I'm sure everyone is enjoying the current Gear Upgrade Event. I had an idea the other day, for an addition/change to the event for after Delta Rising launches. Since NPCs: Lieutenant Shelby, Commander Hugor, and Lieutenant Tirar are already on their respective faction maps, I purpose a re-purposing of them for once the event ends, and Delta Rising is live. I would purpose a new, repeatable, mission available via respective NPC(s) that allows for a captain to claim a free Superior Tech Upgrade.
Now, before anyone goes and says "that would be unfair and break the game", I completely agree it would. However, hear out the rest of my idea first.
Instead of just "giving" captains a free Superior Tech Upgrade whenever they wanted, heavy restrictions would need to be imposed on the mission to ensure fairness and non-exploitablity. The NPCs could offer a repeatable mission to the players, after they reach level 10, only available once every 48 hours, similar to the lifetime/subscription extra dilithium refinement DOff assignment. The mission would act similar to the current event, speaking with the NPC to claim a SINGLE and CHARACTER BOUND Superior Tech Upgrade of the captain's choice.
These restrictions mentioned above would prevent any kind of exploiting and ensure fairness. For example, let's just say I wanted to upgrade my Omega Force Tachyon Deflector Array Mk XII to Mk XIII. Doing such would cost 106,240 tech points. If I wanted to use these NPCs and upgrade my deflector/item for "free", since Superior Tech Upgrades give 12,800 tech points, I would need to return to the NPC a total of 9 times to complete the upgrade, AKA, a total 18 days.
As you can see, this idea would not be unfair or an exploit/game breaker in any way. I feel this addition would be a pleasant token gesture that would greatly encourage and help players upgrade their gear. I know none of the Devs will probably see/respond to this thread, though if they did, I would like to know somthing like this may be viable in the future or not. Thanks.

This would circumvent the reason for having craft-able upgrade mechanics in the first place.
I did think of that, that's why I suggested the mission only be repeatable every 48 hours. Upgrading an entire ship/character by just one mark would take multiple months using this method alone, thus leaving the alternative of crafting/purchasing Superior Tech Upgrades still the highly favorable option. This idea was meant more as a token gesture kind of mission, rather than a replacement.

I could envision this 'mission' as once per character thing beyond the event itself, but not infinitely repeatable.
Secondly, rather than a free upgrade every two days, have a lore quiz ala the academy.
Prize would be a single random upgrade kit, random quality too, instead of a bit of dil.
