Why can projects not complete offline??

So...when the first "revamp" of the doff system came along, we got the wonder of waiting for every "finished" task to have to "complete" after log in.....not a big deal, but a slight PITA, that seems to not have any reason for existing....

Now, with "Delta rising" we get lag on the beginning of projects as well, no longer can you "select and start," now you have to wait, sometimes a few seconds for the project to "update" after you select it......then the "start button de-greys and you can actually slot the task.

Why?

It doesn't seem that the way this system worked back in June was even broken or in need of a fix....now it's way slower than it used to be.....

Just cange it back to the old version and get rid of all this lag.....

Or just log in your character, walk to the fridge and open your 30th can of Mountain Dew for the day. By the time you pour it into your faded Big Gulp cup and totter back to the computer, your doff missions and research projects should be done finishing, or at least close enough that they'll be done by the time you can click 'accept' on the finished ones.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but the whole "If I have to wait one nanosecond it is a crime against humanity!" mindset is *really* getting under my skin today.

They are just trying to slow the players down.
Have you tried the new forum on your phone?

[feigned backhanded put down + not reading into the problem]

Maybe I'm just getting old, but [complaining about complaining to hear myself talk].

Yes, the backend lag is a pain and we have no real explanation as to why they changed it months ago and we appear to just have to live with it. A five second wait for every single assignment/project when they completed while you were offline is not the end of the world, but it is definitely a downgrade in QoL.

As the OP mentioned, with the release of Delta Rising selecting a new assignment (or R&D project) can hang in limbo for a variable amount of time before you can click on the button to start it. There is no indication that you just have to wait it out. The first couple times I encountered this was with R&D projects and I thought I might have been missing a component or was already fully queued. It happens randomly as if it doesn't understand which duty officer is assigned to the project (look at the success/crit rates).
    >> Workaround: Move the entire Duty Officer Window to force a redraw.

Yeah, TBH they should just put DOFFing on the Gateway. So we don't cause lag ingame. And of course the game won't lag us.

One correction. There was nothing feigned about that put-down.

I agree. A downgrade to a working system sucks. Thanks for redraw workaround though, gonna use that tonight.

Why> My guess would be STO's database engine is so close to overloaded, they on't want to put any additional stress by having database transaction (IE Doff assignment completions) for offline characters. With STO being a F2P game, it's possible certain characters won't sign in again for a LONG time (or ever again) so they keep the server hardware only serving those logged into the game live.

The other thing it's doing is getting me to accidentally make upgrade tokens...
I go to beams, scroll down and select the 20 hour project from the bottom. Then I select cannons, scroll down and select the bottom projects, but it's actually still somehow beams, just with the scroll bar reset to the top, so now the bottom project is upgrade token; beams.

From what I recall reading past threads about they lag issue... There were people who had issues where completed Doff missions were simply stuck in the queue sometimes for days after the Doff mission was completed.

This "forced time delay" on the front end is basically some type of check on the back end of the Doff system to ensure completed Doff missions do not get stuck and artificially decreased the number of active Doff missions you can run.

It is not a perfect solution since people must wait and there are still a few instances of stuck Doff missions, but it seems based on reading those past threads that stuck Doff missions occurs much less often now than it did in the past.

Is that absolutely 100% true? I dunno, it is simply something I have read and I have never had any Doff missions that got stuck.

I usually queue my rep dailies while I wait.

I used to use this same method....but sadly it does not compensate for the lag....I can finish doing all my rep contributions and I'm still waiting another 2-3 minutes for all the doff missions to complete.....

and they don't even complete in logical order.....I slot my R&D from the top down.....yet, on completion, they complete from the last started to the first started....makes no sense whatsoever.

What sucks the most is the UTTER SILENCE about an OBVIOUS QoL nerf. We didnt even get the obligatory "Working as Intended"-line. So i'm thinking something negative, sadly.

I already quit playing over the log on lag time. Doffs are the only thing that made the game worth playing for me and this effectively broke Doffs. I grit my teeth and bore it for a week and couldn't take it any longer. A few weeks later, and I don't even bother logging in to check anymore. I just show up on this forum and check the messages to see if folks are still complaining about it.

At this point, I don't think them fixing it would make any difference to me. As far as I'm concerned they broke the game and I no longer have the motivation to play... Heck, I don't even have the motivation to check this forum weekly anymore.

And this time, I think my hate for Cryptic is going to be permanent.. I hated them for shutting down City of Heroes. I hated them for how bad they did Champions Online... I gave them a second chance when they added Doffs to STO and now that they have broken it after I have dropped a large sum of funds into the game, they are not likely to see another dime out of me again, ever and that goes for Perfect World too.
