Really, the lifetime free ship upgrade is bound to character???!!! I opened it with my main character that already have an upgraded ship. Can you please change it to bound to account, which will be more logical!
As a work-around:
What ship do you want to upgrade for another character? If it's on the same faction, you can just upgrade it on the character you accidentally opened the box for, slot the ship the other character is supposed to use, and upgrade it here. The ugprades for ships are also account-wide (or rather, the upgrades for the same ship on another character are now free.), and IIRC, they also apply both to the regular and the Fleet version of the same ship.
That works well with C-Store ships, since you can claim them on every character of that faction. Lockbox ships are free upgrades anyway, so only regular ships gained from levelling would be a remaining issue.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
for the life of me I cant see why cryptic chose to make these tokens character bound but they did and I cant see them changing that.
the best you can do is chalk it up to experience to check out the release notes for items before opening boxes.
now you are left with 3 choices, discard the token, bank the token for future possible use, buy a T5 ship on the character that has the token and upgrade it.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

What happens when you can't read.
They put the text in big yellow letters on the descriptions.

Ya maybe, but I took the box from the mail with a character, the box was among a lot of reputation box. So I opened it with the other boxes!
I have not played STO in quite a while however I was thinking of the lifetime sub seeing it is on sale. So I was scanning the forums looking for info on the lifetime sub and I came across this thread. I have something like 15 level 50 characters does this mean I would need to buy the lifetime sub for all 15 of them? That would be a tad to expensive and would be reason enough for me to reconsider even coming back to play STO.

Lifetime is account-wide, the token in question is a single item given to lifers.

No, lifetime is for the account. So, if you 15 characters are on the same account, they will all get the benefit. It just that they give a free ship upgrade token, the box is bound to account, but the token itself is character bound. The token from the store are account bound. So they create a new one that is specificly bound to character.
