Beams and torpedoes look fantastic but I can usually barely make out the cannon fire. The effects are so dull. Washed out looking. Sometimes I even have a hard time telling if my cannons are firing or not, amongst all the beams I have firing along with them.
I really wish the cannon fire in the game was enhanced. Made brighter, more vibrant. I'd love to see the glow from the bursts the way I do beam arrays. The bursts themselves could be a little larger than they are for one thing, but I feel they need to glow much brighter as well. Larger and much brighter. More vivid. That's what I'd love to see.
I enjoy the game though. I don't like to complain. It's just a suggestion.
Plasma dual heavy cannons, particularly the Romulan plasma DHCs are almost invisible.
The only reason I know I'm firing is from sound, which if there's a lot of people on the map in close proximity to me, doesn't work either.

I'm playing Romulan too at the moment, and I can't really see the cannon fire a lot of the time. I have to try and rely on the sound as well, which sometimes get's a little drowned out.
I can deal with it, but for me it's more aesthetic. How cool would it be to see bright and vivid effects come out of cannons? It would really be eye pleasing. Not to mention, as you said, it would be nice to be able to tell they're firing just from looking.
Plasma cannons are terrible made. The sound is horrible and as you people said, for some reason they are harder to see than the others.
Disruptor cannons, for example are great. The sound is awesome, and they really look more like a cannon fire than almost any other out there. And they fire smoothly, the opposite as plasma cannons.
Antiproton cannons are also not bad, they look fine, and overall it is a pleasant experience.
Tetryon cannons are not too good asthetically, but i love the sound of em.
Phaser cannons, in my opinion are pff. They look just ok, but the sound is terrible. Its like firing some fireworks. I didnt try the quad cannons , but i wish the sound was the one we could hear in the movies (specially the intro scene of "First Contact" and some pisodes of DS9), but again i dont think they are the same weapons, the ones in the movies/show were pulse phasers, not phaser cannons...
Polaron cannons are more or less ok. Not specially good looking like the beams (polaron beams are amazing) and the sound is well, just ok. It could be better.
I tend to just get used to the build i have, and if i need to use plasma cannons, well, i need to get used to em lol. There is no other option. Asthetical changes like these are not going to happen, so we better play with what we have.

Also torpedoes. They usually traveled very quickly to their targets in the shows, unless they were specially modified.
