I dont know if this belonged in the space metagame super thread or not so i just figured i would post it as its own thread. I dont follow dev blogs or twitter or anything like that. But i was wondering if there were plans in the future to improve upon pet/hangar AI even more or if it is pretty much in its final state?
I keep wanting to get into my current carrier ships and i've been thinking about getting a JHDC but i'm not fully satisfied with the hangar AI.
-no self preservation script so they will hug a cube that is about to die. On my dedicted carriers i have attack and recall bound to quick access keys but there are factors like group comp, group dps that sometimes cause me to have to recall pets earlier just so they dont get caught in a warp core breach.
-cannon pets like BoPs on Voquvs that will orbit around their targets firing their turrets. IMO the AI should adjust its flight path or attack path based on the weapons it has. If it has cannons and torpedoes it should fly straight in shoot shoot shoot, then speed away and make another run. If it has beam arrays it should go in and orbit (preferably not 0.5km away from the target). Maybe also give those ships that have beam arrays 360 degree torpedo launchers (if they dont already have it). Right now on my "lazy" carrier builds i just go with ships that have beam arrays so i dont have to micro manage them. On ships where i want to max out my carrier pet dps like my pet BOPs i chose ship weapons like DBB and i stay at 9+km. Then i recall my pets and once they are almost on me i send them back in again and hopefully they will fire their THY and cannons.
-better aoe mitigation...this one is actually just a minor thing since when hangar pets die we can just resummon more. But when fighting mobs that have mass amounts of aoe abilities it would be nice for pets to have some sort of defense against this (other then keeping them docked). One BFAW from a gate and bam-bam-bam all the pets are gone. With this one though its hard to come up with something that is easy to implement but doesnt make them impervious.
WoW lock and hunter pets have a passive that reduces their AOE damage taken by 90%. There is this one elemental boss on the timeless isle up in the cow area that is meant to be done in a group. All of this bosses abilities are flagged as aoe and because of that a lock/hunter pet can tank it with zero problems. Their pets scale with character gear and even a person with crappy gear can pull this off. I dont want a passive like that though. I know its odd that i would go on for 3-4 sentences describing what another game has and say that i dont want it. I would rather have something like a pet version of evasive manuevers that they will pop if they come under heavy attack.
I would love for more polished pet AI and I agree with your points. However, even if the AI doesn't get touched up a bit more, I would at least love to have formations available. Maybe tie them into the current settings we have available. This would open up the possibility of having dedicated fighters/bombers who react according to their purpose, as well as seeing a cleaner flight pattern then we currently have.
The idea of having to micromanage your pets is pretty ridiculous because any pilot worth a lick would know when something is about to blow and would be well out of the way of the explosion radius. Not to mention the maneuverability of the smaller vessels should make them very difficult to destroy.
Sadly there are too many other aspects of this game that need to be touched upon before we would get anything resembling a coherent fighter/bomber squad. I'll be happy with my scorps for now (grumbles something about the attack ship...)
