normal/advanced arent really much of a challenge but they are more entertaining than current stfs in terms of content.
elite is basically difficulty buffed via mob hp, stringent time constraints and if anyone dies its over. same ai.
60 doesnt take much time at all on tribble, its just having 5 people on tribble at 60 to do it enough to beat it at the moment. Also appropriate to its name, borg disconnected likes to randomly disconnect people at certain moments during the mission, sometimes one, sometimes three. think of it as an added challenge.
That's relatively depressing, because that gives all the answers one would need.
Not to rain on your parade, but LoL actively balances pvp because they have major major contests and battles that pay out real cash. If they didn't they'd lose a lot more than just money.
I think you're wrong. LoL contests started just because their PvP was balanced to begin with, being a full PvP game after all. Further balancing to make the contests better is just evolutive maintenance/improvement of the game.
If STO had balanced PVP from the start and the playerbase was more PVP-oriented, STO could very likely have such contests. As with any game with balanced PVP and competitive mechanics.
IMO, it's a missed opportunity for STO. I think any game has the potential to be a PvP pot of gold for its company, regardless of theme. If Trekkers are not PVPers at heart, the game can still be appealing to non-Trekkers (like me) who just want to play a space combat game and maybe PVP in it.

Come on, don't act surprised. We all knew this was coming since the moment they released the blog where they described the HP buff for elite difficulty. The biggest change in the new STF is that I have to spam spacebar *and* the F key, for the rest its just park in one spot and FAW away, or circle one spot and CSV away. I'm really strugling to see who they are aiming at with the new so called elite PvE content, because adding npc HP will only make things harder for those who strugle with the current elite STF's. One thing they did get right though, was stopping people from using all out glass canon DPS builds. Not because it isn't better to have more DPS, because that one universal truth in this game's PvE still holds strong, but because your team will fail if your supper bosted FAW scamitar or tricked out DHC contortrix or whatever dies. I believe that this game needs a PvP experience. I say that as someone who plays as little PvP as I can manage.

They would have to redo most of the gameplay to make combat compelling like that. EZ-mode is integral to the gameplay here--no aiming, no strafing, no rolls or vertical loops--this will never be a compelling combat game. SC and ED are on the horizon and will satisfy that itch, and there are still Freelancer mod servers running now if you dont want to wait. STO is a dress-up game for Star Trek fans, with Geko living the dream of producing new episodes, thats all it will ever be.
They could add a lot to it with some territory control maps, but that is really a different level.

I can guarantee a pvp season, where all equipment is balanced and such would not double the player base and there isn't going to be a mass exodus that you think will be when the next expansion pack comes out.
On the contrary there will probably be a massive influx, especially on launch.
yes new people. They will kill the same npcs 10000 times then they will go away and never return.
Most people would play pvp ...thats why PvP games like Planet side 2 and other online games that allow people to kill eachother have success and sto is a game for "casual" people aka "new people all the time cuz we can't keep them in game"
this design will fail the day it runs out of new people.

Exactly.
This new level cap will bring short term challenge in game, but they seriously need to rethink their strategy(or lack of) for PvP.
Unlike PvE or single player content, for PvP you don't need to spit out new missions in regular intervals.
PvP requires very little and brings much more in return.
IF IT'S GOOD.
Good means rewards, leader boards(and balancing based on it), CUSTOM GAMES (with custom rules).
It DOES NOT require elaborate graphics designs, voice acting or written scenarios.
It's just fun, if it's made to be fun.
In fact, in most games PvP has separate mechanics then Co-op content so it doesn't depend on small fixes for co-op or general play.

"Many players have been asking for a challenge level beyond what we have given them in the past. The new Elite mode is a response to that. This is not a mode we expect all players to be able to eventually complete. This is a mode that will result in many failed attempts before a successful strategy is struck upon, and even then, that strategy should take practice and precision to pull off on a continual basis."
You know, at least that part is somewhat true. The strategy to success is our old friend. DPS. Which in turn leads to not pugging, which in turns will mean that not all players will be able to complete it. If a pug can cost me my reward, why bother taking them along after all. Carrying someone is one thing, one TRIBBLE up of a random pug costing me rewards, is another. Perhaps my views of what is a basic level of PvE competence have grown distorted over the years, so perhaps some people perceive the challenge provided differently then I do. All I see so far is a difficulty that will be a breeze for any team consisting of 10k DPS players, which is about the DPS you can easily get with a freshly levelled toon with no reps, doffs and mark 10 gear. Actually it should still be a breeze with a say 7,5k average team, which would make it easy enough for PESTF teams. But then again, why should I take a gamble on playing with unknown factors. It is a public channel after all. And seeing how it is not my job to put the challenge into the content and with the rewards from the entire team basicly depending on the weakest link, well...
Heh, perhaps they should have called it Elitist mode instead of Elite, because that is what it will accomplish. At the moment only those who parse and still care about their absurd numbers still bother being a **** about telling people doing 3k how much they suck. With the new Elitist mode, anyone will be quickly able to determine the weakest link (on the surface anyway), the one who died. I wonder how long it will take for all the people in the public PVE channels to have all others on ignore lol. The future of PvP lies with the public PvE channels, get your popcorn ready.

Nice try, Bluegeek. but far, far too late in THIS thread. We want ASKRAY - he's been just waaaaay too charming, helpful and downright fun to let him off so easily.....
So I made this post and figured it would get erased or forgotten fairly quickly. I would be driving or about to go to sleep and be constructing arguments for a debate I was sure wasn't happening but thank you. THANK YOU ALL for rising up and voicing all my my secret concerns. Askray, I say this in all seriousness and not to troll but every in interaction I have seen between you and members of the community you supposedly represent has been nothing but demeaning and disrespectful. Frankly you lived up to your reputation. Having managed half a dozen steam forums for games I can say I would never talk to paying customers the way you do let alone let you continue to be my representative for my company. I want to help you. I want sto to be more popular than ever. I am telling you how to do that. Prove me wrong. Post the currant number of active users and then a month after the expansion post new active numbers. If casual players really love your pve so much the number will be higher. I doubt very much this will be the case.
pheo thanks for saying what I wish I was eloquent enough to say. You took the words right out of my mouth while I was catching up on this thread. I really didn't expect it to generate such discussion.
but....um....guys....back to my idea. Does anyone actually like it? Haha I mean this was the whole point....I wanted to see of Yall liked my idea :P a heart of the mists style pvp arena would fix the balancing problems and people could still be pve heroes with broken clickies

But he's a volunteer mod. He doesn't actually work with the devs. He'll never have access to that info. Oh well - I'll just say that to me, he's typically OK. He just went off the bend on this thread for some reason.
On your idea, do you mean Heart of the Mists or Heart of the Storm?

You should check out the VPVP stuff. It's small right now but I think it has potential. Wouldn't mind seeing some of the old AFO guys :P in it.
Yeah this VPvP has some potential behind it. I've given it a try, when I can actually be bothered to log in to STO these days. Oh, and then today I do decide to log in and do some of forced crafting/upgrading...server problems, can't log in. GG Cryptic.

Yup. Sadly STO seems less and less worthy of my time every day.

Nothing is impossible to him who would try.... except getting cryptic to care about pvp.
Yet another overly-entitled 'industry insider' posting how to save the F2P model shouting 'watch this video'. It's a great vid, but I don't see it necessarily applying here. Unless you feel you're not getting enough free stuff to warrant playing.
- I'm still here. I started as a whale. Stupidly dumping cash.
- I took a year off (16 months) from spending $$$ on STO. NO REGRETS.
- I am spending money again, as content is improving. 'Cause I like what I see.
But I don't have to. Tribble has shown XII is fine, the new powers are NOT required to have a great experience. In my case, it's time for some new ships.
Relax. The game is profitable, and they're making new content on a regular basis.
Relax. The game is profitable, and they're making new content on a regular basis.
That's the thing though--they are profitable so the squeeze is unnecessary and pure greed and completely transparent to everybody.
Maybe you got piles of unneeded cash laying around that you can throw at half-TRIBBLE games just because, not many others do and right now Cryptic is pricing the others out for greed.
Relax. The game is profitable, and they're making new content on a regular basis.
I'm just curious, what is your definition of regular basis? I don't mean that as a snide remark, it's just that the last time they released new content was the beginning of the year. They seem to be going for big influxes instead of a steady stream.

Yeesh. Nope - 2 mortgages, an ex wife and 2 kids destined to be University bound. No 'extra cash', but willing to forgo a few dinners out to supplement a game I play almost daily. I may even be willing to skip the morning Venti Americano.
But YES, I think they might do more business if the Operations pack was $25 instead of $125, as long as they invested in hardware to support it.

I've seen three expansions / new content in 12 months. While I'd love something every month, I realize there's a balance to what I am seeing. LoR (substantial), followed by the Dyson expansion, and the Undine invasion. I think that's been a good year.
It's been a while since I posted on the forum, main reason being "who cares" about what another casual pvper would have to say... Anyways, some personal thoughts:
Pvp has never been a cash cow in this game, so askray is correct with this statement. But where things go wrong... Is that cryptic never invested in pvp to begin with. THAT'S WHY THERE AREN'T MANY PLAYING IT. Every successful product needs a minimum investment, no matter how awesome and cool the idea is. What cryptic invested in Pvp is some sort of ballance attempts that were doomed most of them from start due to addressing the effect and not the cause. Other games can generate massive profits from pvp, why can't cryptic do the same? I think the answer is very simple: starting from the cfo all way to the last bean counter, all want one thing, to make lots of money FAST. Up to when f2p launched, pvp was very nice, balanced and skill oriented (side of some issues like Tac team, etc, that were fixed reasonably fast). Right after f2p, newer f2p gear gave a slight edge to the player, but not something game breaking (side of bugs/unintended behavior of some consoles, etc). As we move on the timeline towards today, more and more imbalance in pvp has been caused by newer "cool" gear, rep system and the infinite grinding. Still, overall nothing too crazy, but annoying and painful for sure. After the new DR, keeping up and being competitive in pvp would be even harder, unless one is willing to dump lots of cash in the game.
Pvp has been neglected in this game not because it doesn't bring revenue, but because there is no vision, talent and absolutely zero planning. Other games can cash out from pvp, I bet Sto can do it also, provided the proper strategy and resources are allocated. Snyx (if memory serves me right) was the only dev that actually understood pvp and could change things, after he left, nobody really understood and was also willing/capable (or allowed for that matter) how to ballance pvp. What cryptic does now for pvp is investing the absolute minimum to keep the few pvpers (read cash cows) in the game with all their monetary resources available. Instead, investing a bit in new pvp maps, game play, features, etc would definitely enlarge the pvp player base and the amount of revenue. What started to kill the pvp was the insane amount of pve grinding. Now, on the top of this is the insane amount of cash that will be necessary to stay competitive. I doubt that a pvper that wants to stay competitive will wait couple months to grind like nuts and just spend little cash.
Yes, vanilla pvp is an alternative, but this won't work with the new player base, this is a solution for the few ones currently in the game that didn't get to the point of saying eff this bs...
Pvp will become a very "5th Avenue shopping experience", where who spends a lot gets the cool stuff and shows off... Instead it should be like Walmart, sell huge amounts at lower prices... Yes, cryptic is not charity, but the current business model is prone to fail at some point. It's pure greed from a pvper point of view.
Pve wise, all this fancy gear is not that important, and other than some very few pve players that will get the new ships and gold gear right away, most will probably wait patiently while spending moderate amounts of cash. Sto ain't a game for rich people, and if the thought of capitalize on this idea is present in anybody's mind, it's a very wrong approach that's prone to fail in the near future. Cryptic, you're not apple, you don't have a product that compares to iPhone (quality, service, support), plus, an iPhone is a device you can have with you all the time, you bought it once and can use it as long as you want, it won't be another one launched in few months, which, compared to Sto pvp... Well, you need to keep spending iPhones worth of money just to stay competitive in pvp... This is not the way to go, other than the moral aspect, it's not a model that would last. Do you really think cryptic that a new player will come to Pvp and spend good thousands just to keep up with his opponents, when he can go play another game, like eso or any other for that reason?
Expand pvp by adding few pvp maps, scenarios and capitalize on more people playing pvp. Have skill levels added after a while when there is a real Pvp player base and match similar skilled players. Leave a queue for experienced teams to slaughter each other and create more warzones, area control, come up with a cool and nice idea. Don't let a season pass without a change to pvp, even if that's just adding a new map or some new npcs. Try making a system where gear gives a slight advantage, not where is the iwin button (I speculate now, but how is a t5 ship going to stand against a t6?). And most importantly, target the new features towards the player base, especially for pvp. Give pveers what they want, including costumes, scarfs, etc, but don't forget pvpers, they spend by far the most amounts in this game, and there is way more money to be made by attracting more to Pvp and cash less from each.

quick question, do people actually buy ships with real money with no intention of ever fighting anything other then pathetic npc's? I just don't get it

but....um....guys....back to my idea. Does anyone actually like it? Haha I mean this was the whole point....I wanted to see of Yall liked my idea :P a heart of the mists style pvp arena would fix the balancing problems and people could still be pve heroes with broken clickies
*Scratches head*
But he's a volunteer mod. He doesn't actually work with the devs. He'll never have access to that info. Oh well - I'll just say that to me, he's typically OK. He just went off the bend on this thread for some reason.
On your idea, do you mean Heart of the Mists or Heart of the Storm?
Things quiet for the moment in Stovokor, so thought I might yet cheerily add to this thread.
BUT wait one minute, the thread's chief protagonist seems to have gone strangely silent... curious thing.
Yoohoo, ASKRAY, where are you? Marco polo.... *smirkety smirk smirk*
Kill Feddie.

You should check out the VPVP stuff. It's small right now but I think it has potential. Wouldn't mind seeing some of the old AFO guys :P in it.
Hope you are well. Take care!

Maybe you got piles of unneeded cash laying around that you can throw at half-TRIBBLE games just because, not many others do and right now Cryptic is pricing the others out for greed.

Hear! Daughters too.
The blood of battle washes clean.
The Warrior brave and true.
We fight, we love, and then we kill...
quick question, do people actually buy ships with real money with no intention of ever fighting anything other then pathetic npc's? I just don't get it
