuated some feature. This very looks much more like the actor then the original version ever did. Tuvok is amazing and 7 of 9 is fairly decent as well. Harry Kim is not bad but the limitations of low polygon modelling shine through with him in the hair line still I think he is pretty decent.

You do realise Sela would be around the 50-60 year old mark now (in Earth terms)? We did meet Sela first in TNG. She was in her 20-30's then.

I'd nearly swear that Denise Crosby only agreed to do it if they changed Sela's appearance to be more realistic with the time frame and good for her if she did.

I think they should tried to keep it a secret. However then you have the population on the forum will spoil it anyways. As they will put her name in the topic headline. Or have it in the forums replies.

Its kinda hard to keep things a secret when others spread the news.

I could have sworn her eye's were out of sync, their directions seemed too far apart. That's what made it look so awful I think.

But yes, 100% agree that they fouled up spoiling their own episode. Without that spoiler, I wouldn't have guessed and it would have been a great reveal.

Does seem like Corsby has been after a bit more of an action role for her. Anyone remember that conference Q&A where someone in the audience says he is disappointed that you can't fight along Sela in STO and she says she thought that was terrible too and would ask about that. Looks like she did :).

Well not just that ... it was pretty obvious during the whole Mission ... "there is Romulan Weapon Fire ... we don't know if it's RR or Tal Shiar ... wait what ? Tal Shiar is still a thing + Iconians ? ... then it's obviously Sela ...

... it was more like "Sela were are you, come out already", than "OMG it's Sela" ...

And there is this white dot at the north of the map named "Sela".
But I agree spoiling the reveal, first with "starring Tim Russ and Denise Crosby" was a bad idea.

Can you imagine what would have happened if PWE was in charge of promoting Spaceballs?
"Spaceballs! Featuring Rick Moranis as Bill Pullman's father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate."

Since Cryptic is so used to aborted arcs ((fake?) Fek'Ihri, True Way, Gorn rebels, remains of the Tal Shiar on New Romulus, Borg resurgence, Preservers, Defera invasion, etc), it wouldn't have been surprising to have Sela never come back.

I'm glad they decided to bring her back and finish the story arc. Since we last saw her get towed into the gateway. So there is a lot to tell of what happen since then, and what will be her new intentions.

It will be a great story when all said and done.

It was nice to see Sela back, but rather disappointing to see they didn't really do anything with her in the mission (and killed off all her fellow escapees off-screen)

She shows up at the very end of the mission, answers a few questions you already know the answers to, and quietly allows herself to be arrested. Rather anticlimactic, actually.

I'll admit, I was hoping for some more in-depth dialogue options.

You mean you don't get a "[punch her in the face]" option if you're part of the Romulan Republic?

That would be one of several appropriate actions I feel one could take, depending on their opinion of Sela.

I mean heck, as Federation I can murder a defenseless Ferengi merchant, destroy an allied Benthan ship, promise to take an incarcerated prisoners proposal to help the federation with genetic engineering, help the Tal Shiar who are in the middle of experimenting on Republic personnel with borg implants, but no matter if you like Sela or hate her, the conversation amounts to Sela spouting some useless information you already know and sending her off to prison.

For the long wait, I can't help but feel the conclusion to the Sela arc here is a bit lackluster.

No he started to look old in the later TOS movies and then seemed to age less over a century, got older looking a few decades later, and then for some reason de-aged a little bit a year after that (form his prespective).

wait, what? there's a dialogue check for equipped traits? i didn't know that was possible - wonder if that was a recent addition
