Elite mode has 7.8x as many HP as normal mode but only provides around 1.95x as much XP.
This is baffling. The ROI on harder modes is terrible:
- Normal mode gives you 1 XP per every 254 HP of damage done.
- Advanced mode gives you 1 XP per every 450 HP of damage done.
- Elite gives you 1 XP per every 1023 HP of damage done.
normal mode will be 400% as fast as compared to elite mode, assuming same damage output.
If normal, advanced, and elite all provided the same XP per HP ratio then it doesn't matter how many HP advanced or elite ships have when it comes to grinding for XP. But they don't work this way.
You're penalized for playing harder content.
Based on these numbers you should never play advanced or elite if you're looking to grind XP
Anyways here is the HP changes...

I'm not willing to pass judgement, yet. They have a long way to go to attract back the players.

Challenge? Hoo.. you mean, buy a scimatar, buy a lot of dil to upgrade your gear to MK XIV epic and press the space bar untill all NPCs are dead.
Only challenge in this game is PVP and they even killed that with DR.
Cryptic think that by putting a lot of HP on really dumb NPCs with no AI, all ppl are going to have a fun and challenge game.

Sadly, this could well be true.
Imagine if Cryptic decided to revamp the AI and actually have them be a challenge, have them use specific abilities they would have access to depending on ship/faction and use them right. Balancing shields the second an alpha strike hits, cycling heals while received sustained beam damage. Hitting back with buffed attacks, torps on exposed hull etc.
The tears would flow like a tropical thunderstorm.
Anyways, it's misdirection to say there is a "penality" for playing harder content. Really, you don't get as much reward. :P
Also, "grinding" suggests doing the same thing over again ... because it's easy to do. So easy it's boring. You know ... grinding. Who the hell "grinds" difficult content?
You got that right. It's Pathetic
And how is that different now?
And you can regulate the dificulty on normal and advance and make Elite a real challange, not just a DPS race. You can make "casual" happy with a really easy more (normal) medium mode (advance) and you can make "pros" happy with a real challange with smart NPCs and not just a DPS race.
Now, this one, no one is happy, not the casuals or the pros.
At least with DR the queues poped, now they not even do that. Too many broken stuff, too many overpower stuff for PVP to survive.

I daresay the vast majority of the players in STO want to play the hero captain in shining armour, not the redshirt that gets blasted because they were tactically outmanoeuvred by the bad guy.
Bags of HP is pretty bad for endgame hijinks for sure, but in time once everyone is rocking higher tiered gear it won't be so impossible. Smarter enemies on the other hand will need hard counters, adapting builds for certain enemies.
Sort of like PvP in a way, and look how popular that is.
Indeed. It would be nice to please everyone but it would only be a matter of time until the majority will want a slice of the elite pie without putting in the learning time.
Yeah the issue that I have with the decision making cryptic does, is it's all about PVE and then pvp they fix later once they go "yeah that OP PVE ability is definitely OP in pvp".
Now of course most the players are PVE, so maybe that's why pvp isn't really important to cryptic.
Also they brought placate back... which was awful the first time they introduced it. It's like they don't learn from their mistakes... oh yeah .... placating all the time.... that was a terrible decision.... let's add it back into DR!!!!! And then they also added in disables.... it's possible to get hit by 2 different intel abilites and then have all your trays locked out for 10 or more seconds. So you just stare at the screen and count... Or if your playing in arena or cnh and you get 2x hit by 2 intel ships... then your locked out/disabled for 20 seconds.
