I just 'retired' my pre-rep polarons because these were so meh. I'm sure someone can make these effective but I don't have the $$$ to invest in fleet consoles. From what I can see the crit chance isn't any better than the white loot drops.
The bio-molecular disruptors aren't bad, yes you lose a single mod, but with the ability to increase the incubation to 7+%, the extra radiation damage can be useful!
You still get the 2.5% disruptor breech chance to go with it, so a single loss of one mod isn't really going to kill you too much imo.
The protonic polarons, well they require to me imo, way too much investment for a purposeful use. I mean not only do you need a high amount of Flow Capacitors, but also need rely on a high CRTH chance, and Rep consoles to boost that proton damage, which will vastly effect the polaron damage. So imo, not a great choice!
I think protonic polarons are pretty much exclusively made for Dyson ships that want to stack +Proton damage for their dual cannons and experimental proton weapon anyway.
Bio-Molecular seem a bit better. Snares are always nice, and it helps that Disruptor is a great energy type to begin with. Expect to see more Undine opponents in DR, and more ways to boost Radiation damage.

Yes. The proton damage abilities (like protonic barrage and the c-store proton beam weapon) is buffed with the rep tac consoles. At which point you might as well use the weapons. Otherwise its a bad pick.
Bio-Molecular weapons are good with the set that buffs the proc chance (and that includes the bio torps). Protonic polarons are junk, but at least they are free mk xii junk.
Thissler, you may need to check your math. I would highly recommend you parse it. I have a fed using an Avenger with all polarons (well, 7+KCB). This is a BA FAW build, sort of drake style.
I swapped out one of my BAs with a Protonic Polaron BA. I put it up front for best firing position.
I just ran a solo Starbase 24 and checked the log parse of it.
Total damage: 5,278,169
I ONLY used EPTW+EPS+redmatter+APB1
Protonic particle burn was 10,177 total. That's 0.193% of the entire damage from all weapons combined. This is with 20% crit rate, as well. In the entire sortie I fired 4239 shots and it triggered 34 times.
Meanwhile, in the same time, I had 860 crit hits.
The Protonic Polaron array all by itself fired 603 times and did 800,797 total damage. Its damage per hit was avc 1,328, and its max one-hit was 3900. It had 112 crit hits (19%, close to my overall 20% crtH)
So overall it's a really low damage output that triggers only 5% of the time.
It's a chance on a chance with a low damage output. Just taking the Protonic Polaron by itself, the damage bonus when all is said and done was less than 2% (1.2%, to round it off), which is within statistical anomaly range. In short: It's so inconsequential you almost can't quantify it.
I think your math or the game's math is wrong. Whatever, the end result is that it is one of THE worst procs I've ever parsed.

not saying either one is right or wrong but remember they change the proc on protonic polarons a little bit ago. Before it was a chance per cycle but now it's a chance per hit. (if the hit is a crit)
Just look at the weapon damage buff from the dyson rep tactical consoles for polaron/proton vs fleet tac consoles for straight polaron. The rep consoles nerf your polaron weapon damage, obvious, and the proc does not come anywhere close to making up for it. The only legitimate reason to use the rep tac consoles is because you want to buff ALL proton damage (including non-weapon sources, eg protonic barrage). If you actually want weapon damage and dont care about other sources of proton damage, then you are going to be smarter if you use an energy type that can be buffed with fleet tac consoles. There's a reason NOBODY except the contrarians uses these things outside of proton-specific builds.

yeah and I don't think those consoles even boost the proton damage from protonic polaron either.
I use the dyson tac consoles on 1 toon only just for the proton damage for the dyson destroyer consoles (will be nice with a 1 min cd ), but other than that I agree with you; they're not really that good. aw
Protonic polarons are idiotic. They're a chance on a chance. Don't use them. Further, the protonic damage sucks.
The Bio weapons? I tried them. I really wasn't impressed at all. the whole DoT issue is annoying. Rather sucks compared to "real" weapons IMO.
Not a fan of the protonic polarons. Any other type of polarons have worked fine for me. They are my core choice for new alts, and I still use them on 2 alts.
The Bio-stuff is not bad. The enhanced bio torpedo is currently the best in the game IMO.
I use the bio-phaser turret on a elite-fleet phaser build. Please no phaser hate - I had the dil and built out two alts with an escort and beam build.
The Escort with a mix of the bio-phaser turret and gear is fun to play. Above average damage, with the added bonus of the shield proc. The Vesta with an all-beam build is also a tough SOB.
What about a pure science ship? One that runs without any tac consoles or energy weapons? Do the Biomolecular *torpedoes* make sense on such a build?
FWIW, I'm running my R'Mor (Temp Sci) right now with 4x purple Bio torps (various flavors - freebies from the rep grind), along with the Breen cluster transphasic and a tractor mine launcher.
Is the Bio proc worthwhile on such a build? Especially since I'm not slotting any torp-boosting tac consoles?
Or would I just be better off with a bunch of fleet Quantums? Or maybe that insanely expensive "emission" torpedo?
yeah and I don't think those consoles even boost the proton damage from protonic polaron either.
Yes, they do - the Auto Targeting Module consoles and the Proton Particle Stabilizer console definitely boost the proton damage of protonic polaron weapons.

Just curious... How do I start a solo session for Starbase 24? I would like to use that to test various beam types including the protonic polaron beam weapons I received for free while leveling up the Dyson rep a while ago and using the Jem'hadar space set.
The visuals of polaron beams look nice, but I want to see how it compares against phasers since that is the canon beam weapon type for Starfleet.
Create your own private queue, give it a password, set level to 50, and hit "start" with just you by yourself in the roster list.
It's one of the few that allows it, if I recall.
I'm not saying it's best. It's just the first thing I thought of when trying to find some kind of solo queue. A foundry mission may be good also, where you shoot ships to pick up the item drops?
The Radiation damage is fine and I've had that proc for over 2k damage. Another nice thing is that for a number out there, you can still use your trusty Disruptor or Phaser damage boosts, so a switch over may not mean breaking the bank of resources. The Radiation dmg can be increased via the reward TAC Console (and the new Torp in DR does have Radiation damage effect, BTW).
Among Disruptor-based weapons, the BM version is alright. Either choice you make among Disruptors is a good one.
For Phaser-based weapons, I'd take the BM Phasers anyday, unless I have a Standard Phaser with highly favorable mods. Even then, that standard Phaser with good mods is not as a clear cut win to me.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot over the weekend.
I prefer to solo in Starbase 24 since it involves some maneuvering around and the odds are definitely stacked against you with all those ships just flying around.
I don't wanna do a farming mission because you just sit there and shoot one ship at a time. Starbase 24 at least represents actual combat conditions.
Except for a straight-up parse test, you don't need or want combat. You just want to test raw numbers.
I suppose, but that eliminates most of the variables in combat.
The 1st model of the M-16 perform superb under ideal test conditions. So superb that cleaning kits were not even issued to soldiers in the theater of war. However, under real combat conditions in Vietnam it was prone to a lot of jamming because of dirt and mud in the chamber and barrel.
The poor performance of the M-16 was originally chalked up as being the fault of inexperienced or careless soldier who do not know how to operate or maintain their weapons... kinda difficult when no cleaning kits were issued.
None of which applies to STO. In here you're better off with an analogy about a group of mathematicians standing in a room determining solutions to equations on a blackboard.
Because that's what we're doing with stats tracking and theorycrafting. We're running the math, and once we have the math we use it to justify using or denouncing a certain weapon/proc.
The combat you suggest merely muddles the math. Once you have the math, you get the idea. Once you get the idea, you make the build. Once you have the build, you take it into combat. Let's not put the cart before the horse.
The funny thing is, the Devs HAD to see that the proc for Protonic Polarons was already too low, and also that the lack of ways to buff ANY Protonic weapon or Proc are so limited few, if any people would want to trade a mod like [CrtD] for the chance of a proc on Crit.
In general, I am leery about trading a mod for a proc. Even more so for the chance of one on one.
Comments
I know that, for certain...but as for the two weapon types mentioned, are they worth it?
The Bio weapons? I tried them. I really wasn't impressed at all. the whole DoT issue is annoying. Rather sucks compared to "real" weapons IMO.
I'm leaning toward junk.

Now shaddup about the queues, it's a BUG

We've been through this one before, at least on the polarons.
Without actually parsing it....
The math on it is pretty solid. The proc is good. Remember that even a hit is essentially a proc.
If a normal proc is 2.5% you're going to see it 2 to 3 times per 100 actual hits.
If your crit rate is 15% you'll see the proton proc 3 to 4 times per 100 actual hits.
And that's for plinkers. Guys that are boosting the crit rate during burst and using CRF could be seeing much higher rates.
And there's not a lot of resistances running around for that straight up hull damage.
Anyways that's without parsing.
I use em with my dyson so what do i know. oh and my steamrunner.
