Talk me out of this...

Considering: buying a Guramba for my KDF captains while on sale.

Goal: something to look cool, be different, fight a different style, yet still be effective and fun.

My KDFs all have access to the vet ship (life sub), one of the Breens, both Risian, and some have a Dyson sci destroyer as well. I don't actually NEED any new ships so just wondering if people have been really enjoying their Guramba's and not finding them impossible to keep alive.

Several of my captains (Fed and KDF) fly destroyers of one type or another, so far they work OK for me.

The 20% discount helps offset the eventual price of upgrading to T5-U.

So my question is twofold:

Is the Guramba a worthy addition to a KDF captains stable (for fun and coolness, I don't minmax my DPS or builds... yet), and

Is it a waste of zen to buy an old-school ship, even at 20% off, when DR ships come out in 2 weeks (much more expensive, I'm sure, and hey, could ANY of them be as cool as a Guramba?) (I mean really?)

Thanks, appreciate any help or insight offered.

I can't talk you out of this personally, cause I think the Guramba is awesome! :D

It's a really unique looking and fun ship to fly, plus the Javelin is fantastic. And the upgraded Guramba gets an aditional tac.console bringing it to 5. I don't know what to think about T6 ships compared to T5-U yet, but if you're not concerned with having the latest toy or extreme min-maxing - the Guramba is an incredubly fun ship to fly. And no, I don't think it's a waste of Zen if you happen to like a ship. My friends and I myslef have picked up several ships we've been eyeing for a while. My policy is - if I like the ship, I'll find a way to make it work. And the Guramba is very far from being a bad ship.

The Guramba is a MUST if you play a klingon for a while. Its a mix between a BoP and a Raptor. But without cloaking.

I really enjoy my Guramba since the first day i adquired it (1,5 years ago) but i ve been really disapointed lately and i dont use it too much because when i bought it i had a different point of view of cryptic, and i was hoping that the Fleet Guramba will come sooner rather than later. But time passed and i realzied that we will never see a Fleet Guramba, so i really stop playing with it for a while.

Now we have tier 6 ships and upgrades, but i dunno, due to this i lost almost my will to keep playing with the Guramba. I dunno why cryptic hates this ship so much, seriously.

But this is my case. The Guramba is an amazing escort, and it owns EVERYTHING xD. At least that was my case using a disruptor cannon build. I loved it and i love it, but i dont play too much with it right now. Well, i dont play too much with it or with any other ships, unfortunately.

Have to agree with that: Purchased it earlier today and i think it's an awesome ship.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

There do not appear to be any plants to offer a Fleet Guramba at this point, eh? It's one of three Zen boats without a Fleet variant (Guramba, Marauder, and D'Kyr). So you'd be looking at a T5 9 console to T5-U 10 console upgrade...and that would be that - compared to the T5 9 console to T5 10 console to T5-U 11 console upgrade path that exists for the majority of the Zen boats (there are some Zen boats that are already Fleet-level with 10 consoles and will just do the T5-U upgrade to FT5-U with 11 consoles).

So it really can't be compared to buying another Zen boat that has that Fleet variant upgrade available or is already at Fleet level. Something else to consider while comparing it to other Zen boats (without applying the discount), is that you're paying 500 more Zen for 9 consoles and the Javelin: 2500 Zen. The normal 9 console boats are 2000 Zen and 2500 Zen normally gets you 10 consoles, outside of ships like the Guramba where you're paying that 500 Zen for the Javelin instead of the +1 console, +10% hull, +10% shield.

Compare that to the Dyson Destroyers where for that 2500 Zen you're getting the gimmickry and the 10th console, etc, etc, etc.

If Delta Rising wasn't coming, then it would be pretty easy to say to Hell with that...cause it's a freakin' awesome boat. Facehugger mode...muahahahaha.

It's one thing to go back and forth on comparing the various FT5-U ships to the potential FT6 ships, it's another comparing a FT6 ship to a T5-U ship.

Maybe if they offered the Fleet variant (cause then it would fall back into the it's freakin' awesome!)...but as it stands, meh - it would be an extremely cautionary purchase.

Sorry, can't talk you out of it.

I am buying the Vandal and if I can grind most the dilithium for the B'rel Retrofit @ 1,600 Zen over the weekend, then I will buy that ship as well.

It's a great, unique ship with a cool Death Star lazer... that's going to be obsolete and I seriously doubt Cryptic is going to ever go back to T5 to improve them.

It's a dead end purchase. Better to just save your money and wait for a T6 that catches your fancy.
    Leave nerfing to the professionals.

Mat'Ha wants to know why you're cheating on it?

Seriously, for a ship that has no fleet version and you know is gonna be second-rate in like 10 days, its a dead-end investment. Plus you'll probably replace it next sale anyways. Save $20, tide yourself over with maybe a Mirror ship off the Exchange if you want something new to tinker with, then get what you really want when the next opportunity presents itself. Never 'settle for' something.

For every Zen you waste on a ship that is not a T6 ship one kitten will die...

    Cool, can I watch?
Seriously though, if you have money to burn, go for it, but so close to release this sale is a crock. Save your money, wait until release and see what comes next, there will always be other sales.

I still use the Guramba. Full pop fleet elite DHC pure disruptor build. In facehugger mode it rocks big-time! I do CEE every day in it and always place. I've been using it since released despite purchasing most all the ships in game. It is a badass ship. The name of mine is called the Gorgon.

I was so hoping for a T6 version to be released in the future. I really dont know what other ship my KDF main will use if forced to give it up.

Hmmm some of you guys are pretty convincing... I am certainly close to holding off on it, DESPITE those crazy people who say it is an awesome ship. I know they are just messing with me.

I will likely start a 2nd thread on this next question then:

Assuming current ships will soon be obsoleted, are ANY of the current ships on sale worth buying just to unlock the console, skin etc?

(I'm lookin' at you, Vandal Destroyer and your Leechy console)

Thanks for the replies so far!

I wasn't messing with you and I really consider the Guramba a great ship, especially going by the reasons you stated yourself - having fun messing around with a ship and not being top-notch and min-maxing.
Obsoleted is a very strong word, if we compare it:

    - T6 ships have 13 Boff slots and 10 cosole slots
    - 10 console T5-U ships have 12 Boff slots and 11 console slots
    - 9 console T5-U ships have 12 Boff slots and 10 console slots
    - special 9 console T5-u ships like the Guramba have 12 Boff slots, 10 console slots + built in ability
    - Fleet T6 ships will probably have 13 Boff slots and 11 console slots

That puts the upgraded Guramba in a very similar situation it was until now, once Fleet T6 comes. Without a fleet version, the current standard Guramba already had a console and 10% hull and shield mod. less and it's not obsoleted, I'm still using it to great success. Just like people use the mirror ships or other ships that don't have a fleet version yet.
Once Fleet T6 hits, ships without a fleet version (if they dont get one in the meanwhile) will have a console less and Boff less than Fleet T6, but it will still have a built in Javelin. Fleet and bundle T5-U ships will only have a Boff station less. This doesn't make them obsolete. Does it make them less? Yeah it sure does. But if you play for fun and not at top-notch PvP level, the difference is not going to be such a big deal. It's more about the knowledge and less about the ship, that's why we have 30k DPS Scimitars and 3k DPS Scimitars, while being the same ship.

As to the second part of your question, off the top of my head:

    - Vandal Destroyer for the plasmonic leech
    - Phalanx Science Vessel for the acteons
    - Valdore Warbird for it's infamous healing console
    - T3 Nebula for the TDF, if you like doing PvP

Well, like I stated in my 1st post on page 1, I am getting the Vandal Destroyer for the Plasmonic Leech. My Tac and Eng toons don't need it, but it is definitely nice to have at a discount.

The only other worthwhile console is from the T3 Valdore Warbird. Forgot the name of it but there is a 2.5% chance that when firing energy weapons at enemies doing so will regenerate your shields by 2x the damage you inflict if shields are down to 90% or below. The console can only be installed in warbirds though.

As for the Grumba, if you think you are going to fun flying it then just go for it. That's the reason why I am grinding for the B'rel Retrofit. I estimate I will need roughly 192k dill to cover 75% the cost of the Brel. I already got 55k from grinding last night so only another 137k between tonight and Sunday night for the rest. That's about 46k per day so totally doable.

It's a nice ship but I don't know if it's worth it, since not only are T6 ships coming out soon it also doesn't have a fleet version.

Your ship will be lower-tier in ten days.

How's that for a reason now to buy any ships right now?
