Uncanny Valley?

Is it just me that thinks the recent batches of Trek actor faces has taken a nosedive straight into the "Uncanny Valley"?:eek:

Yeah, I do think that Seven and the new Sela look off. It isn't because of them trying to go for a more aged look either. They just don't look quite right to me.

They don't look quite correct, but I assume that is because of the STO tailor limitations. I do know that Tuvok forced them to completely redo the tailor, so maybe 7 and Harry can do the same thing again.

Thats what I thought. Nileex doesn't smile or show any expression on his face to go along with the top notch VO.

The Doctor is painfully emotionless too. I want some Picardo forehead movement dammit!

Buuut I know that facial expressions are a very rare things for video games to attempt, so I won't be holding my breath.

The uncanny valley is when things approach reality but just... aren't... quite... right. A better example would be Kevin Spacey's modelling in COD. STO's issue isn't the uncanny valley. It's just that for some reason they don't look at all like what we expect. That's not uncanny valley, just clearly evident they don't look the same as the people they're modeled after.

IMO some of them are close approximations, but I think 7's face is totally not right at all, and now Sela's is WAY off. In terms of a low-poly game model, The Doctor, Neelix, Tuvok, and Harry Kim are all perfectly acceptable

Not at all for me, but Seven just looks...off, can't really describe exactly what is wrong, but... something. The new Sela's just terrible, I'm not sure why they felt the need to update here, I thought the old one was a closer resemblance than what we have now...

    Yes, this.

One thing I will say, I hate to throw around "photo realistic" because they aren't, but these characters (including Worf, but not the old Sela) are a lot less "cartoony" looking than most of the game's characters and player created characters. It definitely makes them stand out.

Maybe in 1997. Nowadays, facial expressions should be more then possible to realize. Even in a MMO.
