Delta Rising has really shaken up STO for me, and for that I am thankful. Prior to Delta Rising I was grinding away trying to finish up reps on all my characters, and getting enough marks and dilithium to get the gear I needed to make the grind faster, more bearable and fun. I was obsessed with trying to get each of my alts to thematic and fun builds that also had higher dps numbers than average.
That all changed with the crafting preview, when I realized my fleet didn't need to upgrade our starbase or holdings any longer. We had access to all the mark X fleet gear and could upgrade each individual piece ourselves. Then shockingly Delta Rising made many changes to the flow of combat that I just didn't expect, and I now no longer feel the need to play those aspects of the game. This has essentially equalized every ship for me, and 99% of all gear as I zip around the galaxy doffing, playing dabo, mining dilithium (rich veins only) and working the stock exchange. The only gear that matters now is how fast my impulse engines go, warp drives that influence transwarp, and Doffs in general.
Oddly enough I am very ok with this. I find myself finally free to finally enjoy the the little aspects of the game like maintaining captains logs, and exploring the games story as presented in Doff results, story mission, and featured foundry missions(all of which I never felt I had time to do because I had to grind, grind, grind!) Hell the vast majority of my doffing is in exploration, sciences, and diplomacy the tasks I always wished I was doing as a Star Fleet officer.
I used to feel sad that I was feeling the push to fly non-hero or canon ships to get the most out of my build. Now it doesn't matter what I fly. I have been flying all sorts of tier 1-4 ships that have been in mothballs for years.
On top of all of that I am finding that I finally feel wealthy in the game as my EC builds up by the 10's of millions. My latinum and dilithium by the hundreds of thousands, (and my lobi by 60 lol ) since I no longer buy new gear/keys off the the exchange as soon as I get the resources to do so. Pretty soon I will be wealthy enough to do what I always longed to do, offer quests to other players directly and give large and interesting rewards to any that do them.
I have also been contemplating expanding my collection of alts from 8 to whatever it is my limit actually is, since I dont really have to grind anything for any of them anymore. Now I truly feel free to make captains purely for the roleplaying possibilities.
So yes, oddly enough I feel the need to say thanks to Cryptic. Thanks for releasing Delta Rising as is. Thanks for freeing me from the grind, and revealing to me the many fun alternative activities I can actually do in STO. At first I was really worried about how I would keep up with the grind, but then I realized not only was it not worth it, but it wasnt needed to enjoy STO.
Am I the only one who feels this way? Are others finally feeling free enough to find new and interesting ways to enjoy STO?
TL;DR Delta Rising made all gear/ships equal to me by changing the flow of combat so much, and now I am getting mad rich from playing the other aspects of the game and not upgrading any of my gear and ships.

Are you for real? I thought this was throll thread or someone else working for Cryptic
Its how I've always played the game. I never cared for mega-deeps. I built my first and only character to do what I want him to do, and simply learned how to be efficient about it.
I don't care to run Grav Well+Torp Spread, I run Tyken's Rift.
I don't care to play glass-cannons, I built up my Shield Tanking and lots of resistances.
I don't care to minmax Energy Damage, I have a forward and rear slot taken up by a Torp and Mine weapon respectively because their set bonuses are worth it.
And my ultimate reward for it all? I was able to immediately run DR's Story Missions on Elite.
I could deal sufficient damage because I diversified my damage sources between Energy and Exotic damage, with a bit of Kinetic thrown in.
I could take a tonne of punishment because I built to be a self-sufficient Shield Tank.
I could SOLO the new content on Elite in reasonable time (even that holographic Voth Bulwark), because my ship wasn't a minmaxed one-trick-pony.

I am 100% for real. I used to be able to keep up with the grind and do elite STFs no problem, but everything has changed now. The grind is too intense, the payoff too low for someone who has never broken 15k dps consistently on any character. However I had invested so much time and money into the game that I didn't want to just walk away.
Now I am having a blast with all sorts of aspects of the game I was ignoring before while trying to get better and better at defeating all the threats to the federation. Hell I am not even worried about logging in every 20 hrs exactly so I can que up my next rep project and crafting research assignments.
DR changed the nature of the game enough that I just go with the flow now. I am even leveling at a decent rate, with my characters are gaining about 1/2 a level a day just from casual doffing(even though it doesn't really even matter lol).

I was much the same way. I was able to play through all of DR no problem with my main, but it just cost way too much in resources to try to upgrade their gear to the "new" endgame. So I just backed off and looked at what else I could do in the game.

FYI our "megadeeps one trick ponys" can still solo the new DR content on elite, just 17x faster than you can.

CONGRAT's... just sorry to see it has taken so long for you to get here. What you describe is
how I have played since joining (April this year). I have one charachter (Fed Tac), current Lvl just
below (54), and have just completed the "Dyson" episodes a couple of weeks ago. As you seem
to be doing now, I've spent my time just cruising about the galaxy as its presented to us. No
pressure, now push to "Grind", "Gear-Up", or "Level-Up". Just enjoying what STO offers.
I guess for one foolish rookie (me), its more than enough. :P
