Zoom out range & general ship sizes - I have to ask again given DR release...

aspartan1aspartan1 Member Posts: 1,054 Arc User
Will we see a general reduction in the sizes of ships in space? They are really far too big for my taste and always have been frankly speaking but numerous requests over the years have always fallen on deaf ears it seems....

If we can't get a reduction in size of ships can we at least get the option to set our zoom out to at least twice what it is now? I play Xndi escort now and the zoom out on my 2560 res monitor is almost what I want but it could be a tad smaller. :D

Sadly all other ships dont even come close to the visual reduction so it would be nice to visually "feel" the vastness of space and the 10km range we were supposed to have in general - just sayin'......

Sadly, i suspect that technical issues are a problem for your proposal.

Although, I have to admit, I too would like to be able to zoom out just a bit more.

On things like my Adapted BC, or my Bortas, the zoom is not quite far enough out for me to get to my optimum comfort level, vis a vis whats happening around me.

No doubt... Shoot I wish I knew a command line or pref line code to set the zoom level. Surely it cant be that hard but sadly I'm no programmer..... :(

I am kind of the opposite of you guys. I like my ships to take up as much of the screen as they frequently do during battle scenes in the shows. It make me feel more like I am playing the Hero Ship.

That aside, I would not mind a greater zoom-out range for the people that would use it.

Yes, on the larger ships, it would be helpful to zoom futher out.

It would also be helpful if I didn't have to repeatedly zoom out whenever I go from ground back to my ship.

Maybe the devs will give us a fixed zoom level line in the pref file or even the HUD one day.....

I'd also like to see collision detection removed completely in sector space. Space is vast devs. There's absolutely no reason why I should be bumping into that guy's Scimitar (and yes it's almost always a Scimitar, they're so freaking immense!) when I'm trying to pull away from Sol.

You can change your field of view which affects the apparent scale.

I believe the default FOV for space is 55, I run mine at 35 on the smaller ships and 40 for the larger ones.

Changing FOV is easy enough, just type /setregionfov space ## or /setregionfov ground ##

Just replace ## with a number, play around a little, it can make a big difference in how you see the game and can be helpful in combat as well if you increase the number it gives a kind of fish-eye affect.

It helps a tad but I'm not fond of the squishing of everything into a tighter camera "v" visually. I can see how some people will enjoy it nonetheless. :)

The suggestion to reduce the size of ships has been made several times and Cryptic refuses to listen. Instead they introduce a ships like the Scimitar which are literally gigantic walls in Sector Space.

Now you introduce an expansion which is likely to see lots of players flooding into a rather small sector block with bulky ships.

Removal of collision in sector space is MANDATORY.
Reduction in the size of ships in sector space would be extremely beneficial. Not only does it reduce the collision issues it improves the sense of scale.

I would even go so far as to reduce overall size of ships across the board.

The command to bring the camera back further:

    /camdist X

(where X is any number including decimals)

The normal 'max' I think is in the 80 range or so. And STO (along with CO) will accept numbers of into infinity (the camera will keep just pulling back, although I don't recommend it).

NOTE: CO/STO is a bit buggy with this command as it will constantly keep trying to reset back to the usual maximum. Try binding it to a turn key or spacebar or something that you usually keep hitting constantly.

Yes, if you set the camera distance greater than the maximum, then the game will automatically try to reset it back to the maximum. But the maximum is definitely not 80, at least not in space. The default maximum may be 200, but I haven't checked in a while. I have keybinds set for 35, 85, 150, and 200. The reason I have all these keybinds is to work around this annoying bug, which is many seasons old.

Camera zoom keeps resetting every map change.

I can't resist repeating that the Scimitar in particular is a good 30% larger than it should be. So the devs are entirely at fault with the size of that bird blocking sector (and system) space.

And here I though having to reset the right distance at every beam up was bad. I can't even imagine having to do it at every map change.

In the Chat Window, type the following. Without Quote marks.

    " /setregionfov space ##"

"##" is a numerical value between 20 and 99. 55 is the default game setting. Smaller values bring you in closer to your ship. Larger values move you further out.

Use "/setregionfov space default" to return the view to the game default setting.

Note: These commands work on the ground as well. Just substitute the word ground for the word space and you will be good to go. These commands will adjust the Field Of View permanently.

It's fine that it's big, but space is way bigger. I shouldn't be bumping into you as I'm trying to go to warp. There should be more than enough room for both of us. Easiest way for the devs to deal with it is for the devs to simply turn off collision detection in sector space. I'm not sure what purpose it serves there anyway. Do they not want us to be able to stack ships? Why does it matter?

No it isn't, they got it spot on unlike the JHDC which is only a quarter of it's actual size.

This has been discussed to death:

    Scimitar in Nemesis: http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20071010234610/memoryalpha/en/images/8/8f/Nemesis_comparison.jpg

Scimitar in game posted by Taco here: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7456/9345158350_370bc50b15_o.jpg

Notice the jump from less then 900 meter lenght to over 1100 meters.

If you pay attention in game, you'll notice the assault cruiser couldn't splice the scimitar front as it is done in the movie simply because the scimitar nose is as large as the sovereign saucer (taco's image shows the previous version model, that ad a slimmer hull than the current one).

EDIT: And there are more plausible sizes for the Jem dread, not only the 5 km one. It's typically explained by several classes of ships that somehow have the same appearance. he in-game dread is small, but not that far off from the smaller 1.3-1.5 km long version from the show.
