I was just going thru my BOFF's and all their skills last night (setting up for a second configuration), when I accidentally clicked on the "Promote" button.
Now, all of my BOFF's have been Commander rank for ages, so this was a surprise to me.
The promotion option* was to promote to "Captain". Can't remember the skill points required and such, but I do remember that I (my character) had to have the rank of "Admiral". Not "Vice Admiral", but "Admiral".
Today though I cannot get this to happen. (Found again, see below)
Does anyone have any info about this? Did anyone else even see this?
*: This option is still there, in the Status Window "Career Options" menu. May have to be planet side to have this happen... Maybe this is part of the pre-DR patching?
Now please let us play as them and allow us to forget this admiral business ever happened!
In ten days we'll all be able to reach the point where we're one step down from president.. Sooo do not want to be stuck down that career path..
President is an elected position and not a military position so we would have to attempt a coup to get that position. If I was in charge of STO, then level 60 would be Admiral and level 70 would be Fleet Admiral or level 60 would be the final level.

Well you'll be a 5 star Flag officer, but your still a way's down from President, you have the Sector commanders, divsion heads and the Commander in Chief ( not always the president) to go before your at the top

The promote to captain thing has been a part of the UI...since launch I think. You could never actually promote them to captain. No doubt it's just a placeholder for a future update to the system, or simply forgotten by Cryptic...for four years... :P

Fleet Admiral is not one step down from President.
If we base Star Fleet on the US Navy our admirals are part of the operating forces. Operating forces report to the CNO or in Starfleet purposes Chief of Starfleet Operations.
The CNO reports to the Secretary of the Navy...not sure of the Starfleet/Federation version of it.
Secretary of the Navy reports to the Secretary of Defense and SECDEF reports to the President.
Fleet Admiral Quinn is the highest NPC Admiral we get missions from and he's the Commanding officer of ESD. We've got a while to go before we're second to the President.
Your pain runs deep.
Let us explore it... together. Each man hides a secret pain. It must be exposed and reckoned with. It must be dragged from the darkness and forced into the light. Share your pain. Share your pain with me... and gain strength from the sharing.

Speaking of which I wonder if Cryptic will ever introduce us to the Commanding officers at the far side of the Goldengate Bridge
I mean we know from TNG its not unusual for Captains to be on Familiar or even personal terms with Starfleet Command
As it stands now the player characters are sort of in the dark about the Workings of the Federations upper Command structure, and we see none of the politics, I mean somebody could replace Okeg with an imposter and we'd never know ( Incidentally go play the Purity Foundry series for more on that topic)
By comparison, KDF player characters are on familiar terms with the Chancellor, having met with him personally, and both Factions have personally met D'Tan and Obisek.
Does it not seem odd that our only knowledge of the Federation is partial knowledge of its ParaMilitary Command structure, when we have a lot of contact in game with the Military and political leaders of the other major factions.
Infact going further, D'Tan, the chancellor and Quinn were pictured meeting in one of the Promos for DR, Quinn and J'mpok meet to agree to peace, But where was the Federation President? I'm beginning to suspect he's been locked in lower deck store cupboard on ESD by Quinn
