At 40 I wouldn't worry TOO much about it, as you don't want to spend serious money on a ship till you can equip Mk12 gear (since you'll be replacing it soon enough). But yes, disruptors are a good choice; not always the #1 choice, but there is no situation where they're a bad choice either.
Long term, the only modifiers you want on a weapon are [acc] and [crtd]. Accuracy because you can't kill anything you can't hit, and critD because crtH is easy to get from other sources while critD isn't and you want a mix of both.
Lastly, look at http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/ as a tool for planning out your skill setup and ship build. Then when you're asking about stuff in the future, its a great tool to show people what you already have and make it easier for them to offer advice.
What beams should I use instead of Disruptors? This would be a new setup as I don't have beams for this character at all. I was mainly using cannons and corrosive PLasma from lobi...
I will continue with Disruptors cannons for now..but would like a new set of beams, hence was trying to understand which ones would be #1...
And alomg side which torpedoes? Plasma?
Whatever I had initially, I was upgrading those with very rare quality...to make it to the character level...so far it worked fine....now seeking new suggestions...
Unless you're going to go for a crazy-high crit-hit rate (20%+), no kind is specifically The Best. Every kind is good in its way. The most important thing for your ship is its boff layout, then equipment layout, then doffs, then energy type down at #4.
You might be better off pulling out the STO Academy link and build what you expect your ship to roughly be at level 50 (leave your weapons and a single console slot open for a set-bonus piece), then lots of people will probably be happy to suggest "Use X, no wait use Y!" Figure out what you want to do, how you want to play, then pick the type that fits. EVERYTHING is dangerous if you play to its strengths.
Until then, just get a nice set of Mk X [acc] green-quality disruptors or plasma beams, whichever you prefer. They'll do the job nicely until its time to gear up for real.
At level 40 run the colour you like, I doubt you are at the damage levels where picking one energy type over another will make a parse noticeable difference.
Long term it will be different, but right now, it does not matter, whatever you get now will just be replaced in due course.
For that long term, anything but Tetryon has merits in its favour.
Ok, looking at various forums, I still decided to go for disruptor beams on my benthan...
All were upgraded to mark X VR. Have 4 Disruptor Tac Consoles. 2 Plasma Torps UR Mark X.
This combination works great....I am able to defeat attack ships and Galor hands down...
Tac officer is a Photonic officer. DOffs are VR (1 Torp+3 Cannon+1 Shield Destn). For now they work Great for my Cannons for Kazon ship and Benthan....
Kazon I havnt tried as yet....But trying to build more skill points for benthan to strengthen it....
If you could advise what beam weapons would be beneficial for me for Major general, I can check exchange and see...

The truth is:
- Only 20% of STO players operate at a level where their weapon energy type actually makes a parser noticeable difference to their damage.
- Well over 70% of STO players do not even operate at a level exceeding just firing 8 decent beams at 125 weapons power close to target.
- Gear counts for nothing if you do not have the skill to use it.
- Don't just listen to conventional wisdom, learn and understand stuff. The vast majority of players will tell you the [dmg] mod is worthless, when for 90% of players it actually parses very close to or higher than everyone's favourite [CrtD] - run the numbers through yourself.
- For PvE, every build is viable, but only a few are optimal.
- Use Tribble and not Holodeck for testing stuff out - it is what it is there for.
